Typhoon Project

Here is a Black Typhoon I have showed interest in. This truck I found over a year ago and the owner just did a david blaine on me. It was like I wanted to buy it.. and venture out to look truck over and he just vanished. I eventually got to scope the truck out and visually look it over so I know what I am some what up against.

The owner told me the transfer case is wiped out.. I initially thought it was due to beating on it, attempting AWD burnouts or at the least, trying to light them up and do dounuts. (gets visual in mind of the Garnet Ty and the famous video) He just told me a while ago that the prop shaft is removed.. Really did not put TOO much thought into it.. It seems like a very simple fix.. Just replace the T case. (which I have a back up typhoon one I tried to sell many times thinking I would never use it).

Recently I was reading a thread in regards to some tires/wheels/rims and correct sizing/spacing/offset.. And it dawned on me that Could the wheels currently on the truck cooked the T-case? I tried to describe them to a member here but I think I picture is worth 1000 words.

Thanks-

Re: Typhoon Project

That picture is worth about 500 words... :D Can't see the wheels that well. Is the back glass smashed?
If they are the same size tyres and wheels, not the issue. You can't tell what differences there are front to back.

Did you just find the truck again? Are you still going to pursue it? What was the price initially?

How much more cladding damage is there?

What was your plan with the project?

Re: Typhoon Project

 Pic is uploaded from phone.. Never works..

The tires are the same Front/back Offsets are off as the rears are Tucked into wheel wells.

I did not know where it was, I knew the general area. For some reason the owner was skeptical about me or something and was very hesitant to meet. Probably becasue the truck was not running right.. or would not make it out. There were times where I offered to go out to his location, offered to meet up some where or half way. I even offered to show my truck or have him come to my place with truck and check out my vehicles on same note..

I am still interested. My idea on the truck is to put it back together in the stock configuration. It is currently stock truck but needs to be gone over. At first glance it needs cosmetics. I have plenty of truck parts piled up to bring this truck back to life. After having the option to Buy it outright, or swap a car for it I have kept him informed on our deal. I am ready to unload a car if he wants it, Or I will buy it out right. Does not matter to me.

It is a project. That needs attention. The truck is all there. Front claddings he has for the wheel arch. They are cracked. I can come up with good ones if need be. Cladding in the rears are a bit cracked but it needs to be gone through. The paint is original. would probably need a re-spray. I think it is a great project for me to get into.

Re: Typhoon Project

Aren't those wheels 98-02 Camaro? They have the same offset front and rear, so the rear axle would need 2" spacer/adapters to bring them out. If the same tires, the diameter is the same, so it shouldn't cook the t-case.:2cents:
Sounds like the guy isn't that interested in selling., or he's trying to bandaid it together to get more money for it. Neat project though.

Re: Typhoon Project

They are some type of camaro wheel. I thought they were the 1993 new style?.

I am going to eliminate that being the cause of the transfer case to be blown. I just had thought it could have been the issue as I read more and more about other wheel options and the down sides of them.

Pretty sure he wants out. The truck is too much for him. When he told me the transfer case issue I offered the case I have as a spare to him like 9 times. each time he must not of understood that I had what the truck needs and was not going to be asking a bunch of money. When I bought my syclone, the owner had "big plans" like all of us and he had a "heavy duty" transfer case with a bunch of stuff. I know what I would need to run it in my syclone.. but Its been dry stored and like I said I tried to push it off to a few here on the site, and ultimately I am just keeping it. I figured if the case being cooked was holding him up from enjoying the truck than I can help him. Why not?

He just is not set up for work, Probably does not know too much about the truck. It was a nice novelty having the boost, and turbo noises but I guess when things break the novelty wears off.

Re: Typhoon Project

Last night my phone rang, was the owner of the truck. It was almost like some one had woke from the dead..

Funny because I almost gave up on him and this whole thing. Called me last night and said I can come pick the truck up in 2-3 weeks.

Re: Typhoon Project

That garnet typhoon is still kicking and running like a champ though! :) Just put 6k miles on it in the last 5 months!

On another note, those are camaro 16" wheels, I would be willing to bet the tires are the same size and didn't cook the transfer case.

Re: Typhoon Project

Glad the typhoon is treating you well, and you are doing the same to it.

The wheels I was wondering if it could play a role in the mismatch sizing or different wheels. It was a noob question. Glad I brought it up because I just thought it was the reason why they could burn up quick. It was probably pure neglect that destroyed it. Awd burnouts? Some type of serious condition.. Lol

Re: Typhoon Project

Wow, that is the most protracted "I bought a truck" thread ever! Congrats, now let's see what the truck is like?

Nice persistence!

Re: Typhoon Project

I would bet that the transfer case burned up because no one ever changed the fluid and the fact that the front prop shaft is not installed. A lack of front prop shaft will hurt the Transfer Case.

Re: Typhoon Project

I heard that that's not even possible. People 2wd dyno there trucks all the time. All the time.

Its from mismatched wheels..being neglegent not knowing a whole lot about the trucks etc, etc

Re: Typhoon Project

I am going to be removing a bunch of aftermarket parts and putting stock parts on I have collect for past 2 years since I saw truck. I made a mental note of what I would need wayy back and kept on the owner like a fly on shit. I have a shop full of original parts/take offs to throw at the truck.I also was provided a bunch of front end parts and axles, driveshafts.. I'll use what I need..

There is a mega-ton of noise from valve train. Was told its the comp lifters and it goes away at high rpm? I have comp 975's in my syclone and it does not klack like a diesel. I suspect a bent push rod, or some one had no clue how to adjust the rockers and wiped the cam lobes out to nothing. I have a spare typhoon block which I plan to put in but I would like it to be specd out and gone through. A very basic bottom end I am not looking to modify the hell out of this truck like I did to my syclone.

It has stuff like bigger injectors, air intake box, gauges, battery relocated all stuff at quick glance I can see which I am going to be pulling off

Couple better pictures for everyone

Worst area of rusting is around front fenders, the rest " should buff out"
