Wanting a Sy/Ty, general questions long post

Eh you guys aren't going to want to hear me talk about my other car but I think its history will help you understand what I am looking for.
I own an 11.36 1/4 '85 supercharged camaro atm with 45k original miles (10k on motor) (547hp 499tq dynoed before tune). I am 19 6'5" and it is just entirely too small and TOO low for me. It is borderline too radical for the street...the 295/50's i'm running can't even grab traction and if I floor it at 45 I can fishtail out of control, and even when I do get traction off the line I break second, and third.... Problem is I bought the car with no paperwork, it has fuel management timing control and is too advanced for my carbed small block skills. I can't find anyone that will help me work on it or even show me the basics. I picked it up for a very reasonable price and I am going to sell it and start looking for a ty/sy. I'm not going to lie, I street race for money, I keep it safe out on farm to market roads with a shoulder (usually around a dariy)and need something NOT so flashy since anything less than a mustang will not think about racing me.

The reason I want a Ty/sy is the fact that a man that rebuilds wrecked s-10's (totaled) said he had a Sy and the AWD let him launch better than any car he has ever had. He said he can work on them no problem and no project is too big for him with one. He works at a VERY reasonable price, and I figure if I have any problems I can just take it over to him. He is a friend of the family.

I have done my homework on sy/ty and think the TY would be more roomy for me even if its weight is considerably higher (600lbs?). I plan on stripping decals off, putting flip out gauges under the dash, with the only visable gauge being boost gauge (I always look at my camaro's)

Questions:

How much HP can stock tranny-rearend handle?

How expensive would it be to get it down in deep 11's or high 10's and keep it streetable (10k miles per year tops)

Gas mileage on modded?

I am on the phone and have drawn a blank, I had more questions thought :) If I remember I will add

Thanks all

The rear wont be a probably till you get down in the low 10's high 9's as we have recently seen from Ed Hess 9 Second Syclone. As for the Stock trans, they break even with stock motors pushing them. There are many people here who are on their second tranny and more who have gone though 2+. Im personally on my 4th or 5th fully built trans (ive lost track) and my truck only runs mid 12's currently.

How expensive? Very and when you toss in "streetable" that becomes boarderline impossible. You'll be hard pressed to find anyone who even puts 10K miles on a SyTy per year, let alone one that runs that fast and actually gets driven. I drive my truck for 8 months out of the year and put 2500 miles on it just driving out to the SyTy Nationals each year and I dont even put 10K on my truck anymore. I did rack up the miles when it was my daily driver, but within a year I realized it just wasnt practicle anymore, especially when things break.......and they WILL break.

Gas mileage on modded?
Depends on your foot, but what I have read on heavily modded trucks, look for anywhere from 9 - 15 MPG City and 15 - 20 MPH Highway.

I am on the phone and have drawn a blank, I had more questions thought :) If I remember I will add

Thanks all
feel free to ask away. Im sure my responce as well as other peoples responces will trigger more questions.

It really depends on your sitting position, I fit pretty comfortably in my Sy and I'm 6"3. It depends on your idea of streetable. The weight difference is about 400lbs. Like Morgan said though you're gonna break trannies, a lot. But it's fun launching with 10 lbs :D .

where do you find a dyno for AWD? /boggle didn't think about that till just now :)

What in the world? These things throw trannys that fast? What is wrong with them? My 700-r4 is built to take abuse and I give it to it. I can't imagine throwing that many with stock set up...

Are they very dependable? For road trips and such say 500miles one way?

Eh the more I read the more it makes me think I outta keep the maro :(

Also, you guys are stalkers :) LOL I keep reading and people are like "Number 1233 out of ND went to a man in SC then back to ND and ended up in CA" LOL :rotf: :rotf:

They are becoming more popular with the rise of the Subarus and other AWD vehicles. You'll have to listen to local word on the street for that one.

SyTys weigh 4000lbs plus the addition of AWD = no wheel spin = more stress on the transmission, not to mention turbocharged vehicles make a lot more torque than N/A motors. I believe there were 2 dyno sheets floating around on this forum for 2 stock Syclones producing 500+ Lb Ft of torque at the wheels. You do the math, lots of torque + heavy vehicle + no wheel spin = busted trannies.

Very dependable, no. If you look that word up in the Search feature above, I bet you will find many 2+ page long threads of people saying how unreliable these trucks are.

500 mile trips, sure, they arent a problem really, as long as your not doing it everyday. Once you buy a SyTy, there is are a few things which should be addressed which will add to the reliablity of the truck, some of the following being....

