Bigger and better.....

So I joined here when I got the Syclone, but was never very active.

Since then I blew the motor........

Well after dealing with life and getting things in order Guy at Rockford Racecraft and I came up with a game plane. (HUGE thanks to Guy for being so patient with me )

We were gonna just rebuild the motor the way it was with a few new upgrades to try and prevent any future carnage as seen above. After some BSing about different projects he had and how crazy I am, I mentioned I had an LS1 sitting around that was originally intended for my never ending S-10 project.

So I decided to donate the LS1 from project LS10 to project Syco. We are going to drop the LS1 in the Sy, throw on some turbos, and keep it AWD.

Stay tuned...

Re: Bigger and better.....

WOW.

How much boost did it take to do that?

Non stock rods indicate a built motor. what was done to it do you know?

Re: Bigger and better.....

was probably originally built by Rockford Racecraft

Indeed. The only stock piece on the bottom end was the crank. The truck had sat for quite some time before I got my hands on it, the wastegate stuck closed and it saw about 25psi.

Re: Bigger and better.....

i bought a Ty with an identical problem. also a build block, but also snapped the crank.
that weren't Nodulair maincaps?

Re: Bigger and better.....

One thing i noticed is that people install good pistons, good rods, main caps, bolts, however still use old (redone) crank. The problem is that these cranks are old, many have over 100k on them, they have metal fatigue. I feel the ONLY way to go is to buy a BRAND NEW crank !

wow you really know how to F up a motor:rotf: and I though just spitting out one rod was bad enough.

Re: Bigger and better.....

Detonation caused that I suspect.

Did you do a PROPER tune with the new motor when it was installed?

Your going LS1 now, but it will also need a proper tune or you will do the same thing.

Re: Bigger and better.....

I have seen alot of blown motors, but none of them looked this bad. Good Job .

Re: Bigger and better.....

I wonder what that kind of catastrophe sounds like:lol: When I threw a rod out of my diesel it sounded like a blown tire but it was still running:rotf:

seeing as how I bought the truck with only 40k on it, there wasnt much mileage when the motor was built.

I guess I didnt make it clear, Im not the one who had the motor built. Neither was the person I bought it from, the owner before him had everything done. The truck ran fine when I got it and one day the boost shot up and this happened. As stated before, the consensus was that the wastegate had stuck closed and the truck made around 25psi.

Re: Bigger and better.....

I wouldn't think a brief encounter with 25psi should cause that kind of damage IMO.Although you didn't say it was brief;) Good luck with the swap.

Re: Bigger and better.....

I ran 25-26psi pretty much on a daily basis for a few months. And the motor saw it a lot. I broke #3 ring land. You can ask Pope, my cylinder walls still have the cross hatching on all of them like it was damn near new, at 70k.even on #3 that when I pulled the piston out I could remove the ring lands.

I think Tyson was around 30-32psi for a while before it split the block.

Its all in how you treat it I think.

But your truck was tuned for 25-26psi right? I never said the motor was incapable of handling it, it just wasnt tuned for it.

I run 23psi on my cobra and beat the ever living hell out of it, but its tuned for it. Put 23psi into a mustang with a stock tune and youll blow it to hell. Its all in what its tuned for.

Re: Bigger and better.....

I've seen some broken stuff before but you need a frick'n award for that one DAMN!!!!!!

That's total distruction right there... had to make one hell of a noise!

Good luck with the build!
Scott..

OH... and if there were NEW cranks avalible that were not over 3000.00 I'm sure we'd buy them!

Re: Bigger and better.....

No, my truck was not even tuned for performance. We only had time to tune it to run and then get the O2 somewhat normal. We set my fuel cut at 26psi and I bounced off it a bunch of times.

Crank had nothing to do with that... detonation had everything to do with it.

I've said it before...Doesn't matter what parts you put in it. Eagles, Olivers, billet crank, etc - if it pings, it'll die. Stronger parts die slower, but they all come to the same end.

Motor hit big boost, detonation, smashed a rod and/or crank bearing, rod grabbed, carnage ensued.

This can happen with an LS motor too. There's no magic engine that withstands massive deto.

Re: Bigger and better.....

Just weld it all up and do it again. Now that you know it will blow at 26 lbs, just back it off to 23 lbs so you have a safely factor built in.
