SyTy's suck

JUST KIDDING! JUST KIDDING! Hey, my name is Bill. I've lurked on here for a couple years and have been obsessed with Syclones since I was a kid. All these years I've put it off until the obsession hit hard again two years ago. Well, it's time! I have finally given in and my quest to own one will end here if it kills me.

A little about me:

I have a good sense of humor and love to joke (if you haven't noticed). I've been an officer/member/mod over @ norcal-lsx.com for just about 10 years. Also member of ls1-tech, corvetteforum (no, I'm not one of THOSE people), baautox.com. I'm die hard Pontiac (RIP) & GM.

I love to race. This year I'll be either karting, autox'ing, and/orroad racing in at least 4 states and two countries! Some of the cars I own/owned:

67 Chevelle 383/350
72 Chevelle 350/350
72 Chevelle 350/M21
99 ESP Camaro, M6
01 SOM WS6, M6
07 C6
07 Cobalt, M5 (great beater/commuter)

Thanks for having me, and I'm looking forward to adding to the community!

-Bill

P.S. In case you wonder the origin of my sn, I always thought it was funny that people needed secretive names to be online ---> Bill + John Doe + dildo = codename Bil Doe

Welcome to the forum!

Who was it that lied to you and told you that you were funny? :D

What is your plan to buy one - there are plenty on here.

Good luck!

Re: SyTy's suck

Going to post later today or this week. Looking for more of a running project that works but need TLC more than a Marlboro or a spotless one w/16 miles and owned by Lee Iacocca.

-Sy only

-$3-5k

-MINOR surface rust not necessarily the worst (though, I'd like to avoid east coast salt cars)

-needs to be running/driveable. Bone stock is perfect.

-not looking to swoop someone's 10sec car with $40k in mods

-Would like clean plastics - nothing cracked so I don't have to spend twice the price just to replace them

-Would consider salvaged as long as title isn't from accident or being driven into Hurricane Catrina. Would like a straight body one.

Picky but flexible. I'm sure there's one out there that fits the bill and me it. Kind of like the runt of the litter that you know you were meant to be with.

Even in this market, a $5k Syclone is gonna have more than surface rust. And if by clean "plastics" you mean cladding you'd be VERY lucky to find a truck priced that low with all of it intact. BUT....crazier things have happened!!! Good luck. .

Re: SyTy's suck

I think you'll be surprised how many people actually agree with your title on here HAHA. I go about week to week, loving then hating my truck. I'm sure it will be different once I finish it...but until then I'm stuck.

Seriously though, best of luck with your search...but like already said you might want to plan on spending a little more money than that to get something to fit your criteria. And of course, welcome to the group!

Re: SyTy's suck

Definitely that's a starting point. I'll see what pops up. I don't want a $10-12k one. Little more of a fixer upper than those, but not one with bullet holes or burned to the ground. Large window to work with! :)

No need to tell me about love-hate relationships with cars. But, in the end I'd rather sleep with a needy car than a busted woman. At least the car appreciates when I change her oil.

As we say on norcal-lsx, pics or ban. So, here are some pics:

Funny guy huh? We will have to keep our eye on you! Welcome. You are right, sytys do suck! Suck your wallet dry that is. Be careful, a busted syty is probably no easier on the soul than a busted woman. So for your sanity try and find the best sy you can afford. Spend a little more money now and spend a lot less later. Good luck and welcome aboard.

I think you might find a woman would be easier/cheaper to work on than a TY. Welcome to the forumn.

Re: SyTy's suck

I think you misunderstood me and took what I wrote in the wrong light. Just because I gave a starting point doesn't mean I'll necessarily find it for that price. If you head on over to the Marketplace you'll see that there are a couple for that price. Unfortunately, I missed out on the one in Tracy which would have been perfect.

I'll add that I would also be interested in a Sy with a blown motor as long as it's clean.

If they were such POS trucks I wouldn't be looking for one. The cars I listed and have been fortunate enough to own are ones I've previously owned. Right now I have 3: the Cobalt (bought new for $4500), the Camaro, and the Monza which we bought for $1400.

There are plenty of deals out there. It's a matter of looking and being patient. I apologize if I have offended you, but it's a matter of market. We pay $200-400 for smart phones over here that are handed out free in japan. They pay $10 for a cheeseburger.

I'm looking forward to learning a lot here, meeting new people, and (when the right one pops up) finally getting a Sy of my own. Definitely been waiting a long time to pull the trigger!

edit: my other cars and their deals -

'67 Chevelle - $600 off junkyard owner in high school. salvaged title cuz it was stolen
'72 Chevelle - $2500 in high school
'72 Chevelle - traded my automatic '72 for M21 4speed
'70 Charger - $2100 in high school. Had a 383 and my friend totaled it. Lesson learned the hard way.

We used to spend hours driving up and down back streets and knocking on people's doors asking if they wanted to sell the muscle cars sitting in their driveways. Still do, sometimes. Even if they didn't sell, we usually got a great story of how they ended up with it.

Re: SyTy's suck

You do realize the cars you are listing are all mass produced where there are only 3000ish Syclone ever made. So when these guys say it will be hard to find a truck for under 5k they mean it especially with good cladding 7-9 is more the range you are looking at unfortunately at 5k most people will part the truck out

Re: SyTy's suck

Oh yeah I understand completely. I'm just giving a starting point lol. Go to a dealer and they want $70k for a new camaro. You offer $6k. Somewhere in between you find the right price.

I think people are taking the number I quoted as "that's it this is what I expect make it happen now!" Definitely not my mentality. If I see the right one pop up for $7k I'm there!

I'm just glad to learn about Sy's and meet more people who love high performance vehicles. I guarantee you won't find me on a Prius forum. ;)

Re: SyTy's suck

A few years ago we probably wouldn't have thought $7K, or even $10-12K, was even possible. More like $17k.

$3-5K may be around the corner. Markets change.

Your approach to aim low is a good one - if someone doesn't want to sell that's their choice. Often a seller will come out of the woodwork and accept a deal you can't refuse!

Re: SyTy's suck

If you spend less than 9k on a truck look forward to the other 6k+ to get it to a livable shape. 3-5k isnt bad to start out but then you''ll need about 12k to get it right.

filthy sy
Re: SyTy's suck

There was a piece of crap sy on craigslist sf and the buyer was firm at about 5k. You could buy a cheap one but $$ will be needed to make it run right. Although I've seen a few cheap ones out of state, very few cheap decent trucks show up in Cal.
