film on cladding returns

About a year ago I started noticing a dull film would accumulate on the cladding. It seems to appear on the sides but not the front or rear. It will rub off but then it comes back in a week or two. I have washed, and polished and waxed and it still returns. Truck stays inside. Anyone else ever experienced this?

Jim,

I have the exact same thing happen. On the sides only, its weird. My only guess is that the side cladding is made differently and all that protectant shine crap I've put on over the years is bleeding out of the pores. Mine also sits in a garage under a cover, so moisture might also be contributing to the problem.

Sorry, I have no fixes for this. Anybody?

Matt

YOU ARE RIGHT!! THEY NEED TO BE STRIPPED AND PRIMER SURFACER/SEALER COATED THEN REPAINTED WITH BASE COAT/CLEAR COAT IT HAPPENED TO ALL OF MINE THAT ARE THAT CRAP ASS ARGENT GRAY FROM GMC AND i THOUGHT IT WAS MY TRUCKS... NICE KNOW IT WAS NOT DONE IN VIEN...DOUG  IT HAPPENED ON ALL 6 OF MY XXXXXXX/'ARGENT GRAY COLORED VEHICLES

Re: film on cladding returns

just throw a little back to black on them (if they are black) and all is good, had the same problem before I started using it. did the same things (buff, wax, polish) and the only thing that worked was back to black.....you do have to reapply it after you wash your truck though....

Same thing happens on my Ty's painted cladding...just the sides...& is garaged 24x7 as well. Surely there's got be be a solution other than a complete strip & repaint of the cladding(?)

Re: film on cladding returns

Mine are the original factory black (no paint). Garage is climate controlled so it's not a moisture issue. It must be some chemical that was used in producing the sides that was not used in making the front and reat and now that something is coming out of the plastic. I'm not up for stripping and painting so if anyone ever finds a solution, please let me know.

I am having the same problem. I am debating on having my cladding painted. My front bumper looks like it was painted satin and it doesn't do this. I have tried Back to Black, Black Crome, Stoners trim shine. They all seem to help but they just don't last.

I notice the same thing. Someday I will paint my cladding, but I not going to use any more silicon products for the cladding to absorb. So I just deal with it.

Yes, it can even happen to the SyTyJedi. Noticed it after the truck sat for awhile in the garage. Must be the Zaino polish coming back up to the top.

I think I found something that corrects the problem. Plexus removes the film, gives a nice shine, and the film has not returned in 2 weeks like it did before. Plexus is made to clean, polish and protect plastic. Works great.

Just checked out their website & it looks pretty good. Were you able to find it locally (i.e. auto parts stores)? I'd like to give it a try...

I got mine at a motorcycle shop. It's used on plastic windshields and visors, etc. Not sure where else sells it. It also did a great job of quickly removing some streaks on my tinted windows that I was having a hard time removing before.

But this darn fog keeps coming back on the side cladding just days after polishing. Anyone else experience this?

Happens to mine too.

Just an FYI... even though the cladding looks like it's not painted, it is. I would have sworn it was bare plastic till I broke the right front arch on my move from Wyoming to Oklahoma. Took it to the loal Chevrolet dealer and they used the factory formula to paint it and it matches perfectly. But, it still looks like raw, unpainted plastic - I guess it's the satin finish that makes it look like that.

I used to design plastic parts for a living and I can't figure out why it develops the film. Being painted and sealed, there should be no outgassing. Thank goodness it wipes off easily!

Re: film on cladding returns

The front and rear covers are a different grade of plastic. I'm sure they used this more flexible PUR due to possible impacts etc.

However the sides are made with a rather porous glass fiber reinforced plastic and I'm betting that humid climates are contributing to not so much an out-gassing but rather a purge of whatever products one is using that contain petroleum distillates.

The flat black paint is not a sealer nearly as perfect as say...a Urethane Base/clear coat finish .The flat finish allows absorption.....the Urethane does not.....thus the problem doesn't return once Urethane painted.

I certainly found this to be true after priming/painting mine. If you keep putting liquid penetrates on the flat paint, the problem will remain.

I'm betting that if you are seeking the OEM FLAT blk. finish and want it to be trouble free...you'll have to seal the cladding with a Urethane primer THEN a URETHANE flat product.-( If its available).
