Oh boy! miss fixed - new problem

So while I went to replace the ign. mod. on the dist. I noticed on the top of the rotating ring piece , the one that is a piece of sheet metal rivited to something else below it & has a point sticking out for each cyl. Was broke & the section that had 2 of the 6 points on it was missing. Like the points representimg 2 cyls. for the hall sw.
So I'm wondering how it ever ran at all & hopeing I found the prob. So I put in a rebuilt Autozone stock dist., which looks alot diff. But ,gee itdon't have broken parts on it.
So it starts right up, shut it off ,then try to start it again & it acts like there's no spark, just cranks. Check spark, loud & clear.
try diff. settingson the idle trim pot ,thats with the DFI (this has helped in the past) no good.
Smells rich, pull a plug , not bad , still just cranks, change DFI for ECM, starts, AF meter jumping up & dn (alittle more than normal)
Hook up DFI ,idels ,acts better. Turn off , won't start , just cranks ( DFI was just fixed, by the way) put back ECM, starts, idles like crap, does stall. A/F not hardly showing. Drive it, idel bad, but misses are gone-HALAULA!!!!!!!!!!. Bearly idles, stalls , but does start right back up, this is the ECM not DFI.

So now :x  'm thinking O2 or knock sensor going nuts???

did you check the timing? if i replaced the distibutor i would check the timing before i checked anything else. the distributor may look like its in the right spot but be off a couple degrees. you did mark a spot where the old rotor was pointing before you took it off didnt you?

I didn't check the timing, cause I can adjust it 5 deg either way in the cab, made no diff. Anyway would that make it so the DFI starts once & then not ,but the ECM starts fine always?

if the timing is ok i would start wondering about the dis. itself or the ignition module. kinda hard to diagnose this one over the net...

At the suggestion of a respected board member I cast aside my distaste for Auto Zone parts and purchased their distributor. I am very happy with it. Dont use the ignition module that comes with it though, get an AC Delco unit (also good advise from the respectable board member).

I pm Daron about this a few months ago he mentioned to change the ignition module from the autozone distro to an AC Module I followed his advice but upon doing so I realized that in fact the ignition module that I have is an AC delco module.... I guess autozone was getting many complaints on the distro and they decided to use a better module Im not sure when they made the factory change but I've had my distributor for about a year. But I guess I can recommend to double check the module to see if its an AC Delco one..

Isnt a Ignition Module a Ignition Module? I went the cheap route and instead of buying the AC Delco one, i bought the cheaper one... GP Sorenson or somthing like that...

I have a 'no start' problem also, just cranks, no spark. But only when HOT.

No telling when it will act up.

Prob. should have bought the ac delco huh??

Oh yeah definately should have bought a quality part.... Well I double checked my autozone distributor and its a ac delco ignition module unit.

autozone distributer

I tried to buy a sy distributer at Autozone, the part they had listed is not the right. so I had to replace all the guts in the original one. Bill
