Think I just blew my first transmission..what now

Took off from a stop sign normal speed, heard a grind and before I could even let off the truck lost drive and grinded to a stop which sounded horrible. I could not get it to roll in any gear and had to get it towed home. Still runs fine, no matter what gear the truck will not move. I can see a little rpm drop when I put it in reverse, but still no movement out of the truck. There is no holes in the trans and no fluid on the ground. Driveshaft is still connected. We got it to roll in neutral with 4 people, would stay locked in park and not move..

Soooo what happened here? Will probly start pulling the trans tomorow or the weekend, but curious about what actually happened. I'm determined to make it back to the track before seasons over. I do not plan on building a 80e trans since I don't plan running faster then high 11s. Should I rebuild this trans, or find a replacement?

Alright.. This shall be a experience lol, I've pulled transmissions before but not out of the Ty. I havent even checked the smell on the dipstick yet.. Just got it in the garage, laughed and came in.. I can't complain much, owned It for 2 years and this is the first major thing that's broke on it..

Exactly That trans should have went a long time ago...:) you got your moneys worth for sure..Just slap a th400 in it simple and easy. Will take as much beating as a 4l80e but no overdrive, but also no need for Trans ECU.

I have a similar Transmission prob from a Ty. I think Its Sprag as well. Think I have a spare Trans Laying around bought it from a boardmember complete with Engine. Tear it down may be a easy fix.

You got a year more out of yours than I did mine. Don't let the "while it's out..." bugs bite you. They're all over these trucks. I'm still getting bit.
Another vote for forward sprag.

Been calling around all day.. Talked to atomic racing, he quoted me 1800 brand new built trans, but also said my transfer case took a dump from what he thinks since I lost every single gear..

Before I start pulling everything apart and it's on jacks, is there a way to test if it's transfer case or trans?

Did it make any racket when you pushed it? If the transfer case or one of the diffs broke,it would have made a hell of noise when it was pushed.

When put it out of park to try and push it in garages, it made a very light sounding clunk and was extremely hard to push like someone was inside with the breaks pushed on

If you have to pull the trans anyway, you can test the TC before you pull it. Pull the prop shaft which you have to do anyway.

Apply some torque to the front output on the TC. There is a write-up on here. DaveP composed it. That tests for the viscous clutch. I'd have to refresh myself on the TC to find how to test if it had failed entirely but I'll put $20 on it not being the transfer case.

Here you go: DaveP's VC test

And the way the TC works...

I'm in the air what to do If it is the trans.. There is a couple built ones between 1500-2500.. Or rebuild mine for 1000.

Thanks quickstop I was considering trying that tonight when it's in the air

it will be for sale if i do get the new one "which more then likely will happen"... i currently getting the ty in the air, i smelled the dipstick and it smells normal and theres no metal debris.. sooo...

up in the air, nothing obvious i see wrong besides a trans line is leaking more then it ever has and theres a puddle.. gonna get the prop shaft out now and go from there

If your planning to be running 11's, your going to need a beefied up transmission. A $1000 trans rebuild isn't going to cut it. It was just matter of time before it happened.

i just did the davep test and it clearly passed it.. so now time for lots of pictures and get this trans out

Sorry to hear about the trans letting go. It happens to the best of us when we least expect it..

I would keep your case. Trans case... It is numbered to your truck. Stamped vin # on case. To me it is foolish to get rid of the matching # parts but that's me..

I have around 1500 invested into my trans rebuild so far and it is a small pile of parts so far with a hefty $. I was reccomeded a kit from 700r4l60e.com. the reccomended kit is the more expensive one at $900+.

I am keeping my fingered crossed the gear box don't let out again.
