L 35 casting numbers

I've searched this forum for the thread regarding which L 35 heads are the best performing. I want my Ty to be faster. I like the performance of the vortech's but the price is a bit much. I can have a set of L35's rebuilt and ported for about 200 bucks. I've a freind who's dad owns a machine shop. His dad said he would put 2.02/1.6 valves in the heads, cut them down to fit, hog the bowls out and port match the intake for 200 bucks, I've to get the right heads. I have read the 94-95 castings with the 30deg angel vs the 5deg angle is much better for flow. I've no idea of what heads to loook for bu tI know that I want to get the best castings. I have heard the L 35's if ported correclty, can produce some good flow numbers and power. Cost comparable, I think the L 35's may be a better choice??

So which casting numbers should I be looking for?

Thanks for the help!

If it seems to good to be true, more than likely it is. New valves cost me ~$20 per head, so $240 for the heads. Maybe he has a used set, that he is going to give you for next to nothing. Porting a set of L35 to out flow Vortec's should take atleast 8-10 hours for an Iron head maybe even more time. Not mention the cost of a valve job and machining the surfaces. This guy is going to be working for close to minimum wage if he really doing what he says is doing for you. Hogging out a port usually isn't the best way to port a head if that is truly what he is planning on doing. More likely he will spend a little time porting (with little gain) and do the rest. You will need a different cam and tuning to take advantage of the additional air flow of the heads.

You mention you want your Ty to be faster. What kind of mods do you have in your Typhoon, What kind of ET's/Trap Speed's do you run? or how does it run on Datamaster

Yeah I would go with new springs on those heads also. Thats going to cost money. Depending on the spring pressure you may want to make sure you have threaded in rocker studs instead of press in studs. I have press in but Im only running 100lb springs at rest.

Some L35 have screw in rockers as opposed to pressed in ones, but I think they are all metric threads, so the easiest solution is to have drill and tapped for common 7/16" SBC screw in rockers.

You are right. There is one casting number that has screw in rocker studs.
But like Sy#2661 mentioned you might want to get them re drilled and tapped with a friendlier stud. You could run with the pressed in ones. I think the stock heads are pressed in. At least they looked pressed in when I had mine off. (Please correct me if Im wrong on this)

Re: L 35 casting numbers

I'm just wanting more power out of my Ty. I've a waller 57mm turbo upgrade with alky injection, 3 inch cat back system, code 59 with 3 bar map sensor. All the reliability mods, boost gauge, wide band kit.

The machine shop I"m talking about is my best friends dad's place. He is going to use some left over springs from my 88 Vett. I had purchased some decent comp cam's springs, they've been sitting in the box for some time. He has ported the heads on my vett and he did an amazing job...for free. So I have no doubt that he will port the heads correclty.

I"m just looking for the best casting of the L35's. I just want to get my Ty into the mid 12's on 93 and alky.

thanks

The link Devil's Own posted should tell you the info you are looking for.

Your machinest should be able to also tap the heads for screw in studs without any problem. Have them tapped to the size and pick up a set for a small block Chevy.

You should be in the mid 12's already with what you have. Might want to look at your tune. Not to bash your stuff but if that setup cant run 12's then you might have some underlying issues you might what to fix before heads.

Re: L 35 casting numbers

I've yet to track my Typhoon. I figured that the L35's ported could possibly get me into the high 11's with my set up.

Thank you guys for the casting numbers! I plan to port the exhaust radius and gasket match the intake runners. I've a ton of SBC parts left over from my Vett project. Once I finish the porting work i will do, I will have my friends dad hog the bowls, put the larger valves in and tap the rocker studs.

Thanks again everone!

Re: L 35 casting numbers

626s are generally good heads.

Don't go crazy hogging them out... for what you're doing, you won't need to.
Too much of a hog-out will kill the low end response of the heads.

Your Corvette has Aluminum heads, their is huge difference in the time to port aluminum vs Iron heads. I wouldn't just throw on a set of springs you have laying around. If you aren't changing the cam, then just use the stockers. Stiffer springs take more energy to compress.

Re: L 35 casting numbers

I'm guessing that the reason he would not want to hog the bowls out is because it will affect the velosity of the airflow, especially since our SyTy's are strong in the lower rpm range, correct?

I too have been considering the L35 heads vs vortech as the L35's are considerably cheaper.
