Speaker replacement

Are there any good options for OEM size replacement speakers in the Syclones? I have been told that I should put a pair of 6x9s in boxes in the rear, but I am not sure. What can be done to get good sound?

The factory speaker sizes and location aren't the best for sound, 4x6 fronts and 4x10 rears.

I can get 4x10 to 6x9 speaker adapters if you want to run 6x9's in your factory location. I have not used them yet on my SY but will be soon. I am sure you will have to do some modification to the SY rear panel considering it is one piece. I can get the adapters for $29 per pair if anyone is interested.

I'm planning on getting polk dp461p up front and mmc410 for the back. Or I will see if 5" components will fit in the back, maybe 5.25". Haven't had time to look at it yet and decide.

I have a set components in the front doors where the pockets are and one shallow 10" sub. I wouldn't bother putting component in the stock speaker locations, its not that great of placement, plus its not sealed, so their is a lot of cancelation of mid bass frequencies.

I have Pioneers 2 way 4x10, and 3 ways up front with a year old Pioneer deck. and to be honest the sound is ok 10x better then stock. I think I need more bass. The good thing is that I didn't have to cut any wires to get it to work that is what sold me.

I found that most of the problem with the front speakers is the grilles. I tried 3 different speakers (Pioneer, Infinity, Polk) and they all sounded like crap until I finally cut out the oval grille area. I don't like how it looks, but love how it sounds.

You could always pick up some grill cloth at radio shack and some spray adhesive to cover the grilles. Whala... like new again.

Not that many would want to do this to their SY, but i used a heat gun to melt :oops: the heat ducts under the speakers in the dash, pushed in the new speakers i had, used dynamat to seal the enclosure, removed all excess plastic from the grilles, still looks stock but was able to fit a much better driver in the front stock locations, added a 10in sub behind the seat and was done with it.

I have since removed all that and am building custom kick panels with 6 1/2 components and fiberglass amprack and sub box in the bed, which is ported into the cab. This will sound so much better when done, somewhere around 1500 watts from the 5 speakers i will be using. :tup: :tup: small but powerfull! :tup:

I just got done looking at those on crutchfield and was going to ask about them here. How do you like them? They seem to have generated some good responses. The only question I have left is, how hard/easy were they to install? The reason I ask is because of this response:

I replaced the factory 4x10's in my 91 s-10 with these kenwood 4x10's and they make a huge difference in the sound. I had destroyed the cheap paper ones by cranking up the music and needed ones that could handle what I would be pushing through them, and for a decent price. these met the bill perfectly. They have a good bit of bass, with great highs and mids.
Only problem I had was installing them (though not crutchfield's nor kenwood's fault, it was due to the genius that designed the rear pillars in the truck) I actually had to look in a mirror with a tiny ratchet reaching around the pillar to replace them, it took 3 hours.
For the price, however, you cannot go wrong with these speakers.

I got a set of these to install in my brother's '87 regal... review forthcoming.
I have a firm rule of not buying speakers that I haven't listened to... so I use other people as guinea pigs. :)

Quality-wise, they look quite good, and include nice crossovers. I don't buy in to the "style" aspect of speakers (that's not what they're for), but they are pretty.

Neat thing, is that they fit exactly in the GM rear speaker mount brackets.

I replaced all four of my speakers in my Sy, i put the best infinity 4x6 plates which sounds so good. Then for the rear i put 4x10 memphis, they sound really good for how weird of a shape they are. Then i finished it off with a custom built box that i made to fit a 8" kicker solo baric. that thing hits deep. i would recommend either of those speakers to any body that wants to upgrade the stock speakers.

Steve, If I recall right it wasn't that bad. I changed out both the front and the rear speakers in about 2 hours start to finish taking time out for dinner. Like I said in my early posting I would use the following for the front. The sound even from the stock radio was improved to the point, that the guys at work ask if I change radios.

4x10's went in like cake compared to the 4x6's. The crossover even fit behind the panel. I mounted it to the open spot on the panel.
