drain plug in stock tranny pan?

Has anyone put a drain plug in the stock tranny pan before? i am looking to drill a hole in my pan and tap it. so i have a plug to drain it. Is this possible with the stock pan? Do i need to worry about clearance for drill and tapping? And what part of the pan would i put the plug in?

the pan is not thick enough to tap. it would be better to weld something to the pan and then drill a hole through the fitting.

I purchased a derale tranny pan and it already had the drain plug.
about $80 shipped and well worth it...

Yeah, I've got a drain plug in the stock pan until I can afford to get a Derale or a TCI. It is a Fairbank plug but I'm sure Jegs or Summit carries it. I paid $10 for mine but I could just walk in a get it. I can measure the location of mine if you want so you'll know where to drill the 1/2" hole so the plug doesn't hit anything inside. If you want, I'll get you one and mail it to you so you don't have to pay more for shipping than the part costs. It has a special nut on the inside machined for an included o-ring, then it has the "tapped bolt" that goes through the pan with a teflon washer for it. The plug is a 1/8" NPT brass plug. It is sooooo nice not to dump fluid on your head when you change the fluid or drop your tranny 3 times in a week :smile:
