Trans Removal

I am pulling my trans. I have never worked on a auto.

Does everything come out as 1? or Do I remove the transfer case first?

Is anything going to be pouring out ? Do I have to worry about major leaks anywhere.

I need insight on rear driveshaft removal. I thought it would pull right out. I removed 2 half moon retainers and thats it. Manual I have says to refer to section 4A in 1992 sonoma/jimmy manual.. My book does not cover it.

Is it required to remove the linkage in the truck at shifter. Working under the truck with grease and oil I am hesitant to even jump in the and do anything.

There are 2 coolant lines that run to the front cooler What is the easiest way to get them out. I have special line wrenches to get the job done and its not the case. Any pointers for that?

Also I can not figure out what is behind the coolant lines some type of cable I removed 1 10mm bolt and there was ATF guzzling out.

Just looking for some pointers . This is all new to me and old to the world.

Re: Trans Removal

yeah man that job isn't fun to do on jackstands. yes remove the Tcase, when you pop the tcase you may get some fluid- also if you tip the tcase at too much of an angle it will leak out

you take the linkage off on the side of the transmission

for the drive shaft just pry it out of the rear- twords the transfer case then pull it out of the transfer case when its loose.

as for the cooler lines- its transmission fluid in them- just break them loose and unscrew them- fluid will comes out for a few seconds usualy

Don't do shit unless it is 100% safe.

IMO best bet is to put it on ramps with jack stands.

Do not ever get under that ****er with just a floor jack. EVER.

Re: Trans Removal

A good way to lower the trans down safely if you are doing this job alone is to use motorcycle straps (non racheting) above the frame rails. I put one across the front and one in the rear and let them loose a few inches at a time. Of course, I have done this so many times that I can handle it on the jack alone and even put it back in on the the jack alone but for virgins I definitely say use the straps.

And of course, make sure your jack stands are secure, since I survived my Ty falling on top of me with crush shoulder collar bones and one hell of a collar bruise I always push the shit out of my truck before I get under it to make sure it isn't going anywhere.

Another good tool to have is a harbor freight $65 trans scissor lift! Makes it fairly easy! Just take your time with alot of breaks! Always be safe and securely get truck off the ground!

I have done half a dozen or so syty transmissions in my time and I use four jack stands and two floor jacks. One time, I got to do one on a lift with the author of that "how to" above in MI... I'm not going to lie, it's a BITCH to do the first time. But it gets easier after about the 3rd or 4th one. You can do it if you are SAFE and take your time. My first pull took two days to do using the same write up above. The last time I did a syty trans, it took about 2 hours by myself. Make no mistake about it, this is how you earn your syty "stripes". However if you don't have the tools, patience or know how, take it to someone else.

Re: Trans Removal

I've worked at an r&r trans shop ... If you have all the proper tools jacks stAnds or hoist it makes all the difference in the world, all I can say is swivel impact sockets and 36-42 inch impact extensions and a trans jack and that is as easy as pie. I bet ya on jack stands with impacts and air tools I could do one in an 1hr-2hrs, I was the master on 46re's in Chrysler products and 4l60 and 80's in gm's. I learned from the best though dude knew all the tricks of every car just about.

Re: Trans Removal

Here's a few of my :2cents: on transmission R/R's. one and two. SAFETY can't be stressed enough. Member "myclone" in that second link was killed over six years ago when his dually slipped off a floor jack, killing him instantly. His wife came home and found him in the garage :(. In an instant, syty.net lost one of it's most well known and contributing members and I lost a dear friend. R.I.P. :myclone:.

Remove the motor first. Makes things much easier... JK :) Safety cannot be over-stressed. These things will try your patience but as a mechanic who took care of his own big trucks many years ago anything can be done if you put your mind to it. I never met myclone but he is sorely missed.

It would be a royal pain in the ass to remove the motor first. Why? I have removed my transmission just fine with motor in truck.

Re: Trans Removal

I know I have said this before, but if there is any way to beg, borrow, or steal a lift and a trans jack, it makes it about 10 times easier. You will need a three foot or so extension, with a wobble joint. Find someone who has a lift, and make friends with them. That is what I did to pull the trans in another vehicle before I got my own lift. Having a dead man to support the trans while you pull/reinstall the transfer case is even better. Just been there, done that. We reinstalled my trans and transfer case ready to go in about 1 1/2 hours (me and two guys who knew what they were doing helping).
