Re: jhacking first real pass
between Bully, Robert, Hacking, Gerber and Callahan...it's shaping up to be a very interesting year.
You don’t need to count me in the "fight to be the top dog" class. I built my TT Ty to be a show truck that can be driven on the street and occasionally go to the track and have some fun. I have a personal goal of 8.90et and 150 mph and if time allows run it in Drag Week one of these years.
My goal with the AWD Ty was to be in the 10s with a full interior and have a very nice clean low mile truck to take to local shows and play around on the street. I achieved that goal a few years back and now am just upgrading some of the things that I always wanted to do such as a better bottom end (Oliver rods vs eagles), Brodix heads vs vortecs, a better turbo and cam setup, Alky injection, 4l80e trans and have a custom stereo back in. My current goal is to still have it a full interior Ty with a custom stereo in the 10s.
Both goals are my own and I work on them as I have time with no perceived notion or care what anyone else thinks I should run or do with them. I do enjoyed the support those on the BB have given me over the years on both of my Tys. Thanks to ya'll!!
With that said here is what I think of a thread like this.
1. Not everyone that owns a Sy or Ty is interested in trying to be the fastest. It is costly when parts break, the downtime is long. There is always someone that will eventually come along and beat your times anyway.
2. Some owners have total different goals with their trucks and different reasons to be on the syty BB. Some come here to say "hi" and give and take information from other members. Some live on the BB and everything that is posted takes on a deep meaningful life form to them. Other members are somewhere in the middle.
3. Some members that do not even own a Sy or Ty do speak out and push discussions that eventually cause heated arguments. It’s nice to know that people that do not even own our trucks have an interest in them. Hopefully some day there would be a Sy or Ty for every enthusiast.
4. We all like these trucks or we would drive or "race" something else. These are Syclones and Typhoons. Those that are offended that someone else has a modified truck (ei: V8, 2WD, different suspension, tweaked interior, AC delete, twin turbo, different trans or rear-end, etc,) needs to get an insecurity check. There was a time years ago that we had a BB made up mostly syty purists, but with the aging and cost of these trucks to maintain we have adopted a wide scale of modifications. If someone wants to be the fastest AWD bowtie block, aluminum headed, 4l80e trans, different rearend, street driven syclone (or typhoon) that is just great. Someone else wants to be the fasted bone stock block with L34 heads and e85 that’s great. Someone else wants to be the baddest V8 (with or without turbos) that’s great. Someone wants to convert these to 2WD, great, there is room for those also. If they were born Syclones and Typhoons they will always be Syclones and Typhoons. There are hundreds of thousands of modified, altered cars and trucks in the world and they all keep their namesake. If you have a pure stock unmolested Sy or Ty then be a proud purist and command the respect you deserve. The rest of modifiers have just what it is, a modified Sy or Ty.
5. To Robert (MrSyclone) in Sweden. You are truly respected for your achievements on a building and continuing to push the fastest AWD syclone in the world. You also have some incentive to keep it an AWD as you have a popular AWD class in Europe to run it in. We don’t have such a noted class here for AWD. If we want to be a “racer” first and happen to own a Syclone, (such as Jamie) then we have to adapt to fit into the class available. If Jamie owned a rocket and could adapt it for racing he would as he is a born racer. We all want to be racers with our trucks, Jamie is a professional racer and uses our trucks to race…big difference. It will be hard pressed to have anyone here in the states to run as fast as you, because in reality our racing bodies (nhra, ihra etc) don’t promote it. There is also the fact that at some point it makes sense to run 2WD for better sixty foots, less weight, less breakage and safety. Serious racers that spend the money to go fast in class racing will not be AWD.
6. Anders…you seem like a nice person and I have not met you in person, but let’s be real. Robert owns a very fine and the fastest AWD syclone on the planet. He, as owner deserves the respect for that. Other members will have the fastest 2WD syty’s, stock syty’s, V8 syty’s etc. We all live with those modifications within our community. Don’t feel bad that Robert doesn’t hold all those titles. Maybe you personally could do a sy or ty in some other configuration than Roberts and achieve a top spot in that type of modification. The 2Wd drive mod may be hard to capture though as there seems to be a few of them around. I think the fasted granddaddy of them all would be a fully built tube chassis with a 1,500-2,000 hp twin turbo V8. Someone some day will do it and it will still be call a syclone or typhoon.
Jamie, Robert, Mike, John, (and others that are going extra fast)…be safe and have fun. These are great trucks!
John
