My first slow trips down the quarter

Friday I went to Island Dragway for my first attempt at the track. I parked the truck for the first 20 minutes or so to watch the action and try to avoid being the dumbass in some internet video who didn't know where the starting line was. Once I started I was able to get in only 4 passes (10 to 20 minutes cooldown in between each run) before the skys opened and the rain came down. I'm not happy with my times at all, but it was my first try so I'll let it slide. I really need to buy that extra laptop Smaug keeps saying he has and get DM going. Anyway, the results:

1st run:

R/T ... 1.043
60' ... 2.324
330 ... 6.296
1/8 ... 9.649
MPH ... 73.14
1000 ... 12.539
1/4 ... 14.984
MPH ... 92.08

2nd run:

R/T ... .572
60' ... 2.033
330 ... 5.970
1/8 ... 9.344
MPH ... 72.70
1000 ... 12.258
1/4 ... 14.723
MPH ... 91.25

3rd run:

R/T ... 1.621
60' ... 2.292
330 ... 6.326
1/8 ... 9.734
MPH ... 72.06
1000 ... 12.670
1/4 ... 15.148
MPH ... 90.82

4th run:

R/T ... .773
60' ... 2.387
330 ... 6.432
1/8 ... 9.843
MPH ... 71.96
1000 ... 12.786
1/4 ... 15.265
MPH ... 90.89

During the first 2 runs, I really didn't get to build any boost before the launch since I was still trying to figure out exactly where to stage. On runs 3 and 4, I had it figured out a little better, but both times as I built boost I inched up enough to kill the Pre-Stage light and backed off the throttle just before the tree lit up trying to get back. Also, after the 2nd run, I realized that even with the engine off, hood open, and IC pump running, the truck wasn't going to cool down fast enough, so I bought a bag of ice and stuffed it against the upper IC and the upper intake while it was in the pits.

I think after I get the laptop I'll head back and see what I can make happen. Of course, this means I can't say anything more to Smaug about Derek beating him head-to-head until I get my times down. Is there anything that's obvious to the experienced guys around here that I've missed?

was this in your ty or your regular blazer?

its mostly your lack of launch that killed your times. I bet you have a solid 14.0 lurking there had you pulled a 1.7-1.8 sixty

That would be my Ty. I've never owned a Blazer... unlike a neighbor of mine. All of my other trucks have been/are pickups. I kinda figured it was the launch that killed me... hopefully I get better at it next time.

With those times you def can't talk shit, but like renz said...your sixty foots should be alot lower 1.6-1.8. I have not done any better than a 1.8 both times out but people have done it. My hat is off to you for actually taking it to the track...I will call you the nex time I go so we can hang out and bs...later

How was Island on Friday? I've been trying to get to a Friday night race since they opened last month. Usually it's not real crowded and you can get as many runs in as you'd like (weather permitting).

I'm going to try to get there next Friday (the 9th).

Regarding your times, your launch is hurting your ET but that's easy to fix with practice. I'm not sure why your MPH is low. MPH generally isn't affected by the launch unless you REALLY screw it up (which you didn't). With AWD I'm not sure if that logic holds. I only ran my truck once - it trapped 96. The ET was 13.7 with a 1.77 60' time. It was stock except for the ATR exhaust. I doubt I'd have picked up 3-5 MPH over stock with just the exhaust. I still had the stock cat on it. I don't have a ton of experience with the Typhoons at the track but based on your MPH I'd say you're missing some HP.

Jim:
Island was empty on Friday. The only time there were more than 2 cars deep into the staging lanes was around 8:15 when the clouds were rolling in but the rain hadn't started yet. If I took my first run after I passed tech, I could have taken as many trips as I wanted over the course of an hour and a half.

Derek:
If you're coming this way, definately give me a call. Your old company car knows where I live (for the next couple of months anyway).

Eric:
I know how to launch it on the street, I just haven't figured out how to time everything just right before the christmas tree lights up.

In case you don't know, you can forget about the tree. On Friday nights they run a Pro tree which is very hard to launch against with a turbo. All the ambers light up, then the green. On regular race days and test-n-tune they runa Sportsman tree which counts the ambers down (gives you time to spool the turbo). The clock doesn't start ticking until you move so you can take all the time you want to make sure you get your launch down. Waiting will only show in your R/T, which does not factor into your ET and will only hurt you if you're bracket racing (which you're not on Fridays).

It definitely looks that way. I?d get that sucker on Datamaster ASAP.

My guess is you have some knock issues which are killing your top end power. Whether true knock or just noise, based on your mph, it appears you aren?t getting the power a properly advanced motor should make.

As a reference, my Slowclone trapped 96-98mph the time I took it to the track. All I had was a gutted cat (with REALY shitty mufflers) and a manual boost controller set to 14-15psi. I assume stock for stock, a Ty might be a mph or two slower through the traps since it's doing more work.

Another thought:

Are you relying on the stock boost gauge and boost controller? Neither of mine worked very well when I got the truck. The stock boost gauge is simply a sick joke. Maybe you aren?t making the boost you should be.

Also, if you have problems creeping through the staging lights when trying to boost launch (I did, very badly), the oversized rear wheel cylinder and brake shoe (buy two sets, and use the larger portion for both the front and back shoe) upgrade works awesome and costs next to nothing. I can launch my truck at 10psi or more now without doing the neutral rev thingy.

A boost launch should knock off 3/4 of second off those times. As stated by others the MPH seems low.

Jim:
I thought those damn amber lights lit up fast. Next time I go, I'll leave the line when I'm good and ready.

Justin:
Thanks for the brake ideas. I'll look into that. I need to put new pads on the front, so I might as well screw with the rears too. And yes, everything mechanical on my truck (except the hardwired, upgraded IC pump) is bone stock, so I'm using the stock boost control and the stock boost gauge. I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and get a real boost gauge and upgrade to some better boost control. While I'm at it, I should also throw in an aftermarket temp gauge since my stock one stays on 0 now.

They say the Pro tree simulates a stoplight better thus keeping with the Friday Nite Street Legal Drags theme. I think it makes it unneccessarily harder (but any turbo guy would say that).

You still need to stage, but you don't have to worry about launching with the green. Once it's green you can leave any time. Take your time and launch it right.

well if he's pushing through his brakes.....it has nothing to do with the tree :) Maybe you have a smaug-style leaking caliper

I can hold 8lbs of boost at the line, with a leaky caliper.
