starting issue?

well like the title says. I have an issue with my Ty. First off I am running Bigstuff3 and have limited knowledge of how to use it. Here goes. When I start the truck for the first time in the morning or when ever it is sat and cooled down the truck cranks and fires right up and seems great for about three seconds and then it stalls. It does this everytime it is started cold. Then when I start it again I get a very hard start (cranking little cough).
Upon firing up it blows smoke for a short time then it idles smooth and runs somewhat well. I do have a relocated battery to the rear and have done some reading in reguards to having a poor ground causing a similar issue. I found that the negetive cable off the battery goes down to the frame (well actually it looks like to the bumper support). I was considering running this cable further towards the engine bay in hopes that this could be a cause for this issue. I also quickly looked for the ground wires that are suppose to run from the engine to the frame and or the fire wall. I couldn"t find either. I am thinking I have a poor grounding path.Any help would be great.:dunno:

Re: starting issue?

Sounds more like a startup fueling issue to me - but if you can't find those grounds then yeah I'd be concerned.

I find it hard to believe the starter would function properly though if they were indeed completely missing.

Re: starting issue?

Sounds like a tuning issue. Seems the tune is far too rich on cold start.

If the engine still has solid mounts, don't worry about the ground from the engine to the frame, the mounts are a very good ground path.

Re: starting issue?

I am going to check voltages later tonight and try to atleast improve the grounding system.
Since the engine was rebuilt I have had some strange electrical issues. The electric fans went out, gauge blip with blinkers on, the voltage to the starter must be messed up I am thinking because after the initial start the bendix doesn't seem to engage fully and will grind a bit.what should the fuel pressure be and what about a bad FPR? I will see what I find.As for the ground through the motor mounts. I agree but as the ground is terminated to the bumper support and not directly to the frame I thought it might be less than ideal.

I get black smoke and some water out of the tail pipe. I haven't had a chance to do anything as I got a boo boo at work. Nothing major just a couple stitches. They are just in a sucky spot. Tip of the ring finger on my right hand. I will get out there tonight an look around and do some swearing. LOL. We will see.

Man be carefull you need those fingers when working !!!
Do you have a wideband gauge installed this will help you
find out if your tune is rich at start up or maybe a vacuum
hose on the map sensor got a crack if your well do a quick
vacuum hose check before going in the tune !!

Re: starting issue?

Just finished installing the Sportmachines vac line kit. Nice stuff. Although I can't seem to find a vac ball on my truck anywhere. I know it is supposed to be under the battery but mine is not. Anyway, I tested the voltage to various spots on the frame, rad support, fenders, firewall, and the engine itself. The voltage is the same no matter where I check all the way to the battery. Kinda blows the bad ground theory I had. I am going to start it and check the voltage from the alt and also watch the voltage just after start to the ECM. I still need to wire up my new electric ran relays also. I found something inline of my vac system that looks like a check valve but I don't think it is as air passes both ways.
It is clear and kind of resembles a filter of sorts. May take a pic of it to see if anyone knows what it is. what is my fuel pressure supposed to be at idle? I drained my catch can
for the PCV system and there is fuel mixed in with the oil. I think i am pig rich. We will see.
i also found the ground strap that I thought was missing. Mine goes from the drivers head to the firewall.
I was looking on the passengers side.

Some eliminate the vac ball. I did. It's not necessary. Mostly enables the hvac to work correctly when you are in positive vac (boost).

Re: starting issue?

Finalized my dual fan install with dual relays. Worked on the grounding issue. Started looking into fuel system hoping something would jump out at me as a reason for the starting issue. I was going to start the truck and pull the vac line from the afpr to see if I had a torn diaphram. I keyed on the ignition to get some fuel pressure and it went to 40 psi
as usual then quickly dropped to 35 and was slowly dropping. so I keyed the ignition again it went back up to 40 psi but then slowly dropped. Is this a afpr situation or a possible injector stuck open. What should be my next step?

I already asked but DOES YOUR OIL SMELL LIKE GAS????

Re: starting issue?

yes the oil smeels like fuel. What now?

Pull the vac line off the FPR and if it smells like gas, then the diaphragm in your FPR is broken (It is,that's why I asked)

Replace FPR,change oil and hope your bearings didn't get washed.

No prob.

Re: starting issue?

I have already started looking for a replacement. I hope not (bearings). I don't have 1000 miles on the rebuild.

Re: starting issue?

I went through the same thing (with no real help.None)that's why I try to bring this obvious fatal defect up to anybody I can, once they smell their dipstick.

And you have a code 45 right?

Re: starting issue?

I don't know about a code. I went out and removed the vac line from the afpr with it running
and covered the vac line with my finger and watched the port on top of the afpr for any fuel.
After 3 minutes I had no fuel coming out. It is hard to say by smelling the vac lines as I just put them in last night. They did not smell like fuel though. I was able to start the truck and feather the gas when it wanted to stall. I did this once and the truck ran perfect and did not try to stall again. I also didn't get any smoke from the tail pipe. I am thinking it is a tuning thing like others have said. Unless the test I did with the AFPR is the wrong way to check it. I did notice that the truck wanted to stall with the vac line unplugged and not capped. On another note the fans work fantastic! Thanks for all the help Jimmy.
Thanks to everyone else. Still looking for input.

Re: starting issue?

The fuel pressure dropping is either the fuel pump or what I just told you is wrong.

:D

Re: starting issue?

I am just going to buy a new fuel pressure reg. This truck eats money anyway, and I haven't fed it yet this week! LOL I have a Kirban unit now. Any recomendations?
