Re: Wrecksurrection

Actually did a little work tonight. I took off the door and rocker cladding. I couldn't believe the nasty dirt that came from the rocker cladding

Also removed the escutcheons. After pulling them off, I decided I want to do the flush mount 90's full size handles. I think it will look much better. A good friend of mine is going to help out on that. I hope to go get them in the junk yard next weekend.

I am thinking I should have all of the cladding removed tomorrow or Tuesday. I have a lot of work to catch up on so my time will be somewhat limited.

Re: Wrecksurrection

Got all the cladding off a couple weeks ago and all I have to say is, this truck looks pathetic with out it. I can't believe how ugly this thing is right now.

I also started sanding and I really have no idea what I am doing so I had a friend of mine who owns a body shop come by this morning and give me a crash course. He also brought me a few different things to use, like different course discs for the DA. As you can see, I kind of goofed this part a little.

This part looks a lot better. I didn't realize the DA was on "grinder" mode since I have never really used one before. He set me straight there and the door is looking much better than the quarter panel.

He told me to go ahead and get the sides going and he will come by every other morning or after work and see how I am doing and get me going the right direction. This is going to suck, I have a feeling, cause it already does I guess.

D/A's are brutal in the hands of an amateur. Especially on curved surfaces. They remove a lot of material quickly, and it's pretty easy to "make a mess" that requires a ton of work and time to 'fix'.

I completely agree.. TYTILIDIE it looks like you are sanding down to the bare metal everywhere that you had a nick or imperfection then trying to blend this back into the existing paint. This will not work. Especially on a black truck. You either need to strip the entire thing to the bare metal or simply clean the existing paint, scuff it up, then fill the imperfections using a high build filler primer or some thinly mixed body filler. All of those spots that you ground down to the metal already need to be filled back out to the same height of the existing paint.

Re: Wrecksurrection

Wow, thanks for all of the advice guys. I tried the DA in the actual DA mode. This mistake cost me a lot. After I tried it on my ruined tailgate, I tried it on the other door. What a difference. Now this side looks like it was simply sanded.

So now I am not sure what to do, should I take the other side down to the metal or fill the spots where the metal is showing?

I bought a sander today like Renz posted and got some blocks like Dave posted and will try it all out. My buddy is coming over this afternoon and I guess we will spend a few hours on it.

Re: Wrecksurrection

OK, Started working in this piece of shit again. I got the core modded up for the FMIC. This time I decided to take less metal out and just do it over all more simple. Here is where I took some angle metal with pre-drilled holes and bolted it to the front of the core for the IC to sit in

I used some studs in the bottom of the IC to slide in to the bracket

Here it is sitting in place

I drilled a hole in the top of the core going straight down and welded a tube in it so that I can unbolt it from the top and simply slide the IC out

Here it is in place

I drilled holes on the bottom side for the rubber bushings for the later model S10 radiator

Nips

I hope to get my other fender tomorrow and start on the TA scoop. Hoping to have it permanently on the truck by the end of this weekend. Also hoping to have some more of it sanded down.

Re: Wrecksurrection

This is quite possibly the worst project I have ever done. I decided that I shouldn't be doing the majority of the work so I pretty much begged Mike (Critical) to give me a hand and we worked out a deal. He came over a couple weeks ago and then today and we (he) made some great progress. I also did some work last night on my own:lol:

Last night, me and Chris (Typhoonluv43) decided to weld in the holes from the roof rack. Here is how that turned out

Now today, Mike went and sanded down the pass quarter panel, filled it and primed it.

I didn't see any big enough to cover that entire window in one shot, so that is what we ended up with. I did get a roll that would probably take three rows to cover it. Guess we can re cover it.

Costco sells BIG rolls of butcher paper, both plain and waxed.... for a great price. I think they're 30" wide. If you've got one close by it would be worth a trip.

Re: Wrecksurrection

you said this was gonna be black? i found out the hard way unless your a professional body man or have one working on it, black end results are gonna give you headaches and disappointment! i wont go into it but i did what you started doing early on. I DO hope it turns out how you want it! and i for sure cant wait to see as well! keep up the good work and patience! lol

They're really gonna be disappointed when they find out we're gonna paint it with roller brushes and a crop duster.
Maybe we should switch to giftwrap and scotch tape too.

OK, we have been making some progress. By we I mean 10% Mike(CRITICAL) and 10% Me:lol: We have made very slow progress to this point but over the last couple weeks we have managed to bust some shit out here.

Worked some on the roof. I got the remaining roof rack holes welded in. Not a fun job. We also put some aircraft stripper on there.

Aircraft stripper on doors as well

And taligate

Mike started mudding the doors

Of course he gives me the worst job of all:lol:

I can honestly say this sucked to do but, I hung in there and got it done despite several things that "came to my attention" that I could have used to get out of it:lol:

Mike "air filing" the door

No more doors:(

Not done with the doors but getting there

I have to say the truck looks nothing short of pathetic, lost and sad. I makes me sick to see my baby like this. Mike swears it will be worth it which I don't doubt. Just wish it was over now:D Well for now thats all. Hoping to have the body work complete by the end of January and ready for paint. Wish us luck:tup:

Don't get discouraged. The more effort you put into it prior to paint makes the results worth it in the end. Take your time and do it right. Some days you get alot done, other days feel like a waste of time.

I wouldn't say I feel discouraged. It just sucks. I actually have a second wind and have been feeling more motivated to get it done lately. With NATS coming, I have a long list of things to complete to get it going again and it will cost a LOT.

Color will be black/black all shiny! Think I made up my mind and we are going to do base/clear. I am also still debating on if I should decals again. Kind of liked it without but at the same time, some red Typhoon stickers would look sick.

Here's a cladding paint idea I found on facebook. He said he's doing it for a guy in Dakota....looks awesome!
