Pull the tranny.

Pull the flexplate.

Remove the seal. Replace it all...

Bummer! :(

Re: rear main seal blew.. easy fix?

You need a one piece rear main seal and housing assembly, GM part number 14088556. It is quite a job for a home mechanic with the engine in the car. I put a new rear main seal assembly in my engine when the engine was out of the vehicle during a complete engine rebuild.

Check all oil pan gaskets for leaks before replacing the rear main seal. Replacing a one piece rear seal and housing assembly is an 8 hour job for someone who has done it before.

loookin for seal there is like 3different styles n then i seen that jegs sells a plate to convert it to a one piece seal instead of a 2piece... i hate when things aint cut n dry... rear main would b done on a lift.. so pullin trans n transfercase isnt a problem.. when i jacked truck up n started it n reved it once oil poured out of the bell housing hole... so im pretty sure it.s the rear main seal...

Re: rear main seal blew.. easy fix?

autozone has this one listed n another felpro kit that looks identical but diff number... i would hate to order the wrong kit... thanx again guys for ur help...

If you order a Fel Pro seal or any other seal besides the GM 14088556 seal and housing assembly, you will have to use your old housing. It is not easy to replace the seal in your old seal housing. That is why GM offers the seal and housing assembly as a pre-assembled unit.

You will pay about $20 extra for the convenience of using a GM seal and housing assembly in lieu of using the Fel Pro seal. in you old seal housing.

When my engine was rebuilt, a new rear seal came in the Fel Pro gasket kit. I tossed the seal that came in the gasket kit in the trash and used the GM 1408856 seal and housing assembly.

Re: rear main seal blew.. easy fix?

You'll need space to get access to the back of the engine to work on the seal.

Pull the trans all the way out and drop it. Take the transfer case off as well. Going to make your life a lot easier.

I am curious, why did the seal fail? Are you sure just replacing the seal will cure the problem? If the motor has a lot of miles on it, wouldn't a rebuild be due?

Six-is-Enough

Use to do a little Boost

X2. Cracked pistons or rings lead to blow by. Blow by under boost causes big increase in crank case pressure. Which causes the rear main to leak. I would do some compression testing before proceeding.:2cents:

Oil lines adapter to block o-ring?

Crank shaft seals don't leak much with the engine running because the PCV system creates a slightly negative pressure in the crankcase that sucks the oil back in. Worn crank seals leak with the engine shut off.

"its poorin out the bell housing" sounds like a pressure-leak (oil lines or adapter), not a seal leak. BWTFDIK?

Re: rear main seal blew.. easy fix?

Best bet IMO would be be to de-grease everything under the engine and trans, along with the engine itself, and add some UV dye to the oil. NAPA sells it in small bottles, just add it to the crankcase and run it for a little while. Special UV lights make it easier to see, however it will still show up under normal light. Sounds like more than a rear main leak if you're getting a large volume of oil.

Re: rear main seal blew.. easy fix?

Ok I thnk dave gets the cake... I was just under it n had my girl start it.. its leaking from where a oil filter would screw on if it had a normal setup.. soon at it starts it pours out oil from above the 2 13mm bolts that bolt the housing up to the block... is that the normal leak spot??? The oil lines with the 1 13mm bolt doesn't. Seem to be leaking... I asume there's a rubber oil ring inbetween the adapter n block??
Here's a pic...
