P.O.S. shifeter cables

So Im 80 miles away from this evening when my shifter cable breaks. I noticed when I was getting back to my mother in laws after Home Depot. When I went to back up into a spot at her house the shifter felt all messed up. Turns out the cable at the base of the shifter bent. The funny thing is... when I finished building my engine in february 04 I put the motor in ( never touched cable ), went to put in drive and nothing. It took me DAYS to track down a new cable. I finally found that the only ones who can even order it is Advanced Auto Parts who I m really not too fond of. Im just wondering...does anyone else have problems with shifter cables? I was lucky enough not have parked where I couldnt drive out forwards. So I drove all the way home with no shifter, had to put it into OD by hand under the truck.

Advanced Auto Parts can get shifter cables???? thats news to me, how much are they?

Everyone for the most part usually just bites the bullet and gets them through GM.

I was going to start looking into making a cheaper alternative to the GM cable, but I just havent had the time to do it yet.

im calling BS on advanced until you take pics of the cables side by side.


Im a victim of the broken shifter cable (by fault of my own) and there was nothing even close on the market, GM is the only place you can get it.


The cable looks similar to something out of an LS1 or corvette....which is what morgan is taking about when he means a cheaper alternative.

Dude call BS all day I shall prove you wrong. WHen I discovered a new cable it was initially at NAPA. Check the MOTOMITE company. They had one in the catolog but when I called them they said it was not in production anymore but it was going to start back up but they didnt quite know when. The guy at NAPA told me to ask other stores for this part # cause almost all other parts stores go through MOTOMITE. Go to Advanced auto and tell tehm you waant Motomite part # 16662. Theyre going to tell you they dont have it but they CAN order it. Depending on who you deal with they may tell you they cant find it. I called about 3 stores before I finally got someone who figured it out. I just ordered mine today. They will tell you its N/A if you ask for a cable for the Typhoon or Syclone. To all you cable sanppers out there, you better hope I dont get the last one...BTW...only $42.00.

When your having cable problems, many times it`s a bad ground to the engine. If the shifter cable feels stiff, that`s it!
Your starter is grounding through the cable.

How in the hell does the starter ground through the cable? Even if it did why would that cause my cable to bend. I have been noticing that lately I get a shock almost everytime I touch the body but I doubt that would cause the cable to break. I am very interested to hear the theory on this. Hey Loerider, if you want I can post pics of it when I get it in.

Your missing one of your grounds, their a ground cable of the back each cylinder heads amd one off the tranny. Many time the ttanny ground is missing after transmision work.

Just checked stock and I have access to this cable that typhooner0073 mentions. Price is $35 with limited availability. I can special order a few of these and keep on hand if someone can find out FOR SURE that they are right. Returning special order stuff to the factory is a hassle and I don't wanna have a bunch of useless cables on the shelf, ya know?

Do you have pictures of this cable typhooner0073? Even better if you have one comparing it to a stocker......

Basically, you are gonna need to get an overall length measurement, and then make sure that both ends are identical to the oem cable.

Someone found a cable by an aftermarket manufacturer and it was too long and one of the ends didn't match, even though the parts guy behind the counter swore up adn down this cable would not only fit but be less than half the cost of the oem cable.
I was kidding when i said i was ordering.
I will wait and see what you get first....

Noone that I know of has found a cable except for the GM cable that is $100+.
It is SyTy specific, not an off the shelf corvete of F bday part.

Where is the tranny ground?
I have had my tranny out of my truck twice and never notivced a tranny ground.
Only wiring I recall was VSS sensor in x case and the TC lockup harness.
i have a couple of the braided grounding straps just haven't decided where to stick them yet.

I contacted 3 manufacturers (ATP, B&M, & Hurst) last time we had this conversation, none of which currently offered anything or had plans to. HOWEVER, Motormite (Help!) is manufactured by Champ/Dorman and isn't considered a large cable manufacturer (nothing like ATP). Therefore, I didn't consider checking with them back then. My attempt this morning led me to believe I was the only intelligent life holding a phone during that conversation.

So......if I can find out for sure that this cable can be made to work, I'll be on the phone in 2 seconds. But, I'm a little reluctant to do so until then.

Never mind my stupidity. A tranny ground is on a Corvette (a common problem after tranny work) Sorry, as far as I can see no tranny grounds for a SyTy's. The case is a lousy conductor anyways and the ground would the crossmember.

Check the grounds on the back of each cylinder head, passenger ground goes to the battery cable, drivers ground to the firewall.

I just called to confirm my order and they told me that the bone head working the other day did not complete it so I had them order it today and they told 7-10 buisiness days cause they dont have it in the warehouse they have to go to the factory. It sucks but it definately beats paying $240.00 at the stealer. I may not know EVERYTHING bnut it sure seems noone has any faith in what Im saying here. I wouldnt post if I wasnt sure. If I wasnt sure I would have made a post that I wasnt sure asking where to go. I think this is something everyone should know cause it IS a bit difficult to track down and if anyone needs help PM me and I will hook you up. I dont care how great a GM cable is $240.00 is an ass load of money to pay for a friggin cable. $40.00 is going for sure.

BTW...is the tranny supposed to be grounded from the bell housing to the starter or to the frame?
