Ty 0073 Bowtie Build

Re: Ty 0073 Bowtie Build

Been plugging away on this little bits at a time. Right now my biggest issue is making mounts for the efan and radiator. Well within my capability and even time allowed but for some reason I just can't seem to find the motivation to just get out there and do it. Anyway, front is on and truck is on the ground.

This thing is really starting to take shape. Going to be fun doing the dry sump oil pump eventually and the tensioner.

I modified my stock shroud to work with my electric fan setup. Here is a decent shot of the setup. I used a small strip of aluminum riveted to the plastic to give it some strength. It has worked out very well.

That wont work for my radiator. I already had stuff like that when my radiator was stock but since my new radiator is 1/4" taller than the core support and has no protruding seam around the tank what you are suggesting just wont work. Plus, I can't utilize the factory bolt hols that hold the stock stuff together since the bolts would pierce or dent the radiator.

The plan as of now is to fab something out of stainless sheet or have some aluminum brackets welded to the side of the radiator that will bolt to the core support to "float".

Got the Ty to my shop where I have all my fab tools and much more room. Sucks when a 4 car garage is too small:lol: I have a few brackets to make; radiator, efan, oi catch can, oil filter housing, possibly a new meth reservoir bracket. Here is what I have so far.

Kind of funny seeing the TY next to the Biscuit. It is truly a big car and a small truck I guess.

Looks like I got all the fab work done. Nothing short of a pain to say the least. I should only have to tear it all down one more time and that will be to run some wiring and get some stuff painted or powder coated. I built the radiator/fan mount, the oil filter mount and the oil catch can reservoir. I think I am definitely going to make a shorter run from the oil filter to the block feed.

Next up should be wiring.

Wow, I can't believe how lazy I am. For a year I have been avoiding installing my wastegate because I couldn't think of a good place to put it and didn't feel like doing the fab work honestly.

So here it is. 2 hours of work, good thing I waited a year.

What really kills me is that have been absolutely dreading doing the belt tensioner. Why? NO IDEA! That took my all of 45 mintues including the drive to ACE to get a bolt.

Here that is.

Re: Ty 0073 Bowtie Build

I pulled the motor back out to re do the oiling process. After talking to some people in as much depth as possible, it was deemed that wet sumping this engine and feeding it to the front of the motor was a bad idea. So I had to perform some surgery. I don't know if all Bowtie block have this side port above where the oil filter attaches but mine did and it was plugged off. So I took it all apart and basically plugged the old filter nipple hole. Then tapped the side access hole which again, may have been drilled out or maybe just comes with the Bowtie block. So now I have it coming out of the block where it normally would have fed the oil filter, going to a remote filter and then back to the passage that feeds the bottom end first.

Not sure if this makes sense but basically whoever had this block in the past pretty much ruined it by drilling out the factory filter feed port and stuffing an AN fitting in there. So this is what I am left to deal with. I guess in the end it's not the end of the world but I do feel far more comfortable starting this thing after performing the surgery. As of now it is all back together and I am working on wiring and hoping to fire it up in a month or two.

Oh yeah, I also swapped the oil pump RPM sent me for an HV. I was going to run the Big Block pump but the amount of work it would have taken to fit would have been nuts.

Re: Ty 0073 Bowtie Build

As I was going through my Ty TO DO list, I came across alky set up. I put 2 hours for that. So about 10 hours later and $500 I am finally almost done with it. I made this out of Stainless so it has eaten up a lot of drill bits and the bends were kind of difficult. The other issue I ran in to is that when buying new nozzles I decided to upgrade pumps and it turns out I now need 2 nozzles. So I had to have my TB inlet pipe get 2 bungs installed. Along with that, it appears my radiator cap isn't clearing the hood. I should have bought Paul's when I had the chance. I am pretty sure that I will eventually need to go to a smaller radiator but it will work for now. I folded the bottom piece that protects the cooling fins and bottom row in and gain 3/4" clearance.

Then I realized my new 2.5 gallon wont clear the hood either. So, I dug in 2" to the wheel house. I really hope I don't regret that move. I do have coil overs and did this on Abe's Ty years ago and it had no issues so I am hoping I wont. So I cut in, welded a nice pedestal and bracket. Then mounted the new pump and solenoid.

I'll probably go ahead and clean up all of the sharp edges tomorrow and finalize the install. Also should be able to finalize IC piping along with bumper install. Unfortunately this has displaced my MSD box. I am sure I can find a spot on the passenger side.

Also got in a new Ostrich and tuning materials. I am getting close to be done with wiring. I am hoping to move on to my next TO DO's next week.

It's getting smaller!!

A little doom and gloom.

Went to start tuning idle and smelled coolant pretty bad. Got out and look and saw it dripping from #5 exh port between the header. Pulled the header off and pressurized the coolant system and found this

Typhoon bowtie head crack - YouTube

So now I have to look at this for a while

I bought these heads from 2fatguys. I was told they were in great shape. I had to spend 2k to get them where they are now and who knows what this is going to cost. I am not sure who to be pissed at, if 2fatguys said they were ready to roll and they weren't but then I have the machine who fixed them and they clearly missed this. Or maybe just myself for being dumb enough to spend 5k total on a set of ****ed up bowtie heads.

That's a bummer, look like they've been welded on before. Hopefully it's an easy fix. Definitely have them pressure tested after they get fixed

I got the head back on along with the intake and plenum and fuel rails. I may have this fired back up tonight, we'll see how it goes.

It's been 3 looong months. I can't believe how fast time flies. I ended up buying a new pair of 883's from Realfastv6. So far so good although I have only put about 10 minutes of run time and driven a total of 40'. I ended up with some rack and pinion and hydroboost issues but just got those fixed up today. I am hoping to drive the truck to the exhaust shop tomorrow and have them install some hangers then maybe if I am lucky, drive it home and start tuning.

Holy hell, this thing is kicking my ass here. My exhaust guy wont work on cat less cars anymore. So I put it up on the lift and did it myself. I installed a 4" chrome tip and screwed that up pretty good, it looks like a chrome dick hanging off the back of my truck

Anyway, I got in today and had hoped to drive it to the car wash but, one of my guys at the shop were saying they saw sparks coming from under the truck. When the truck is running I can hear a loud screeching sound, metal to metal no doubt. I put back up on the lift and checked it out. Definitely the flex plate rubbing the starter gear at tip in.

I went ahead and shimmed the starter. Then I left and came back about an hour later and smelled fuel really bad. I looked under and saw it all over the passenger side so I put it back down and primed the pump. Found one of the AN fitting joints leaking. Replaced that. The I get the truck off the lift and fire it up. I drove it around the complex and it seemed OK, needs severe tuning of course. I got it back in and was going to make a short drive to Autozone to get some lug nuts. Wouldn't you know the starter starts making this horrible grinding sound so I put it BACK UP!! I had to remove a few shims. Got it off and drove it to AZ. It went OK. The engine is very shaky, truck is super laggy, turbo makes no noise. I am not going to get too critical until I get some tuning time in but so far, it's ROUGH. Got it to idle on its own though so that's good.

I'll report back soon!
