I am not sure if the PTE turbo are still available with our exhaust housing, but I would use some think like a 6157, 6162, or 6262. The turbo sizing for our motors is similiar to Turbo Buick. I just would use something smaller than a 67 with the stock head and cam.

Re: Which Turbo to go with?

My question to you is have you done all the basic tune up things first? plugs, wires, cap, rotor, vac lines, walbaro 255, adjustable regulator, i was told first hand by Nolan to make sure my ty was running 100% before even thinking of upgrades or tuning, he knows his shit when it comes to syty's but if your truck is not running 100% to start with it can be a waste of time trying to tune it, just my :2cents:

fwiw, pte doesnt have any of the syty turbine housings available, and has no eta on machining housings for any of the new wheels.

we have had to go back to the gn housing with our own 3-4 bolt adaptor and reconfigure a new downpipe just so people can still upgrade to a turbo kit.

I went from a stock ty with all the relaibility upgrades, fuel pump, psi regulator, 3 bar map sensor and code 59 to RPM's stage 3 60/1 dual ball bearing turbo and i"m really happy with it. I would go GT35R or RPM stage 3 with an upgraded coverter, 2800-3000.

Thanks! looks like RPM offers the BB Options so Ill probly go there :)

What are people using to monitor there engines. On the GN we use the scanmaster but they dont seem to make one for the Sy/Ty :( I thought they used to though :(

Re: Which Turbo to go with?

I don't understand people saying "the seals in my turbo" dried up. There are no seals. On the exhaust side of the turbo is a piston ring labeled as a seal. Unless its coked up with carbon and stuck to the shaft. Not sure how people are coming to the this conclusion and replacing the turbo.
Betting the manority of the smoking people are encountering is from valve stem seals as discussed here.

The scantool software we use is the TTS Datamaster. $199 with the Aldl USB cable on our site. We can also help troubleshoot problems and running condition but it sounds like you got a good handle on it.

How ever you want to put it the turbo is leaking oil into the intake track on it. So its bad I know this is the issue as I have been messing with Turbo Buick's Mine and my friends for about 10 years. I got a screaming deal on the ty because of this :) Inter cooler is all gummed up and will have to be replaced I tried cleaning it and its not coming clean. ALso the rubber couplers are all oil soaked and nasty its been this way for a while Im guessing. The engine is fine I have done a complete compression check on it and and replaced the oil seals (they were fine) just to be safe. Truck ran and drove fine just smoked under boost bad.

Re: Which Turbo to go with?

Whats it run???

Well, I'm not too happy to report I ran a 13.7 with a trap speed of 96mph, 60ft time was 1.78. I only got 3 runs in, I was running 100 octane fuel with 20psi. I got a lot of KR. I finally burned a new bin and that chip I had little KR on 93 and alky, much more timing where I needed it. I did a run on the street the other day with a new bin. I used my iphone and the software Dynolicsious, whiched clocked my 1/4 mile trap speed at 101.8mph and ett at 13.88. IF the trap speed was correct, the new bin has a difference of a trap speed from 96 to 101.8mph. The new bin helped, BUT....... I should be in the low 13's with stock components! I should be DEEP into the 12's with my mods, RPM stage 3 dual ball-bearing turbo, 2800 stall, 3 inch cat back with no cat, code 59, walbro 255lph pump and afpr set at 50, plx wbo2, alky. WTF?

Needless to say, I'm not happy.

To the OP...if you are planning on having Nolan tune the truck, ask his recommendation and go with it.

If you want my personal opinion, there are options to the 3-bolt GN turbos and the PTE housing stuff. I have a 62mm on my truck that has put down over 500RWHP and is still just getting started. I have also personally witnessed a 59mm turbo from the same company do 508FWHP@26# in a Cobalt SS, and that still had plenty of breath. Either of these turbos would be on like a light switch with a 3000-stall converter and make for a very fun truck.

Re: Which Turbo to go with?

qbnkiller,

WOW! What other mods do you have? I'm basically stock internals with alky, walbro 255lph fuel pump and AFPR, 3 inch cat back with no cat, code 59. RPM says the stage 3 turbo is a 100hp upgrade. I've yet to see anything as of such. I"m currenlty considering either L 35 heads or possibley Vortech conversion, or selling the TY:D

Re: Which Turbo to go with?

My Ty is bone stock, nothing done except 3" cat back exhaust. It seems to run pretty good for a stocker. The only issue i have is that I am pretty sure the old stock turbo oil seals are leaking especially on the exhaust side. Every time i start her up she will give a puff of smoke then smoke is instantly gone. Last time i looked at the compressor it seemed ok with no play in the shaft. The turbo is probably still ok but I just want to start looking around for a good replacement for a bone stock motor. I plan on getting it tuned by Nolan just dont know if i should change the turbo first. If i have to put a different stall in i will, no big deal. And any other upgrades to match the turbo. Thinking of getting an alky set up to and get it tuned for that also. 20G? I could probably just ask Nolan, but I would like to also hear what you guys think.

Nothing wrong with upgrading the turbo on a stock engine. For sure talk to Nolan, he has given me great advice before. Maybe just keep it simple, upgrade the turbo, little more fuel with some alky and a perfect tune.

Thanks for the reference. I have some experience in tuning my past cars using TP. Maybe I was expecting too muchout of the rpm stage 3 turbo.... RPM's site says under the stage 3 turbo to expect 100+hp gains. I have not seen anything even CLOSE to 100+++hp if any gains over my stock turbo. I've been tuning it for a year with my plx wide band trying many different bins. I thought I did notice a difference when I first put the new turbo on, but my current track times are the same which prove to me that I"m missing 100+ HP:tdown:. Maybe by mistake RPM sold me a stage 1 instead of a Stage 3 60/1 turbo? Who F$#Ki(g KnoWs at this point? ? ?
