I fix Cladding

Putting this thread up as an offer to all members, that I fix cladding and bumpers. Cracks, holes, rips, whatever. Even repair tabs so they are difficult to tell that it's been repaird. Been a body and paint man for nearly 20 years now. And plastic welding/reforming is a specialty of mine.

Just finished repairing my front bumper. Bumper was hit by a boat prop at a high rate of speed. Ripped right through and warped the bumper so that it was permanantly twisted.
Here are some before and after shots.

PM me if anyone wants repairs instead of buying new cladding

Re: I fix Cladding

After a custom plastic weld from behind and over the top, that I have invented over the years, it was ready for a few skim coats of fill.

Re: I fix Cladding

After some sanding a 2 more coats of feather fill, it was ready for primer.

Re: I fix Cladding

And voila!

This is done in matte black. But I will be clearing my bumper to match the painted cladding I already have. .....Thanks

Trey

PS. I couldn't get an angle without glare and reflection on the bumper. Will try and get some pics without glare later in the day...

Re: I fix Cladding

can still see where the damage was.

Full of nice things to say aren't we... Damn... I at least give him credit for trying to fix it instead of just buying a $600 new one... Props to you sir for taking the initiative instead of sitting around bitching about it.

Why pretend it isn't there? He said it very respectfully, if I were Treymen I'd be glad to hear constructive criticism to better myself. No sense sugar coating.

Welded from behind? How did you do that without removing the bumper cover? If you did, why not complete the repairs with the bumper off the truck? Primer, paint and all.

Also I don't see a bag over the vehicle to protect it from overspray. The paper is not enough with today's materials. Stuff carries everywhere.

The custom plastic weld, will you or do you have a patent on it?

No you can't see it guys. It was my shadow and the reflection of the trees behind me.

As far as overspray, I dont leave overspray. Low a.p. and other adjustments means VERY little over spray. Plus, I'm repainting the whole thing in a couple weeks.

No, no patent on the weld. Not worried about anyone figuring it out.

Didn't take bumper off because I had complete access to the area. When you take it off the vehicle, damage rate after the fact more than triples.

And no the prop was not running. Those are score contacts I did.

Any other complaints guys?

Would a patent be your ticket to "financial freedom"? I'm still looking for mine. These 20+ hour days need to stop!

how do you have complete access to the backside? I have yet to figure that one out and could use your help!

You should take better pics, to me it's strange that the exact area you repaired shows a ripple in the pics.

The big giant tear was VERY flexible and opened right up for me. Believe me, I thought I would have to take it off when I first saw it. Scuffed and dremeled score contacts. Applied weld and held in place.

Please remember guys, this is an EXTREME repair. Most body shops would insist on replacing this, because it would take too long. I spent 2 days straight on this. I'm not offering repairs that are this bad as the fee would not warrant it. Smaller pieces are much easier.

And dont judge a repair by cell phone camera pics guys.....Geez

Yes, the damage is still very apparent, unfortunately.

Wow. Very apparent. Really?

It looks pretty damn good considering the amount of damage and the degree to which the bumper was warped.

Nice work, Trey.

Re: I fix Cladding

Far as I'm concerned that's really nice. If I look at post 3 I don't see -any- remaining damage so it's just color after that. Short of being there looks like a hella job to me.

I agree. The "after" is pretty darn good considering the amount of damage in the "before". It may be detectable, I can't really tell in the crummy pics. But who cares? It's a bumper. It isn't going to stay perfect if he drives it. Especially near boat launch ramps.

Time will tell if the repair is "permanent" or begins to show signs of shrinkage, cracking, etc.
