Which Turbo to go with?

My Ty is bone stock, nothing done except 3" cat back exhaust. It seems to run pretty good for a stocker. The only issue i have is that I am pretty sure the old stock turbo oil seals are leaking especially on the exhaust side. Every time i start her up she will give a puff of smoke then smoke is instantly gone. Last time i looked at the compressor it seemed ok with no play in the shaft. The turbo is probably still ok but I just want to start looking around for a good replacement for a bone stock motor. I plan on getting it tuned by Nolan just dont know if i should change the turbo first. If i have to put a different stall in i will, no big deal. And any other upgrades to match the turbo. Thinking of getting an alky set up to and get it tuned for that also. 20G? I could probably just ask Nolan, but I would like to also hear what you guys think.

I bought the RPM Stage 1 turbo myself. Don't know how it runs just yet as I haven't got it installed yet but I'm on vacation right now so I'm hoping to get it done this week. It's a direct bolt on but from what I've seen in other threads it's a pretty tight fit.

If it smokes when you crank it up it is not the turbo that is leaking it is the valve guide seals in the head that need to be replace common problem.

I asked that question before on here and there were mixed opinions. Some said it could be valve seals and some said it could be turbo. One guy said he changed his turbo and it went away. I just assume its the turbo because i worked on a turbo hayabusa that did the identical thing until we put a new turbo on. Who knows could be valve seals. Does not smoke any other time except start up.

A 20G or and RPM direct replacement would be good for a stock motor. You could also go with a PTE 44 or 52 if you want to change downpipes and get a little more out of it.

change your calve seals, get the good ones, 4.3s, and 5.7s are notorious for this. i've seen chevey trucks with under 30,000 miles do it. real simple job. hardest part is getting the one by the brake booster. it's easier and cheaper than a turbo. it's common enough it could almost be considered part of a tune up. but i'll give you the same turbo recomendation i give everyone who asks your question. you need THIS turbo, maybe two.

A 20G turbo w/a 10 cm exhaust housing,,,@ the most a 12 CM housing. w/a stock stall converter.

Better yet ,a 57 mm compressor wheel installed onto a TD06H-20G turbo w/10 or 12 cm turbine housing. :2cents:

Nice turbo recommendation :rotf:
I would listen to the SyTyers here. Depending your mileage you could get away with replacing valve seals. If that does not do the trick, then move on to turbo upgrade. Guess it all depends on what you want to do with your truck. Get the most out of a stock motor in a safe way. I know Nolan won’t take you in the wrong direction. He always had my best interest in mind, rather than his wallet.

dont do a 12cm2 houseing unless you get a converter and a tune...it will be a slug with out them :2cents: If Nolan is gonna tune your truck, listen to him very closely.....:2cents:

you might need a mild stall for my turbo recommendation. 4500 or 5500 might cover it

My converter stalls to 2100 rpm & it is not tuned,but runs low 12's,,and I even have a 60-1 heavy compressor wheel installed.

I would check your pcv valves also. If one is stuck open it could be letting oil into the turbo inlet

I just pick up a Ty that has 49,000 org. miles but needs a new turbo do to setting for the last 8 years the seals dried up. Anyway I want to make this a high 11 sec. truck what turbo down pipe exhaust chip and inj. Should be used??

Sorry to hijack the tread but I was looking for info and see a lot of people already posting that seem to know what your doing with these trucks! I have a GN but am new to the Ty and looking for some help :)

Actually I need to change that we moved were in New Boston now :tup:

Also looking for a High 11 sec. truck so shoot me what will need to be done to get there. I know bigger injectors Alky system Bigger fuel pump bigger turbo stall and down pipe. and a new chip or Tune as you guys seem to call it on this site ;)
Anything else??
And where do I get all this stuff from Im finding one place RPM is that it?? I want a Ball bearing turbo also as they spool the best :)
