ZQ8 steering gear...?

Hey all. Has anyone ever tried putting a newer ZQ8 steering gear in? I have a chance to pick one up kinda cheap but I also have heard that you're not supposed to put these in a 4wd chassis because the '4wds have different steering travel than the 2wds...'. I know the '82-'94 regular S & T trucks all use the same stock steering gear, so I don't see any problem trying this...? Any thoughts?

I bought one at the local dealer, and as long as you use a 4x4 pitman arm it works fine. Quicker steering without a lot of play really helps!!

It works fine. All you have to do is change out to the 4x4 pitman arm, as that is what makes the steering travel different (the 2WD & 4WD pitman arms are different in length). I did a ZQ8 steering box swap in my 4x4 S10 and it works great!!

I don't know what the part #s are, but the ZQ8 steering box is found mainly in S10 Extreme models. What you are looking for is any S10 with the RPO code ZQ8, as that is the option that has the quick ratio gearbox (it only comes as an option on 2WD models). The 2WD pitman arm has to be removed and replaced with a 4WD pitman arm. I would get the MOOG pitman arm, as it seems to be beefier!

hey again-- I'm pretty sure the newest # for the steering box is 15059802. The old # is 26077902, but it's been recently updated and probably won't show up as anything. The ZQ8 option came standard in production '96-'02 Extreme and SS models and regular S-10's/S-15's ordered with the sport suspension package. Not sure about #s for the pitman arm, I'm just gonna use my stock one. Well, i got my new joint on order & it should be here monday :D woohoo! -well thanx for all the replies & wish me luck...

ps- tloof, 92Ty- how much of a difference does it make over stock? Does your truck have the steering stabilizer?

Ok, just checked the price on this. More than $500 on list price. Wow. The junk yard is my only option left. Not easiest one from here... :-?

Believe it or not, that's where I got mine is from a local boneyard. They actually had it sent in from one of their other yards out of state, but all told it ended up running me $85+tax, shipping included. I forget exactly where but when I first started looking for these I came across some place that told me they could get AC/Delco factory reman'd units for like $175. I think it was just some local parts place, I'll have to check around again.

...So the good news is, mine came in today and I'm looking right at it. The bad news is, I can't put it in because what in the hell size is that pitman arm nut?? The biggest socket I have is 1 1/4" and it's still too small. Anyone ever done this before?

Yes, I have changed out two of them. It requires a 1 5/16" or 1 3/8" (I can't remember which size at this time) socket with a 3/4" drive and wrachet to get the nut to come loose. You have to do this with the steering box out of the vehicle on the 4x4 S10's since the frame crossmember is just below the steering output shaft. You will have to rent a pitman arm puller as well, to get the pitman arm off. It's a real Mother to get off, so good luck!!! (Be sure to install the new 4x4 pitman arm on the steering box before reinstallation in the vehicle, or you won't be able to get the pitman nut tightened up due to interference with the lower frame crossmember!).

I think that the steering box (in the ZQ8) is the same as in the iroc and rs camaros.

BTW: does anyone have the BBC top gear syclone test. Pls email a link @ logicbomb@swirve.com The one at syty.org/old/archives doesn't work.
