Project Crispy...

Rebuild number two has started on my Syclone. Five years ago I threw a rod in the truck. As with many projects the truck was mothballed for quite a while. After I finally had the truck back together and running I experienced a major setback. A major engine fire.
After getting on it to get around a car right before getting back to work I smelled the worst thing that you can. Raw Gas... I pulled into the parking lot and opened the hood. At that time the worst thing that could have happened did. The whole engine compartment exploded in flames.

The surveilance cam stinks so I made it into a gif. Shows what happened pretty well though...

This post will follow the rebuild as much as possible.

So project Crispy begins!

Removal of burned parts started this weekend... Just a small portion of what had to go...

Re: Project Crispy...

Right now I want to get it back together so I have been researching threads like the ones below:

Not positive that all of these will happen but now that I have to work on some of this stuff it is a great time to upgrade!

Winshield wiper relocation...

Heater core fix...
http://www.syty.net/forums/showthread.php?t=52079

Hydroboost...
http://www.syty.net/forums/showthread.php?t=44181

Engine bay wiring tuck...
http://www.syty.net/forums/showthread.php?t=39145

ECM wiring upgrades...
http://www.syty.net/forums/showthread.php?t=57813

Braided fuel lines...

I am also getting rid of the oil cooler and the remote filter assembly. Here is a nice post about it. I just hope it will be ok with a thicker propshaft...

Plus it is time to put some shiny stuff on and get rid of all of the unnecessary stuff!!!

Re: Project Crispy...

Did some more playing last night. I pulled the 60lb injectors and have them ready to go to to get cleaned and checked out. they look ok on the outside but I will know if they are ok after sending them to get cleaned and flowed. I have 4 spare injectors right now so I will be able to get a pretty good set when all is said and done. I will be changing out to a typhoon fuel rail and just adding the -an adaptors.

Do you need a ty fuel rail?

I have one already! I like the way that the feed line is farther back than the syclone one. It will help with the clean-up process. Although the soot is very hard to remove...

Re: Project Crispy...

There is another burned out Sy on here - who was it that had it in his back garden? Unlucky mate - makes me want to put a fire suppression system in mine...

That is such a crappy thing to happen. Did your insurance cover any of it? What is your estimate of cost/time to complete?

do you know what started this?

Yes. Broken bolt on the fuel rail... Look close and you can see the bulged o-ring on the injector. The bolt head was sitting on top of the lower intake.

Re: Project Crispy...

I have the recurring dream that my Sy catches fire, but I rebuild it all and get vanity plates that say "PHOENIX".

It'd be a great tag for yours, once it's done. Here's to rising from the ashes!

Re: Project Crispy...

Honestly if my Sy looked like that, I would be very tempted to just go out an buy another one.

Did you not have the injector clips installed?

No... I could not find them in the 5 year rebuild...

Re: Project Crispy...

I would guess the injector oring buldged was there from the start, although bolt broken didn't help the buldged o ring was the real reason.

Glad to see your going back.
