Not mentioned, but perhaps relevent, is the following;
1. A cheap/poorly designed suspension (front, rear, ladder, 3-link, 4-link, whatever) is worse than stock.
2. An expensive suspension system, poorly adjusted, is worse than stock.
3. An expensive suspension system, poorly designed for its intended application
"can be" worse than stock (hiway, dragracing, autocrossing, winter/summer driving, etc)
4. An expensive suspension system, and bad tires, rims, adapters, shocks, etc is worse than stock.
5. A good rear suspension, and bad front suspension (ball joints, etc) is worse than stock.
6. A good suspension system, and bad/inadequate brakes, axles, propshafts, ujoints, driveshafts, diffs, steering components is worse than stock.
7. A good suspension system, and lots of body, frame flexing, is a bad thing.

Granted, stock systems (leaf & torsion bars) arent that great, but in proper working
condition they are safe, adequate for racing/hiway driving, maintenance friendly,
and work with other GM components (sway bar, bump stops, spring rates, etc).
Some of the hacked up "shiny" suspensions installed are sometimes just dangerous...IMHO.

Not try to be a PIA, the stock SyTy suspension is a 4x4 front suspension and the rear is an old slapped on rear leaf springs set up (read cheap) they have been using for many many years (I think leaf springs have been in Automobile use for 100 years). Yeah GM adjust the spring rates and shocks, but they didn't do too much testing because the front ball joints are really on the adge of binding.

I am sure the rear suspension is not improved dramatically over any of the 60's cars using the same setup. (The shock and spring technology are probably the only real improvements) While I agree a poorly design suspension can be bad, it probably doesn't take a good designer much effort to improve what we have. It may take a while to optomize it, but most of the time suspension designers are re-using designs and adapting them. I am not saying it is easy to do. I wouldn't want to be the one who takes a generic suspension and tries to do a one off adaptation. Suspension geometery is something not to be take lightly.

Its just an optical illlusion, that bracket is coming off at a 45 degree angle and welded to the rear end. The 'rubbing' your seeing is the welds.

:rotf: Nevermind, I see you changed your post...

Yeah, I realized that I was looking at the refletion of the weld in the background.

Any rear suspension will be a compromise someway.

Stock is compromise on handling for warranty, cost to manufacture, etc etc.

4 link will be typically more drag race, but not the best for handling, cost be somewhat higher.

Custom like Adam had done probably fits his desires like he wants, although might not be best for everybody (I see cost is complicated install)

So is there a best suspension, nope. All what you want to do, how much you want to spend, etc.

Somewhat like colors, everybody knows the only good color is black.
