Ha! Man this forum is dead!

Haha I remember back like 10 years ago when you'd have to sift through 4-5 pages in the Lounge just to find threads from the previous day, now there's threads on the first page that go back a month.

I'll admit I quit coming here just because it got aggravating to see guys with running trucks killing it on the track or on the streets, as my POS just sat in the garage taking up space and collecting dust because I didn't have the time or money to screw with it.

Did all the other old skool guys just lose interest or did they finally bid ado to these money pits? I know Morgan is still around, what about Jimmy, or Mike (aka the guy that sold the hex prop shaft bolts. I think he was Mike right?), Sportmachines is still around... What about the canadians? I think Norm was a guy building motors up in Calgary? (my memory is shot!).

The only reason it's back on my radar now is because I'm moving, and I don't wanna lug a broken truck with me. Plus, I plan on selling my DD back to VW as part of that diesel "scandal". So I figure, pocket the money from my DD, fix the Ty, and poof! Daily driver, AND no car payment!

Can't say how long I'll keep it as a DD though... that all depends on how "reliable" this thing is after I fix it. Anyone who knows my history of back luck with this POS, knows it couldn't possibly get any worse!

Fb really seemed to kill this place, occasionally a thread pops up and the few lurking members post up.
Last I knew, jimmy is banned lol

Only a Ty owner would say "I have a broken truck and am moving.... SO I AM GONNA SELL MY DD AND FIX MY TRUCK!"

Outstanding!

What's wrong with it?

I mainly just keep up on Facebook anymore.. I'm like you in that as my truck isn't running (have parts, just not the time/money/knowledge) it just keeps sitting in the barn and other hobbies have taken over a bit.

What was the reason Jimmy was banned.. I know he was always pretty much "picking a fight" so was it just too much of that?

Re: Ha! Man this forum is dead!

The type of people required to own, and or repair these trucks are a dying breed. It takes a lot to time and effort to get and keep a syty running good. The youth of today are lazy and entitled. Anything that might bring trials and tribulations is not worth the effort. That being said, for the amount of money a syty costs somebody could have a pretty nice-fast "normal" car. A chevelle, camero, nova etc. I have always wanted something different, even at the my own expense. All my buddies have your standard muscle cars with small or big block Chevys. They are always giving me a hard time about my 20,000 dollar terd. But when we go to local car shows, guess what? There is never a syty to be seen. That's when I get to razz them. Oh look another mustang, wait isn't that the 15th chevelle I've seen today...lol.

I like facebook better in some ways. It is a whole lot easier to post pictures, and members are forgiving. The search feature, along with the knowledge on this forum is really nice though.

I've given up on FB, with all the political crap going on.
I could remove the family & friends that are a pain in the ass, but don't want to start world war 3 so I'll stay away & hope this B/S blows over soon.

You can set it so the people that post all political stuff doesn't show up on your news feed.

I prefer syty.net over the facebook group.
I think the main reason this forum has slowed down (other than due to facebook) is because everything has been talked about already on here. Maybe people are actually using "search" and not starting the same topics over and over :rotf:

Facebook has ruined more than just this forum hahaha.

I ditched that crap a LONG time ago, and I can only imagine how bad it is now. I'm not on any social media with the exception of twitter and I only follow hockey and bands there. Can't get annoyed or angry about what you don't see!

Hahaha yeah I guess I'm a glutton for punishment! Going to attempt to get a definitive answer on what's wrong with it this weekend. It's been sitting for 2 years with what I believe is a blown head gasket. I'm gonna have to tear into this thing again myself, since no shop will touch it for under 4k, and one shop even laughed at me haha. It's just a matter of finding the time and a place to tear this thing down.

The conversational rules of etiquette have gone out the window with the advent of social media. Everyone feels compelled to use it as their soapbox to regurgitate the misinformation they read/heard on whichever news source to use to get "facts", or worse voice their "outrage" over every little thing they don't agree with

Haha maybe so, but there are still certain topics that may not have the exact answer you're looking for... I can't think of one off hand, but there have been times I've searched for something and gotten 15+ pages of results, sifted through all the threads and still didn't find the answer I was looking for. Or you find a thread that talks about the issue and it goes cold with no resolution. Lots of those!

Maybe one day there will be some retro hipster trend where everyone abandons social media cause they want the nostalgia of life before social media that they never had? Kinda like millenials trying to bring back cassette tapes

In regards to Jimmy getting banned... I never found him to be offensive or aggressive... I just always took what he said as a joke, unless it was legit info about the trucks. Everything else I just laughed at.

I don't have FB either. Mike who did the propshaft bolts is local and still has his Sy, but he's not very active.
Nolan was the Canadan who did the tuning. I haven't seen him post in a long, long time.

It's really simple honestly.

More people want a low maintenance car they can drive. Not an expensive never ending project that sits.

