Alky install on Ty

Well thanks for the gauge suggestion Don, I had to run to the hardware store and buy a -4 T to hook up a small liquid filled fuel pressure gauge. I installed it after the filter on the firewall, idle and test button. Gain set too 8 on controller, amazingly I must have dead on guessed the pressure set screw on the pump. I got exactly 50psi and the engine responded more to this than any previous test. Rolled the gain back to 6 and solid red. PERFECT! This is exactly what Julio sets his pumps too for a single 15 nozzle. Found his response on another LS forum to a guy with the same issue.

Now after that test I discovered the nozzle elbow has a leak, either from the sprayer side threads or the -4 inlet fitting. I did not use Teflon tape on these connections to avoid clogging the sprayer. So I'll remove and inspect the fitting later, luckily where I have the nozzle all I have to do is remove the inlet hose to the IC to remove the fitting. On the sprayer side of the elbow I noticed the threads had been tapped deeper and the inside of the elbow had been massaged out. I'm guessing this allows for the distance needed for the sprayer inside the elbow. I'm almost certain this is where my leak is. I'll confirm later and hopefully have it fixed tomorrow AM and move on to tuning.

Re: Alky install on Ty

My :2cents:? NEVER use Teflon tape. Locktite makes a mich better product. Liquid. Prevents fitting from loosening (one of Teflon's problems) and doesn't leak.

Now I'm curious. When back from vacation I'll check pressure like you have done.

Thanks

I agree on the locktite Don, I'm going to call Julio on Monday to confirm his response to that question I read on another forum from 2012 confirming the 50psi on position 8 gain. I believe it's important to the settings defaulted in the PAC. Kinda like having base fuel pressure set properly for a tune.

Enjoy your vacation, I sure could use one

Update: upon inspection of the nozzle fittings, no problems with threads. Could have had one turn more? I reassembled the nozzle fittings to the elbow with red high temp locktite. I may have put one more turn this time. Let it dry over night and recheck for leaks tomorrow morning.

Another point that Julio made to me about my point to experiment pre IC is that the flash point of the meth is 52-54*F. As soon as the meth is injected into the intake air it is flashed from a liquid to an ignitable vapor. I don't see vapor having a problem passing through the IC. As Julio could not agree or disagree with my experiment he made a few important points. Too cold of intake temps can cause a performance loss using alky. The motor tuned with alky will make its most power with just the right amount. Basically saying tuning for the lowest IAT temps can actually make less power spraying. I explained to him I'm circuit racing and trying to help keep the stock IC from getting heat soaked and still get the same octane effect adding the alky to aid with higher boost. Only way to find out is too tune it and see what the data shows. 12 miles of hauling ass is more brutal to the stock IC than a 1/4mile pass. I need all the help I can get as a a2a is not an option with this motor.

Re: Alky install on Ty

I'd agree on the "too cold" point. I've seen it with my truck. Utterly unscientific but that was my impression.

Well a short but valuable step in this tuning process. The locktite fixed the leak, unable to tune due to my hard drive going out on my old vista driven HP. So after a mothers day brunch and a little TLC to my mom, she has agreed to let me barrow her dell with windows 7. At first I was nervous it wouldn't work as I've heard BS3 works best with XP and Vista. I attempted to use my gf's laptop with windows 8 and had no luck getting the driver to work for the com port. So 10pm my moms notebook is working the BS3 with windows 7, sigh.....BIG RELIEF. Thanks Mom!

I configure my dash, save, upload my current tune and make a quick drive being 85* outside. IAT's staying around 110 cruising I make a part throttle to 10psi watching my fuel correction. I noticed the led came on at 5psi and stays red, ok pump not building 50+psi. I raise the gain from 4 to 8 and get a green LED at 8psi. Trying again I notice my afr at 10psi is safe 10.20 with -25% fuel correction. IAT dropped from 120*F to 80*F and settled back around 105*F. So I got one quick 30%TPS 10psi log to start correcting my fuel table before I add more TPS. I know I have the gain maxed at 8 to get 50+PSI from the pump at 8PSI. I'll settle for this now, I may have to increase initial to get more IAT drop sense I'm spraying PRE IC. Update tomorrow evening

I'm getting really close on my alky tune. Previous pump gas tune is 18psi@14* timing, fuel correction is +/- 1.5% with 75-80% injector DC.

Currently with the alky I'm at 20psi@14* timing, fuel correction is +/- 5% with 60% injector DC. Tomorrow I should have the fuel much closer and I can start adding timing and small changes to fuel table.

On average my IAT temp drop spraying is 30*, I compared to my previous tune which would rise 20* by the end of a run and stay there till fluid cooled from cruising. The spray pre IC has been dropping into the high 70's from 110, and settles back quickly to 110 after a run. I'll try and post up a few screenshots comparing logs as I get the alky tune closer.

Normal IAT seems a bit high 110. Is your intercooler plumbing all stock?

Stock upper and lower with soft lines driver side. Johnson pump and straight water. This is normal operating temps under normal driving in 85* temps. Not bad in my opinion. I'm tuning for normal conditions, not cold start to run down the 1/4, which could yield much lower temps

They could be better if you do some upgrades IMO.

My IAT are no more than 100 on a 90-100 + degree day.
I use an ATR aux cooler I also use the stock metal lines still.
One other thing I have is the intercooler water goes through my heater core.

What kind of timing is everyone running with meth? I'm within 3% correction on my fuel table and I'm ready to start adding timing. I'm currently at 20psi with a conservative 14* from my pump gas tune

Re: Alky install on Ty

How much hotter? And what evidence do you have? I could not find any info on temps pre-IC vs post-IC. Yea I've been told it's better to be post-IC, based on assumptions.
I don't mind debating the pro's and con's in this thread. I'm more challenged to do it based on the lack of evidence I found. I believe the alky directly contacting the IATS is responsible for the lower intake temps. I want to experiment and see if I can get close to same results pre IC which I believe would confirm more accurate IAT data.

Installing the nozzle there will have the majority of the cooling absorbed by thenintercooler fins and not cool the air.

For reference, I have hose lengths for this setup.

Tank to pump 18"

Pump to filter 14' 6"

Filter to nozzle 32"

That's great Don, I imagined 18* at 20psi should get me the 12 I'm looking for. When I'm not relying on daily driving the Ty I'll turn up the timing and hit the strip on all 3 tunes. Weather is getting nice here, I'm happy with the current alky tune. It kept the detonation away when I was running circuit in early summer. My T15 4x4 is almost done so I can play with the Ty again
