OD Questions

I did a search and couldn't find much. I remember a post about OD awhile back. Was talking about how OD really shouldn't be used at WOT (not good for it)? Why is that? What are you suppose to do if you are going 120+mph? Also, what about freeway driving? Cruising at 60-70mph should it be left in D? I thought someone said that Hartman suggested not to drive in OD, but I could be wrong...Just some basic questions here, still trying to learn...Thanks list...

i don't use overdrive unless im going over 45-50 mph. i also always downshift at no lower than 40mph.

I don't think it would make sense to stay in D on the highway.. that's the whole reason for the OD gear to be there. Hartman says to keep it in D when driving around town. ESPECIALLY if you are going right around 35-45 where, if the truck were left in OD, you would be constantly upshifting/downshifting inbetween D and OD. So I leave it in D whenever I'm in town or at low speeds. If I forget to put it in OD when I get on the highway, the noise from the 3 grand revs is there to quickly remind me  Although I will say, boy does that bitch spool fast and take off like a rocket at that point!! (cruising at 3 grand in D)

heres a relative question...

when i get off the freeway, ill drop the shifter into D as im slowing down... is this bad for the tranny? my friend keeps yelling at me when i do that, saying im gonna burn the clutches... i just want an answer to shut him up once and for all.

When coming off the highway don't shift to D from OD to slow down. Wait for the tranny to downshift itself and then put the shifter in Drive to keep it out of OD while cruising the city streets. Manually downshifting automatic transmissions should be kept to a minimum.

I dont think your going to hurt it by downshifting it manually...and..yeah when you get over 50 and are going to stay above 50 then..you should let it shift into OD. Hell thats why its there..the reason for leaving it in D is because it gives you more line pressure and it keeps it from cycling between the gears at the 35-45 range

i dont drop it into D to use it as an engine brake. the tranny has already shifted into 3rd by the time i put it in D. i just do it early so i dont forget to do it later, and drive around in OD on the streets... but as long as nothing is gonna happen, then i can give my friend a healthy back hand across the face next time he says something hahahaha thanks guys!
