Re: Memorial Meet - FAST / GAST

That was the best Fast Memorial day meet i could have imagined . Well just short of driving the viper . I had a blast and I still dont know how tyson got talked into working on everyones trucks but , congrats on a meet well planned . And on a side note , if you want to leave thonotosassa and go to tampa/clearwater , dont , I repeat dont , go East . LOL , After 30 mins of driving and seeing daytona signs, we knew what we did . I still dont think tyson found it as funny as I did though . See you all at the next meet .

And when is that going to be ?

Re: Memorial Meet - FAST / GAST

I had a good time yesterday and it was nice to see a few other trucks for a change.
Rob, thanks for the use of the house and shop, you have a real nice place there.
I learned my truck doesn't like 17lbs of boost on the way home,
I got to play with Tom on the way home and it didn't like WOT at speed.
Time for Alky.

Good turnout, 14 trucks total with the appearance of Warrens Mini Coop, Tom's Marlboro #6, and Jeremy Bottos black/silver stripped 99 Viper.

Thanks to the Pontiac Dealership for letting us hang out on the lot and throwing us the keys to a Solstice on the lot for everyone to take turns to go out and "test" drive it. (review on the Soltice to come, heh, heh)

Thanks to Rob and Mona for hosting the event at thier crib and letting us use their sweet garage setup, all the food, showers, AC, etc.

Thanks to Hooters for posting up the FAST Sticker and SyTy.net sticker on the grille for everyone to see.

Thanks to everyone who came out and helped out. Tyson and Warren...thanks for the help and extra hand on my truck...much much better now. Time to get the trans fixed.

Late night action for me, Ian, Jeremy/Jordan, John out on the Gandy. Went out to the streetraces and watched awhile and got into a few little skimishes. Further recap later on that...

Post up more and pics later...

Just left Mona and Robs with Ian and Rob starting to do the CBR brake kit and caliper upgrade on Ians truck. Hopefully all goes well and easy for them.... airtools and the lift definately are a plus... had the entire front end apart in about 15 minutes.

Keep us updated guys...

Just finished up and Ian is headed home - The Memorial Day FAST Meet is officially over!

Ian said his brakes felt great on the test run. I added a couple pics of him grinding the 'ears' off the spindle to the previous pictures posted here.

Re: Memorial Meet - FAST / GAST

Alright... so heres my review on the 2006 Pontiac Solstice.

Some background - FAST meet up at a local GMC/Pontiac Dealership where Greg had setup for us to hang out. Low and behold, a used Solstice was on the lot right next to us.

Used = Test drives

Sure enough, the guy at the dealer welcomed us and mentioned that we could drive the Solstice around. Both me and Ian were all gitty like school girls knowing the impending havoc that Tampa was about to see, we took it out for its maiden beatdown.....er, test drive.

Ian took the helm first and not any sooner did he get out of site of the dealer, was he throwing the shifter all over the place and swirling around the steering wheel like he was trying to put out a fire.

Thankfully, with the Solstice's small cockpit and decent side lumbar seats I didnt get my salad tossed.

Starting out with a few good side to side wheel jerks, it was apparent that the Solstice was pretty good at sticking to the road with a tight feel to the steering. Took some tight corners with little body roll and understeer.

From a 40mph cruise, Ian checks out the brake system and literally stands on the pedel. Smoke begins to plume up from underneath the rear tires and as we came to a stop, we were devoured by the smoke cloud and the smell of freshly burnt rubber. No ABS system. Somewhat of a bonus, but can get you in trouble quick if driving skills lack.

From a dead stop, you bring up the RPM and pop the clutch.... the car noses up and begins to break traction though 1st, 2nd and then makes a pathetic squeak in 3rd that we determined was the belt slipping on the pulleys. It accelarates decent.... definately not a "powerful" feel, but for 177hp, its makes good for a 15 sec car.

I soon jumped into the pilots seat and went off into a nice section of 2 lane straightaway. To get aquianted with the car, I decided to bring it up to around 40mph, apply some hard pressure on the brakes and yank the E-Brake out of the console. The car smoked the rears and glided straight for a moment until the rear end started to slide around. Let off the brake and E-brake and was able to correct the car with little trouble.

Lined up the car at the end of the road to take it for a full on 1/4 sprint. Brought up RPM and was slamming the clutch into the floor board while trying to break the shifter from its home in the console. Definately not neck braking, but it climbed up to around 90mph before I let out and came to a stop light, where I tested out the short distance stopping and once again smoked the rears on a lockup.

Drove around for a bit like a normal person on the way back to the dealer. The car stunk of burnt rubber.

Overall, a fun drive for a weekend vehicle. Steering was tight and the car was easy to throw around without fear of kicking out the back and spinning yourself off the road. Power was OK for what it was...but nothing to go out and drop the money on. Miata MX-5 probably would be a better buy. Lighter by 400lbs and more HP. Its also kinda hard not to look gay in the Solstice. Its just...small and kinda girly. You have to beat it down in order to make yourself look somewhat manly in it. Having the top down was nice, you could still talk at a normal level without having to yell. With the top up, im sure things get even tighter than they already are. Clostrophobics need not apply.

The side cup holders... WORTHLESS. They placed the one for the passenger right at the level of your knee. So as your moving around, you keep hitting it and it pops out onto your leg. Stupid design.

Manual door locks. When you have a small car, placing the door locks behind the persons head and having to reach over your own head to get out of the car is not a good thing.

Seatbelts. You aint putting it on unless the door is open. They are somewhat tucked behind the seats so in order to be able to grab it and put it on, you gotta have the door open... else you need to develop a 3rd joint in your arm.

Trunk. Made up entirely of gas tank. With the top up, you could fit a few small boxes and some rolled up posters. With the top down and in the truck, you can fit a few pieces of paper. If you plan to ride bitch, plan to hold the drivers belongings, cause thats the only place to put anything.

Turbo version should make things more interesting as far as drivability and power.

adam you have way to much time on your hands to write all that, and by the way im gonna make myself look dumb here but I figured out my vibration, lets just say the truck was asking for a little bit of tranny fluid, that would explain all the wetness under the truck when we were at robs house the gasket was loose.

Re: Memorial Meet - FAST / GAST

replace the pan while you're in there with something that has a drain plug. i'd also wipe off the oil filter adapter and see if that re-appears.

the oil filter area is clean and oil free it was def the tranny gasket leaking so I tightened it up for now, when I do a tranny service ill change the pan.

Re: Memorial Meet - FAST / GAST

If you decide to add a drain plug to your existing pan (and you will), I sell the B&M drain plug kit (80250) for $6.99. Nice thing about is that all you have to do is drill a 1/2" hole, screw it together, and off you go. Just happens to be the same thread pitch as the Autometer tranny temp sending unit, so just screw in the sender and you have a gauge/drain in one. Below is a pic:

Re: Memorial Meet - FAST / GAST

When I add a drain plug I prefer to buy a drain plug from an auto parts store, usually in 1/2-20 pitch. They run like $2, and have a nice wide head with a rubber gasket. Then I drill a 1/2 hole in the pan, and take a piece of scrap steel like 1/4" thick and drill and tap a hole in it for the plug. When I am done I weld it to the inside of the pan. It works great and looks factory installed.

I also just checked out all the pics. Damn I wish I couldve made it on Saturday.
It was nice to meet those of you who were there on Sunday, sorry I couldnt stay longer. Rob you've got a nice place, it was great that you offered the use of your shop. If you ever need anything I only live 19 miles from you, and that goes for anyone else too.