The involvement of these things is high.

Most are in shit condition when they are purchased as the previous owner tricked the buyer.

Death of a niche.

Re: Ha! Man this forum is dead!

I think FB has a lot more to do with the lack of activity on .net than people recognize. The FB users are the current crop of SyTy owners, so that's where they go / are. Over the 10 years I've been active on here we've all seen the n00bies come and go. They buy one, mod and dork it up, or never get the pile they purchased running at all, ask a bunch of questions or spell out their big plans to run 10's with bolt-ons, and are gone 6 months later. These are perfect candidates for the FB group.

Next is the demise of Chat. Chat was instrumental in the camaraderie that prevailed among SyTy peeps in 2008-2012-ish. The regulars on .net were regulars on Chat. Chat was instrumental in the success of Nats 2009. It played a lesser part for Nats 2012 and 13, but was still a media for participants to communicate and plan through. FB is a VERY good substitute for Chat, and has indeed fills the daily need for SyTy peeps to communicate through.

The OG Contributors' lack of current participation is harder to quantify. Fewer peeps equals fewer questions, threads, and activity in general. Peeps loose interest because there's nothing here. Die-hard participants may check-in and read, but aren't inclined to post or participate. It's a downhill slide. For awhile the majority of threads were For Sale posts, and there were still about 25 threads a day. Now with the lack of activity, even the FS ads have declined. Who's gonna bother to post their stuff for sale if there aren't any potential buyers reading?

It's too bad. I bought my first Ty in 1996, discovered the Mailing List in 1997, and have owned 7 others since. I've been around for almost 20 years. .Net was always my #1 site to check-in to, read, and participate on. I still check it a few times a week, but seldom log-on, and have been forced to disable my Private Messages (which I conducted a LOT of "Help Sessions" through, rather than on the forum) because of the behavior of a couple of individuals on here. I've grown weary of the continuous friction between Morgan and myself. (I think the crux of the friction is from "cultural" differences. East Coasters are wired differently than us free-spirit Californians).

I still read .net. And occasionally respond to a post or question, but highly doubt I'll be involved in any more discoveries or surveys such as what resulted in determining the color production numbers, or even that the cladding color IS on the SPID. A long-running perception is that "everything has been covered before", "no one searches", "why answer it again?" are reasons for not responding. I have a different reason: No one READS the damn posts. (At times I feel it is because the current generation of younger owners literally CAN'T read, which I blame the current public education system for). I've seen time and time again posts asking questions or describing how something works that has been covered before in detail, and the poster obviously didn't read it when it "went by" the week before. All the posts I've done and participated in regarding the T-case and AWD maladies, and I still shake my head in bewilderment because peeps still don't understand the simplest component IN a SyTy. I admit that the majority of my posts no longer exist, but they weren't read when they were current; why would they be read now?

I consider the people I've met over the years both on here, chat, and at events all over the country friends. I have a phone, and lots of SyTy peeps have my number. Call any time with questions, or just to shoot the shit.

Thanks for reading.

To be fair, I never really had any major problems with my Syclone. Aside from replacing the front propshaft, a window motor, and the pass side front axle, my Sy was solid!

I think where the problems come in is the inability to leave them alone... gotta make em faster, and the more mods you do, the more headaches come with it. That's the nature of these trucks. For me the downside is you can't just pop the hood and climb into the engine bay to work on them like an old hot rod. There's 10lbs of shit stuffed into a 5lb bag under the hood, and you can't even do something as simple as removing a valve cover without having to pull the truck apart. I used to have the patience for it when I was younger, now, I pop the hood look at it, say "f*ck this thing!", close the hood and go back inside . Maybe I'll get bit by the motivation bug once I tear into this thing, and have a better attitude about it.

Re: Ha! Man this forum is dead!

Well said, Dave.

I also think that old school "car guys" are a fading breed. Technology has come so far that you can get 300hp out of a RELIABLE 4-cylinder daily driver....and that's what "kids" are dreaming about vs. old school muscle.

I know WyoTech and others still exist, but try and find an 18 year-old who lusts after a SyTy (or even knows what it is). Very, very rare. They're out there, but not in numbers that can help re-populate a forum like this. And you're right...much more likely to pop into FB (or snap chat, on IG...where they can post selfies incessantly)

For the record, I have both East coast and West coast wiring

Yup! That's my Ty!

Hey Dave, I appreciate your posts! And really all of the "how to" posts. 90% of what I know about cars in general I learned from this site over the last 16 years. But, I'll be the first to admit, I still don't know jack shit about anything, and I'm sure MANY of my posts/questions have been more than annoying to the folks who do know what they're talking about. Whether its because they've been answered before, or simply because I'm more of a visual learner and reading how to do something just doesn't translate to me sometimes. After 16 years I'm still a n00b with a truck that doesn't run haha.
