LED Headlight experiment

"But, officer........."
I hate dim lights- and the stock Ty headlights are woefully inadequate.

I looked at installing HIDs, and became overwhelmed with all the choices, purported quality issues, and overall hype.

So, I found a possible solution; I installed some replacement H4 headlight housings, and am trying some LED bulbs. They are a plug and play install- no additional wiring to the battery.

Overall, I'm pretty satisfied with the result. Low beam light is fantastic- pure white and bright, without blue tint. High beam is about the same as the stock bulbs. Light dispersion is excellent, and I haven't been flashed as of yet.

Pics to follow later today....

Please weigh everything as you install and remove. Could be a good way to lose 2-3lbs off the front end of the truck and maybe gain some voltage too? I like the idea of this a lot.

Nice job n00b. ;)

I went with Hella Eurospec lights. No fuss, no muss and a much better dispersion pattern. They won't even be noticed during an inspection as long as they work.

Maxxima LED makes a nice 4x6.

Downside, its a poly carbonate which will yellow. They are Not cheap.

They look like clear/one bulbers with 6 LED lights.

I hate dim lights too.

:rotf: I don't even know what I have...sorry everyone!!

But they do have a 5 by 7 which is not as visually appealing

Re: LED Headlight experiment

Led lights don't disperse the light correctly like hid and halogen....I thought another member put LED lights in and said he couldn't see dick.....they looked cool he said but couldn't see down the road.....maybe he will chime in on this....:dunno:

I have led's in my Wrangler (KC brand Led's) and they work much better (LOT brighter) then halogen and have an almost perfect cut-off. It all depends on what you buy. The lights on my jeep are the same design as the ones in the link I posted above, so I expect the same results.

This is interesting. I like to see new ideas on these types of things plus there seems to not really be a solid HID conversion for our trucks that isn't ridiculously expensive. I would be up to try this at some point.

I just put LEDs in my 92 Sonoma dd, amazing bright and plug and play to the factory harness

The attraction of LEDs is theoretically that they wouldn't need a relay due to the lower power consumption so they could be plug and play. I didn't think LEDs were "ready" for headlight duty yet but LED tech is moving at a crazy pace. We'll see.

ddm tuning....h4/9003 kit 55w bulb with ballasts...no high/ low ...just low beam....both lights with shipping $50 ....I have the 9003 setup headlamp assembly already in my truck now.

LED's have been used on buses for over a year and a half, some properties have been using them for over 3 years.

Yeah I hear ya. They had LED A19 bulbs for the home 3 years ago too, but they were bright white and cost $30 a piece.

But now they're $7 at Walmart and look perfect.

Check out Jwspeaker.com, model 8900. Pretty sweet looking and they are a very good local company that make lights for all sorts of army and semi trucks. There are quite a few car builders putting these lights in builds these days. They are not cheap but you won't find anything better!

Re: LED Headlight experiment

A sub $100 eBay led kit in h4 housings is not yet safely attainable at the moment IMHO. TRS is working on an HID kit. Not sure if it will be a bolt in upgrade or not. I know some people aren't fans of the way HID projectors look on these body styles, but the output is worth it.