Datamaster (or other scan/data logging tool)
Spark plugs (AC CR42TS or NGK UR5)
Wires (any decent brand wire, most people use Taylors or MSD)
Cap and Rotor (Conrad is popular, but anything with brass inserts is a MUST)
Fuel Pump (even if its good, most likely it will fail at some point)
Fuel Filter
Normal fluid change and lube (Oil, Trans, Transfercase, F & R Diffs, Coolant)
and there are a handful of other things that will make the truck better, but anything can still fail at any point. You have to look at it from the view point that your buying a 12+ year old truck.

Eh the more I read the more it makes me think I outta keep the maro :(
You arent the first person who has come on here and said that exact same thing. Im certainly not trying to turn you off from buying one of these trucks, but I dont want you to be blindsided by some of the problems they bring. They can be a lot of fun, but they can be a nightmare as well.

Also, you guys are stalkers :) LOL I keep reading and people are like "Number 1233 out of ND went to a man in SC then back to ND and ended up in CA" LOL :rotf: :rotf:
yeah, we are forever searching for an exact number of trucks that are left in existance and their locations, along with other things. Its a neverending search thats taking numerous people many many years to even get this far.

just put a jack under the front wheels and go at it. Or take the front shaft out. Some people will say you can't but so far no problems here.

If your car hooked as hard as these it would scatter that 700. Ive never seen a 700 that could handle high HP/tq. I blew a couple up in my 442 when it was only making 450 at the wheels and they had all of the killer parts in them

you could use a powerglide tranny... they use em in dragsters, the weight aint there, but the power sure is. i aint a mechanic, but i would think the tranny outta a wrecked denali or ss would work... theyre pushin pretty good power and ample weight.

Brilliant, I bet he'll love driving 10,000 miles on a 2 speed transmission, not to mention ive never seen a transfercase bolted up to a Glide.

yep, the 4L80E/4L85E is an option, however both of those transmission are computer controled, so you either have to get a manual valvebody installed (thats also lots of fun for lots of driving) or you have to get a stand alone computer to shift the transmission. It is a good route to go, however you'll be spending at least $3000 off the bat just to get a good core, torque converter, the computer to run it, plus you might as well build it up before you install it cause stock sucks. Kind of a large chunk of change to dump into a truck right after you buy it, but yes, it is a good suggestion.

always can go with a th400 but that probably isn't much fun with screaming RPM's on the freeway because you don't have OD.

As you can see, the options are limited unless your wallet isn't.

what if you replace the 4.3 with a newer 4.3 (say from an xtreme) and use the tranny outta an ss. both computer controlled. i assume you could get the engine to talk to the tranny???

everything has compromises. if hes racing hes likely pullin in some descent coin. the most important thing would be keepin it a sleeper. what all would be required if you were to swap those components. Wreckers have quite a few of them availible. Or would that pooch the turbo system which was designed for the older 4.3's?

lol, youre so headed in the wrong direction.

first off, the new 4.3L engines are weaker than ours and the engine isnt the problem, its the fuel injection and computer system that would need to be swapped, but that isnt even an option cause the newer 4.3s arent turbocharged and really cannot be adapted to do so, so its not even an option.

the way I mentioned above with the stand alone computer for the transmission is about 10000000 times easier than what you just suggested.

Everything you ever wanted to know about clones and phoons is out there for the learning.Take a couple weeks and do some research.

The 700's are gay weak.Even with all the best parts money can buy, expect failures. Daily driving 600 ft lbs breaks parts.

High 10's has been done with a stock motor,pt52 and 50's,but that's an anomally.Expect to spend 10k on a strong build (engine, tranny, convertor, turbo,DP,fuel system mods, datalogger, gauges, ect) and cross your fingers that it holds up.

Mileage? Bah,we don't need no stinking mileage

Nobody has touched on this yet, so I'll throw my $0.002 in here.

You aren't going to get any simpler with these trucks than what you have on your camaro. Tuning is KEY to making these trucks runs well, and all that is done through a rather primitive chip burning process. Just about ALL aftermarket DFI systems have a nicer user interface than I have seen for Sy/Ty land. There are some that come close (I like tunerpro) but it's the same thing your dealing with now. Don't look for an upgrade in this area.

I'm also like the other guys.....not trying to push you away, just making sure your eyes are open to what your looking at coming into.

Yes I drive a Typhoon.
you could always try and find one with a busted motor and put a v8 in it. It would be cheaper and more reliable. :2cents:
