Typhoon Project

Re: Typhoon Project

Quick Update, Dropped the transfer case and replaced it with a new back up one I had in storage. I cleaned up the threads on my awd adapter/trans mount. Turned out things were not as bad as I thought. Started to mock up my 3 inch muffler. did some brake work when I was there doing new rear cylinders and draining any old fluid. And lastly was able to break down the top intake and remove the injectors and work on the fuel rail in prep for the stock set of injectors soon to arrive. Another board member hooked me up with a stock chip so... once I get the injectors (stock) I can plug them in.. see how the truck responds with the ATR chip and if anything still is not right I have the stock chip to plug in and see if that works. Plan is to use the stock chip. But I would like to know if the truck responds to the injectors as I think the truck had the wrong 40# which I just removed. Ordered some more stuff for it so things should pick up by the weekend.

Re: Typhoon Project

Nothing went as planned yesterday when i went to work on the truck as usual. Got the injectors and they were bunked up. I had to jump off that task and move to another. Purchased a brand new vac kit from sportmachines. I removed the rubber home made stuff. Pieced together. Probably leaked all over. I found 1 end open connected to nothing. SM kit is a lot better as far as locations and looks.

Decided since I can't button up the engine just yet I'd hit the upper plenum with a little bead blasting. I Gave up and just used some high strength air craft stripper. Let it do the work for me while I had other things to do.

I been coating my engine bay parts with a real nice wrinkle finish coating. I worked on the plenum until the wee hours of the morning. Story behind the wrinkle finish, another board member did it.. And I liked it so much I put my twist on it.

Re: Typhoon Project

Got the truck going yesterday a little late. Was able to get injector ends caps locally and I purchased a bunch...? Seems like a typical move these days.

Upon swapping out the 40# injectors for the original 30# truck idle was way smooth and truck did not smell like un burnt fuel. I did notice a little blueish smoke coming out the exhaust.hoping after a few good heat cycles it burns any thing that could be built up off.

I let idle for about 20-25minutes and jumped ALDL. Just flashed like 4 times. Looked like 4 steady blinks. Could of been 5. Its not showing code 12 anymore.

Maybe today I can actually I take it for a spin around.

Re: Typhoon Project

Went ahead yesterday and tested stuff again i was not testing aldl port correctly. I ended up having the vehicle on. So seems like what ever the issue had been was my fault for not testing with Key on engine off.

I did perform brake work, which was new rear cylinders, bleeding lines and pads. All the sudden my brake light is on. I looked it over in my manual and it just says when the brake is set, the light will light...? How do I get the bulb to go off? Do I need to bleed out the abs or is there a procedure for working on brakes ? Any help would be good.

The truck also has a slight hesitation and if I pull forward from a stop it bogs a little bit. Eventually picks up and hits boost. Just has some hesitation from the start. It pulled to a solid 10-12psi just looking real quick. Was not trying to push it too hard. Still has a few squeaks I got to figure out. Keep in mind its just me working on the truck. I don't know everything. My blue supplement keeps me on the cuff of things. Been chiseling away at it pretty good though!!

Re: Typhoon Project

Worked on replacing the front support with a good alum. one. Getting rid of all the twisted metal. Just mocked it up for now Was a lot of work drilling out the fog lamp hardware They all just rust out and seize up I replaced all of it with 316SS stuff. You can see the start of it all on the pass. side some stainless hardware on the fog area..

mocked up the fiberglass arch piece while i have the front all apart. it fits OK, it appears to need some sanding/shaving at the lower fender portion. The transition is just not that great. I didnt mind at first. untill some one said something.

Also worked the seats/wheel/door panels for a little. Yeah the seats are not perfect. There are some wrinkles and a burn in the one. I took the extra step to clean and treat, hopefully it does something in the long run. You can see the BOLSTERS how they are dirty, one thing I really cant stand. Next I will try to get something to lift that dirt off. Honestly I think the kid used the truck for a kennel. Dog hair is like every where and its like SHEEP hair...and it just had this WET DOG smell to it. I am taking car of all the shit I dont like to see or smell.

Re: Typhoon Project

Couple plug wires I found this morning. Replaced the one already with the GOOP looking stuff on it. It was a temporary quick fix until I was able to get to my surplus box. I already replaced plug #1 when I first got the truck it was cooked. I think the gooped up one is #3 which I just put a new one on. Did all of them. I had 2 boxes of wires and a spare motor and I just ripped the cap off the motor sitting and pulled wires one by one. Plug wires # 2 and #4 were the other two wires which were directly laying on the down pipe. They were ran the wrong way and just getting grilled. Its nice to have at least 1 or 2 of every part of these trucks in storage. Thats why I just pulled the cap off the original 93 typhoon engine I have everything is still "original" even these wires.

Re: Typhoon Project

Worked on doing a new serpentine belt today. The belt was snapped when I looked at the truck ( a few years ago?). Alternator bracket was snapped off too. I actually pulled the belt off my 120K mile 93 typhoon engine I bought as a complete spare as well as the alternator bracket. The bracket was GOOD, belt I held on to as a temporary part or a Just in case.... Decided that the belt I was skating on thin ice with was time to replace. I put about 1000 miles on it and it started to squeal under load. Belt was also super sticky like it was really heating up. This is a better belt I have had good results in the supercharged world, so I finally found one and using it for this truck this time around.

