Ceramic Coated Piston Test

Re: Ceramic Coated Piston Test

Yea coatings and chemicals have come a long way thats for sure. I had mine done by Dart and was looking forward to seeing how they performed, but i guess whoever buys them will see. I know ill have the pistons for my v8 project coated. Ive had some pistons for my dirtbikes coated and it really helped especially when the head is milled and the compression is bumped way up, we could still run pump gas without any detonation problems...

That is slick. Wonder how the arm pit is doing with to torch in there? Are the pistons in the oven being coated?

Yes, those are my pistons, you spray the coating on them then bake them for 1 hr.

Some people been saying that I need to redo the video using a real torch, something stronger, I will try to do that tonight if I have time while I am out there.

I had just found out my new camera took videos about 2 minutes before we took that one.

Do you have a link to the manufacturer? Is it susposed to hold up to detonation and boost? How do you keep it out of the ring grooves?

I wish I could hold one and put my peepers on it...:eyes:

No I dont have a link, but feel free to call Rockford Racecraft and inquire with them.

I have many pics of the whole process that I am waiting for my buddy to put on my webpage, soon as he does that I will post them.

Re: Ceramic Coated Piston Test

This is from Techlinecoatings.com;

We will look at the Thermal Barrier coatings first. Either CBC2 or CBX may be applied. CBX is recommended for all High Compression (13:1 and higher), Turbo Charged, Super Charged or engines running Nitrous Oxide. CBC2 should be run on all other engines. Both CBC2 and CBX insulate the piston against damaging heat transfer, keeping more of the heat generated by combustion, pushing down on the piston for greater power. By retaining minimal heat on the surface of the piston, less heat is transferred to the incoming fuel mixture, leading to a reduction in pre-ignition which leads to detonation. The coatings can also allow heat at the sur face to move more evenly over the surface reducing hot spots and the coatings reflect heat into the chamber for more even distribution of heat, allowing more efficient combustion of the fuel. This allows more of the fuel molecules to be oxidized, which in turn, means less fuel is needed for optimum power. The result is an engine that makes more power, can be run with a leaner air/fuel mix and less initial timing and has less thermal ex pansion due to a reduction in the heat absorbed.

Ive never tried the stuff but I have always been interested in it.

Re: Ceramic Coated Piston Test

I have been doing some research on these type coatings and when i get to rebuild my engine in the Ty, and the engine for the GT im going to coat everything i can. Seems the benefits are more than worth the cost.

Re: Ceramic Coated Piston Test

Isn't there a ceramic coating for the combustion chamber in the head also? Or is it the same stuff?

I just ordered some stuff to try on my downpipe and xover pipe...will advise when I'm done.
