I fix Cladding

Re: I fix Cladding

having done cladding repair for a few years i'm well aware of what a repair looks like..

while that piece was damaged badly it wasn't that difficult of a repair, especially by welding it back together.. unfortunately even the best material can/will break off of the tpo simply because of the different characteristics of the plastics.

you did a good job, but it does look like the bumper was repaired in the pics of course after a few coats of paint that might not be a problem.

trey if you ever want to talk shop, shoot me a PM..

you also need to keep in mind that 91/92/93 and 92 syclone cladding are made by different companies and thus have different materials mixed in.. difficult to explain but once you see/feel them you can tell the difference.

all i know is that fixing cladding by welding is NOT profitable, it takes ALOT of time to repair it properly and with full strength.

I agree. The "after" is pretty darn good considering the amount of damage in the "before". It may be detectable, I can't really tell in the crummy pics. But who cares? It's a bumper. It isn't going to stay perfect if he drives it. Especially near boat launch ramps.

Time will tell if the repair is "permanent" or begins to show signs of shrinkage, cracking, etc.

i'll admit it, if it passes your eyes then the repair is a good one.

i wonder if you would pickup a well repaired piece of cladding, i know i could by the discoloration but it is hard to see that on a truck..

Yes it does take a long time. This took me 2 full days. It's just something I'm offering to members here. Not trying to get rich off owners. Just trying to contribute what I can.

As far as bonding, the formula I have developed over the decades is very durable and is a permanet bond as it melts it's way into existing ABS & plastics. There are several cars in AZ with repairs like this that are 8 years old and see 150* temps for 5 months at a time. It holds up very well.

The "bondo" though, is another story. That does have a "shelf" life, and will eventually fail in 6-8 years. Nothing I can do about that though.

Thanks for the kind words.

Patent dude, patent!!! 3M, SEM ect pay big bucks for new technology and/or ideas.

With the other repair materials available, why go with bondo?

Re: I fix Cladding

Didn't use actual bondo, just referencing body fills in general.....used a plastic fill and a couple skim coats of dolphin featherweight.

Full of nice things to say aren't we... Damn... I at least give him credit for trying to fix it instead of just buying a $600 new one... Props to you sir for taking the initiative instead of sitting around bitching about it.

I was being nice, I could have been a real dick if I wanted to, and who the **** are you to tell me what opinions I should and shouldnt have? You already posted your :2cents: in the thread before me, if you dont like my opinion, too goddamn bad, deal with it.

Re: I fix Cladding

ok so my question is this, what would you charge someone to fix this? and after we figure in all shipping costs, what dollar amount all said and done back at the persons door? ( i don't need anything fixed just hypo....) looks good as well! i seen some warped bumpers in the past that looked repaired but was just warped etc.. and didnt look this good! :)
