Crossover pipe material?

As the title states, what kind of metal is the crossover pipe made of? Doesn't seem like just a mild steel but it is magnetic. Trying to weld up am external wastegate and I want to make sure I have the right tools for the job.

There was an SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) paper written by the Syclone development team about the engine design. According to that paper, the crossover pipe is stainless steel.

Thank you for the replies. I am welding with a MIG welder, I will have to get different wire and gas for stainless. I was thinking it was made of stainless, but was surprised that it was so magnetic. I will probably mock everything up and take it to someone with a TIG welder instead of spending more money on gas and wire and maybe having less than stellar results. The flange and pipe I got are mild steel so I should get stainless parts to weld up.

You just need a small bottle of tri mix welding gas. Helium/argon/C02.

The stainless wire is rather cheap. I actually have a roll of mig wire I occasionally use for tig filler on super small projects.

I'm guessing since the part is magnetic, it is in the 400 series of stainless.

If it were mine I'd just MIG it with standard wire for mild steel.. It will be fine.. I've welded mild to stainless and vise-versa many times and never had an issue..

Most stainless exhaust pipe is only coated with stainless. I have welded mild steel and stainless pipe as well. It welds very nice. The only issue is you lose your corrosion protection when you weld the stainless pipe with steel wire. The welded area will always rust. Unless you can tig weld it with stainless wire, your options are limited.

Have welded on external gate tube and flanges to a few. MIG it. No problems. The amount of rust and corrosion I have seen on others Sy and Ty crossovers makes me believe its a really really low grade.
When I build exhaust and pieces. Say from 304 SS. I TIG it of course. Never seen an exhaust that was SS coated per say. Only aluminized coating which is typically done on mild steel.
