Ty Wont run

Hi guys. Im at the end of my rope. I have tried everything I can think of with the truck and I cannot solve this problem.

The Problem:
The truck starts fine and idles fine occasionally. But usually after about 30 seconds of the truck idling it dies. Almost like the key was turned off. Then when I go back to start it. It is flooded. So clear flood mode then after over 10 seconds of cranking it finally fires back up. Then repeats the problem. After about 3 times of this the truck will just not start. It does this idling or driving. It doesnt matter the truck just dies. After the truck sits overnight or so though the truck will start right up. Then repeats the process. The truck ran fine before this started.

What I have done:
I have pulled plug number 1 (the plug was covered in gas), changed the plugs, changed the Ignition module, pulled the (42lb) injectors and the chip had those two things checked they were fine, checked the AFPR for leaks/gas in the vacuum line (the line smelled of gas, but figured that was from the gas in the cylinders), checked high and low for electrical shorts found none, checked all the plug wires (MSD wires) they seem to be fine, Pulled the MSD wires and tried the stock wires no luck, checked the oil repeatedly oil smelled of gas, changed the oil, checked the fuel pressure its right on point. Pretty sure that is it.

The truck:
The truck has about 10/1 compression, forged rods and pistons, vortec heads, 42lb injectors, TT chip, scanmaster 3, MSD spark plug wires, new cap and rotor.

So I am just looking for any input whatsoever, anything I haven't tried. Any weird places that electrical shorts could be, new plug wires that would be good to try. I have read what I can find on the forums. I just need some help.

Sounds like one of 2 things. timing issue or bad Fuel Pressure Regular. My Sy had this problem when I was using an Ultimate Gauge set at T3 on a stock truck. Check your timing. Also check FPR. Pull the top hose off of the FPR. Start the truck. If gass comes out of it. It needs to be replaced or rebuilt.

Re: Ty Wont run

have you checked o2,tps,map? sensors that could cause a serious rich condition?

I has a similar thing happen .... my ty ran good and normal , drove it about 1HR. No problems ,shut it off and it wouldn't start after sitting for about 30 min just turned over . I started checking it ,I had spark and fuel ,pulled a spark plug and it was wet . Cleaned all the plugs and it did it again ... I pulled a fuel sample and it had too much ethanol .. so I drained the tank and added clean fuel, it ran bad for a few minutes then then cleared up. But now it has a hiccup at full throttle, it will idle smoothly and normal driving is good just when u get on it at high rpms It will act like the rpm limiter cuts on ..

The FPR diaphragm is busted. Replace it and pray that your main bearings aren't toast.Change your oil after.

The vac line smelling like gas,gas in your oil,it can only be one thing. Probably.

Yes I think the FPR diaphragm is bad. Going to check that tomorrow or Tuesday. The whole idea behind more compression is less turbo lag and less boost needed for the truck to run good. Is there any way to check the diaphragm? Other than taking it apart. I was gonna try and put the stock regulator on it and see if the truck will run with the stock one.

you can crank it up with vacuum line off, if it is bad gas will come out of regulator when running

So this is probably a stupid question. But when you say crank it up do you mean turn the fuel pressure up? Or just run the rpms up?

Re: Ty Wont run

Just start it and if diaphram on regulator has a hole in it, when you take vacuum line off gas should come out when it's running or have fuel pressure

Re: Ty Wont run

Ok so I checked the AFPR and when running no gas comes out of the FPR. With the top vacuum line off no gas comes out. So thats not the outcome I was expecting. I pulled the codes off the ECM and I got code 12 and 34. 34 is for a bad map sensor. Would that cause the problem I am having? A MAP sensor isnt hard to change out. Since I am on low boost right now could I switch out the 3 bar map for the stock one to see if thats the problem? Thanks for all the help guys.

Re: Ty Wont run

yes it can cause the problem. if your boost gauge is reading 8 psi at idle your computer is prob throwing the fuel required for that at idle, a massive amount of fuel. not positive but you might have to get a chip to match the 3 bar if it using a stock one now. check your vaccum line to map and make sure not split somewhere and that theres a good connection at map sensor.

Ok I will take a closer look at the boost and the vacuum lines around the map sensor. I have a 3 bar map for the custom turbo tweak chip. I think I will try and switch the map sensor back to the stock one. Any huge problems with doing that? Im still running low boost about 8 pounds, if that matters at all. The 02 sensor and the throttle position sensor would be throwing codes at me if they were part of the problem. Right?

Don't put back the 2bar sensor with the 3 bar chip. Has this combination (10:1 motor, 42# injectors, TT chip) ever run right?

I checked the vacuum to the map and checked the other vacuum lines. They are all in great shape. So Im not sure what to do with the code 34. Im gonna keep looking into that. But I feel like if the MAP sensor was bad the truck wouldn't run at all. The truck when it doesn't flood within seconds of starting, it runs great. Pulls hard and doesn't miss or anything until it dies. I think I am gonna pull the ignition control module and the throttle position sensor and get those tested. Im guessing that one or both of those are broke.

I was pulling the spark plugs wires and found that some of them are brittle and hard. I need to get some new ones. But I really don't want to deal with wires getting too hot anymore. From what I have read Taylor makes the best heat resistance wires. But what wires do you guys think I should run?

Seriously thanks for all the help guys.

Re: Ty Wont run

Yes the truck ran great for a few 6 months or so. It pulled hard from a stop and rolling with low boost. I can tell a huge difference with the vortec heads and the compression. It runs as hard as it did stock with about half the boost.

Re: Ty Wont run

Turns out the ignition control module was broke. Not sure about the throttle position sensor. So just to be safe I replaced that too. I thought for sure that would fix the problem. It didnt. The truck still dies randomly and floods. Im not sure what to look at next. Should I try a new map sensor? Im gonna order some taylor spark plug wires to get that possibility eliminated.

Re: Ty Wont run

I doubt it has anything to do with ignition. flooding would be caused by sensors that control fuel(map,o2,tps) or fuel regulator or even pcm going out. personally I would try map sensor
