Original Sy wheel colors?

Hello all,

I took my wheels to the resto shop this morning.

He is hell bent to make these things perfect (FINE with me!) and wanted clarification on the exact color that's supposed to be in the "pockets"?

Specific GMC letter red?
The center cap screw well supposed to be natural aluminum?
I've seen some in red but assumed that was done as owner preference?

Thanks in advance for all the help.

Re: Original Sy wheel colors?

Check the back of your cap for a color sample

My 1991 GMC syclone has RED blasted on the back of each wheel cap.

I pulled apart a 1992 teal typhoon like a maniaic and behind the centercaps was teal color. ( not sure if PAS did this) I have only messed around with my 2 trucks, and the teal one I ripped apart.

Check the back out. In some cases you can go to a paint shop and they have technology to match colors from a swatch, chip, panel..

Re: Original Sy wheel colors?

My caps do have red on the back, as a matter of fact.
Interesting.
It's a very dull red but red nonetheless.
Thanks!

Re: Original Sy wheel colors?

That's what I recall seeing.

Now I need to nail down what color gray? silver? clear coated aluminum? goes in the pockets of the wheel.
Hmmm......

Fella doing the wheels said he'll research online for good representative pics and match the powder coat to the color.

I cannot WAIT to see the finished product. Wow.

The could be argent? I have no idea.

A lot of guys toss out bead blast word.

Bead blast inners, turn outer, clear. ?

Oh so your powder coating? That sounds different than refinishing.

Re: Original Sy wheel colors?

Don't quote me on that.
All I know for sure is he is going to turn down the whole face of the wheel to re-establish the original machining marks and clear it.

Not 100% sure about the pockets but if they do require color (still trying to nail that down), I think it'll be powder and not just paint.

The guy is beyond thorough. :)

Re: Original Sy wheel colors?

I received an update from the wheel resto shop yesterday. Finally!

The owner of the place has taken my Sy wheels on personally.
Now into the third week, he said they should be done by this weekend.
That'd be nice. Fingers crossed.

Anyway, the guy is amazingly thorough.
These things ought to look incredible.

My Sy looks awful up on jackstands for the past 2+ weeks! :(

If/when I do receive them, I'll post pics immediately.

Re: Original Sy wheel colors? UPDATE!

Hello all,
I cannot, with a clear conscience recommend the person I'm dealing with on my wheel resto to any of you.
I'm going into the fourth week with no progress. I'm getting the run-around and being lied to.
Hopefully, after I get off work Monday I can pick my wheels and tires up peacefully and chalk this up as a learning experience.
Missing quality time in a vehicle (my Sy) my daughter REALLY takes an interest in, missing loads of nice weather driving, missing a few excellent car shows and three BIG local shows coming up in the next two weekends.
No sir, had enough.
A man has to draw the line somewhere.
Wish me luck.

Re: Original Sy wheel colors?

Thanks, Kyphoon1.

The reason I went with him is he came HIGHLY recommended by the top notch body shop in the area.

Can someone please explain to me why this guy doesn't want my money?
It's mind boggling.
I am NOT getting a discount, I'm paying full price CASH.......get the darned things done, get your money, feed the family (or whatever) and everything is hunky-dorey.
Sounds logical to me.
What am I missing here?

Re: Original Sy wheel colors?

Just use Sportmachines. The shipping maybe rough, but they will get it done, and right!

Re: Original Sy wheel colors?

All in, it was considerably higher than $500, I know that for sure.

I can't recall an exact number so, until I hear back from them, I will not post an amount.

After all the hell I've been through? Worth every penny, though!

i like the stock wheel look, if the wheels are generally in good shape and not bent as they seem to get possibly worth it maybe huh?

Kyphoon, I wish I could rattle off a number for you but I do not want to flame Sportmachines in any way. The guys there have been very helpful for me in the past.
Yes, it's a lot higher than $500 the character I'm dealing with quoted but man........worth every penny.
I don't have the money to go the Sportmachines route anytime soon but rest assured I'll be saving and trying to!

I didn't choose the local wheel resto place for price, it was because they were recommended by the body shop in town. They are "IT" when it comes to full resto and custom cars and if they said he was okay? Whew! It was a done deal in my mind.

I gotta say.....they owner of the wheel shop is a smooth dude. Superb talker. Got me roped in right away. Had me strung along for going on four weeks now.
Never in a million years would I thought I'd be on a hard deadline for a series of car shows a MONTH away when I decided to go with him.

Re: Original Sy wheel colors?

Syty wheels have a machined finish, most wheel shops dont deal with this finish that often, if your not out money the dude isnt a "snake" he just took on a job he couldnt complete, happens alot in this field. Im not trying to be a dick, but if you had the winter to refinish your wheels why did you wait till right before show season to dig into the project? I see his side easier because i own a shop and it always seems like march everyone comes out of the woodwork to get stuff done and there just isnt enough time in the day.

Sportmachines wheel service is the only place ive seen restore syty wheels correctly.
