Solution for steering slop?

Retail price is about $46 if you want to pick them up locally. GMPD charges $27 + $13 S&H.

Mike,

My son and I just installed the steering shaft bearing/bushing and it was a piece of cake. Thank you for putting the GP together and we also installed the Jeep steering shaft from fivetodrive yesterday and installing both items really made a difference in the steering/handling.

Have A Nice Day,

Rick

Re: Solution for steering slop?

OK maybe I am missing something obvious here.

I have my steering shaft off and cant seem to budge the metal cage that covers the end of the column.
Does the old bushing and the black metal cage all come out as one unit, or does the black part come off first then the white part>?

Maybe its easier to get to with the wheel off and from the side but from the top i cant seem to get any leverage on it to pry the old one out.

What's the trick here?

Re: Solution for steering slop?

Just got done with this portion of my steering upgrade. Pulling out the old steering box and dropping the zq8 box in and then the steering shaft goes in. This is a easy quick upgrade. Very easy to do.

Re: Solution for steering slop?

Whats the easiest way to replace this bearing? Does it require dropping the steering column? I might just have to attack it at work next week.

Its fairly simple. The bearings snaps in to the plastic housing. Then, you undo the upper steering shaft, slide it down, remove the clip for the old bushing, install new bushing and put it all back together.

Truckless. For now.

Hey Mike,

any idea if this carried over into the 2nd gens? We've got a ton of slop in our Jimmy and I'm hoping it's not steering box on the way out. Though, it does have 143,000 on it.

That is a question I can not answer my friend. I have no idea. Sorry. My guess would be no though. But the later years should still use this type of bearing I imagine so I am thinking you can do the same but would a different part number.

Great job Mike! Even with all the new parts on my Sy it still has a tendency to 'snap' to the next lane if there is a rut/groove/etc. This may just solve that... I'll check mine out tomorrow. ..not sure how I missed this thread originally.

I dont think this will solve that. What wheels and tires do you have on the front? I had your same issue and it went away when I ditched the 275/40/17 up front and went with the 245/40/17. I'd say it was about 90%eliminated. Need a narrower tire.

Re: Solution for steering slop?

I went to the parts house at reliable chevrolet a bit ago and picked one of those bearings up for $40.02 out the door. I have a ton of slop in the steering and can feel the steering rod jiggle when I shake it near that bearing. I do have 275/40-17's up front and wonder if thats parts of it. I know the truck has new ball joints, control arm bushings and the jeep steering rod so there isnt too much else that could cause it. I will post after I install the bearing to see if it made much difference.

Re: Solution for steering slop?

I can see the tires causing the truck to pull but what I really want to go away is the wheel being able to jiggle back and forth without even moving the wheels.

Re: Solution for steering slop?

Update to an old thread. I just installed these on my truck. Havent drove it yet but there was no doubt that my old bushing was shot.

Reason for the update, Jason Pickett found me the parts. The GM part numbers no longer have the dashes (at least on the bags) so they are as follows.

7805822 - Adapter

7805700 - Bearing

Re: Solution for steering slop?

I've replaced everything but the steering bushing stated above and my ball joints (I have new ones but mine are still fine) and I still have quite a bit of steering slop. It seems I still have quite a bit considering I have a brand new ZQ8 box that I just installed. How much movement are you guys experiencing before you change out this bearing?

This will be the fix. It's like night and day.

Re: Solution for steering slop?

I'd say I have about 4"-5" of movent in the steering wheel still. I have a jeep steering shaft too. Before I dump money into this thing some more, I want to make sure it's going to help.