Re: Typhoon Project

Started a cladding repair project. For those who are curious in which product to use, whats best.. so on.. I decided to share what I used. I had 2 options at the counter 3M or the Norton stuff I chose. 3M is probably the better item to go with but I decided to take the gamble and use the cheaper stuff. The difference was the price in the Aerosol can. 3M can was $35, where the norton was $10. the special dual part mixing tube was the same price. I think I payed 35 for the tube, it retails $55-60. The bigger issue is the actual application GUN. They cost can cost up to $80-100? I was lucky enough that I found mine at a old job. This was the piece that "was on the truck when I looked at it" but when I brought it home didnt notice it was gone. After about a month I called the previous owner and asked him about it. He had it. Lucky me I had the tabs still on the truck. ( like i said before the part looked kicked off) I am glad I got the piece from him because it is a matching color part. I have a few other corner parts and didnt want to go forward with them because of painting and trying to figure out how to match the sun faded argent. Thats why I decided to just wait it out. I also have the 2 original matching front wheel arches coming my way as well which is another plus on the color scale! Little by little the truck will look less and less like something out of mad max.

Re: Typhoon Project

Yesterday I decided to pull a good cover I had stored and start the wet sanding process. The cover was gloss black and I stepped it from 600 grit to 800. I ended up blasting it in with some Argent Silver paint but it appears to be Very silver.. and not Argent. This is basically just a temporary paint job as I am testing a few things out. You can see what I am working with...the front cover ..

And as the temps just dropped to around 90* outside ( from like 110* ) I was able to tolerate a little bit..(not much) and get the corner piece on I fixed last night/today. so far everything with the truck has been pretty good. A/C is blowing cold too now. :rotf:

Truck is looking more "complete" which is great.. definitely worth wating for.

Re: Typhoon Project

Quick Little update, I spent last weekend putting the front cover on that I sanded and re-painted. The paint says Argent Silver but I dont think its a GM match. I will just go get the real stuff ( Base coat clear coat). Like I said it was a temporary thing. The old bumper had some stress cracks as shown in previous pictures. I had the better condition cover in storage.

Same type pain in the ass job as the oil dip stick tube, Figuring out how to remove the existing rivits that are poped/expaneded/mushroomed in the Rear quarter panel that corner cladding mounts to.

Also, Got word finally on the front arches I was owed. So that all came to fruition. Looked at another house right up by where I scooped the truck from and was able to set up a pick up. Went ahead and made a few repairs. Reinforced all the tabs on the driver side part. Need to get very creative with the passenger side.

lastly I was able to put the shocks on in 100+ degree temps. What a smooth move. Got rid of all that beat stuff. Truck feels noticeable difference.

Also might switch out my wheels/tires for the drag radials I have that are sitting. Run them the rest of the summer I am thinking. put a good heat cycle on them

Re: Typhoon Project

Ordered a set of LED head lamps. Put them in today and just drove home with them on. All I can say is WOW. I was looking for a big difference and got it.

They are Truck-Lite 5x7 (27450C) if anyone is curious. I saw a board member installed them on his truck and I actually decided I liked the look before I even saw the results of how the light performed. I like the Black out look up front, as well as the bright ass light that is emits from it .

The lights are very impressive for only having 1 bulb for low and 1 bulb for high.

Re: Typhoon Project

Doing a great job! Ty looks very nice....

 Thanks, It all comes in time..

Decided to do the rear shock before I never get around to it. The truck is a 1992. It does have the ELD or self level system. Fuse has been unplugged since I bought the truck. Though it does work I did not go with any air shocks. I just went with the regular Bilstien shock to match the front ones I bought as well. I decided to go ahead with the shocks because it seemed like there was a loss of power. Either through the shocks or the drive shaft. I mentioned something about the U joints and all before and had suspected something up with the shaft possibly binding up. Either way I sourced a nice low mile stock typhoon drive shaft to put in, I cleaned it up and painted it and will install that too hoping that all the strange feelings go away. I did take my bro for a ride last night and he did say it feels way better with the new rear shocks.

Re: Typhoon Project

Well here we go.:banghead: ( hahaha) I officially think 4th gear went out on me just a little bit ago. Riding home screaming up to 3000 rpm. I heard a funny little noise/feeling and it would climb to 4000 rpm and not really propel me forward or put me in the seat. Seems like it " grabs" which don't seem good. Like wind's out than I feel some tq applied and it will "grab" probably not supposed to be shifty like that.

Back to work. And not to my job. Back to twisting wrenches on the typhoon.

On aside note, I picked up ANOTHER typhoon transmission YESTERDAY but didn't think mine would LET LOOSE SO SOON!!!! But yea its all good, and all fun.

Re: Typhoon Project

Looking at picture, hard to tell its December 15 how green the grass is. Dug out and loaded my spare transmission in the typhoon today.

Few things I looked for when purchasing transmission .Proper code

These two grooves,

Matching codes on exterior of case

The trans was a low mile pull out I was able to score off a local board member who ended up buying it off another local board member ( we all know each other )

All I have to do is get the converter either serviced or just buy a new one. Seems like a better idea to try and utilize my stock syclone conveter which is already out I called for a quote on a cleaning and they say around $100 to open inspect clean and replace any worn internals. Asked about additional stall ( was recomemded bumping the stall up to 2400 RPM on the stock turbo ) and making them adjustments would put me at around $200.

Looks good. How do you like the light output? Does it blind oncoming drivers?
