engine build questions

okay just a few questions to help me sort a few things out.

what oil pump is everyone running on their rebuilds? just a oem replacement or a higher volume/pressure? hardened shaft?

how about bearings? what's the prefered set of bearings for realiablity?

which harmonic balancer?

what size main studs on four bolt conversion? is stock size strong enough or should i have it stepped up one size?

and i need the name or two of someone to port my heads, since i got them off and hate to waste a set of head gaskets.

i'm tryin to order these parts from iraq so i'm sure some if not all of them sound like dumb questions. i know there's more questions i got but i've forgotten them so i'll post them up as i remember.

Thanks Garry

Re: engine build questions

That's a long distance order!!! :)

I used a Moroso oil pump High Volume.
Clevite77 bearings
ARP stud kit for a sbc 4bolt conversion. You'll have a couple extra but it's the same setup.
I hate porting Iron but I did my wife's L35 heads.. got way over 30hrs in them. Give Waller a call and see if he does that. Might be able to swap out a set that's already done...
Sounds good man! When are you coming home?

Re: engine build questions

on the clevite bearings get the ones with and H at the end not a P they have a 125 degree angle for better oiling they sould say high performance or something on the box

High volume is the only pump to have high pressure will wash out you bearings and stock the oil pressure is not as steady at higher rpms

Re: engine build questions

I am curious about the harmonic balancer too....stock is fine right, or should it be replaced with a HI PERF one ? ---

Re: engine build questions

The Balancer is all about how much rpm you are going to be running? pioneer make a nice if you going to stay below 5600 rpm.

As for the oil pump I used the Melling high volume oil pump (Mel-55A) with an ARP shaft it is better to over build then under build your oiling system.

and bearings "Foot Performance" is right, Clevitte 77 high performance main bearings with a H

Heads, one word, VORTEC

All just my :2cents:

Re: engine build questions

I was planning on building an engine later and was think 5600 was a little low becuase i am used to 7800-9000 on a 302 small block chevy but thee trucks you can put really good power to the ground and keep it at around 5600 and a SBC (wich the 4.2 block is based) will run dang near forever at that rpm and make like i said really good power. maybe it is that big round thing on the passenger side :rotf: :rotf: :rotf:

Re: engine build questions

One issue that comes up with our engines and high RPM is the stock crank is only cast and the only other option is a $$$ billet crank. I imagine the stock block strength also comes into play as well. Keeping the rpm's down saves the lower end of the truck.

Re: engine build questions

I think I run a Melling too.... I got my M's Mixed up.

Our engine's are not like Small blocks when it comes to RPM. Don't try spinning it hard It won't make any more power and it'll come apart. Boosted engine's are not like N/A what so ever. Throw out everything you know about small blocks. I learned that with Turbo Buicks when I made the switch from Small block/No2 stuff. It's a learning curve but well worth the effort!

Oh yea.. Waller helped me alot on the stuff I needed. .03Cts ;)

RPM = Ruins Peoples Motors. :) or something like that.

Re: engine build questions

okay dokie, clevite 77 hipo bearings, mororso high volume pump and hardened shaft, arp bolt set.

yeah it's the pontiac heads i got off ya ckieth, i figure i should get the ported and such while i haven't put them on, but maybe i should swap them for some vortecs. :rotf: :rotf:

now all i gotta do is pick out a cam and turbo and put my heads together and i'll have all the parts for the engine.
