Re: Finally!

You don't want Yellow on a Ty. I'll see if I can the my pic of one here in IL. It's my facorite color (on my old 79 Z) but it just dosen't look good IMO on a Ty.

Congrats.

One other thing I didn't see mentioned is the IC hard line delete. Get those metal tubes off the engine, and run good quality heater hoses to the IC.

Re: Finally!

what about the intercooler override switch? is this neccicary? does it add and extra power? or just help run it cooler?

you mean the IC hotwire? Yes, it makes the IC run continuous with the ignition on and it will run cooler. It will also tell you if your stock pump is dead. You can buy a replacement pump that fits in the stock location. It doesnt add power, but with it, the truck runs cooler and more efficient. You can also take out the metal IC lines and replace with 3/4" hose for more efficiency and better cooling.

And on cooling... change the stock thermostat to a 180*. Alot of guys run 160*, up to you.

Re: Finally!

Hey, it has 77K+ on it already. Drive it! How do you intend to enjoy it if you don't drive it? I just spent an extra $300 on fuel to drive my Ty on a trip I would have done anyway in my Blazer just for the opportunity to drive it 6,200 miles in 17 days.

And I now have bragging-rights that it can be done. With no problems.

Dave

yeah might as well, im just afriad of it blowing up on me... im not easy on cars this is my... hold on let me count haha... up wards of 8 since i was 15 including this ty and not the wives cars lol

already on the thermostat, having the wife take it in and change it out with a 180 and keeping a 160 on hand incase i get bored.

Keep it stock. Keep it the correct color (Garnet). Join our group here. (Shameless plug for my 'Social Group' that suffers from Stagflation).

Tune for the expensive fuel if you must, be be warned that this DOES increase stress in the engine, and WILL affect reliability, even if done correctly. The learning curve with these is steep, and costly. Search using the keyword "Datamaster" and you'll get an immediate idea of what you're in for.

Regards,
Dave

X2 on that, Dave knows what he's talking about.
There are only 15 Garnets to be claimed, and with the original paint job you have is a great thing! Not many fully stock Ty's left around, so I'd keep it bolt on only, and keep all original parts in hand. In addition, when I bought my 1st Ty nines years ago, There was a college kid in town who owned 2 of them. He said he learned his lesson on running the first one hard, and the second one he took it easy and had no problems. He said, "If you run 'em hard, they go to shit real quick" and the owner I bought my 2nd Ty (who owned 3) said: "let the turbo warm up and cool down for long drives, keep boost launching to a minimum, and keep up on maintenance, you'll have no problems." I myself, have followed this advice since, and with only boost launched a handful of times over the years, and rolling into the gas instead of WOT, I've had no issues or problems. They are still fun to drive, as they are "swift" when easing into the pedal at certain speeds. Watch out for pot holes, etc, as the rims bend easy, keep it out of the salt and snow, as it can get behind the cladding and rust.

There's a great community here full of helpful info and advice, In addition here's a link to the Archives that includes the web ring for all things syty. http://www.sytyarchives.com/

Congats on the truck! Take care of it!

Good price...great color!!

Well, if I can't have it, I'm glad someone in the forces got it! Thanks for your service. :usa:

Stay away from dealerships for service. Ask around...surely some SyTyers in your area.

....and if I read correctly you used only mid-grade gas?(mine only sees 93 oct. min). I will use you, Dave, as my inspiration to use my Ty as my only car for the next 2 years. It will see about 8-10000 miles a year. I "ride" instead of "drive" most of the time. The lease on my Outback is up 3/03 and I almost have the Ty tiptop and it will stay stock except for rel. mods and a conservative quality tune. My Ducati and Honda Ruckus get the most miles. The Ty will be used for hauling my daughter and dog. I would love to get a side car for the Ruckus and throw some goggles on Charlie :myclone:.

Re: Finally!

Stupid computer...... Anyway, nice color, congrats and welcome. I have to agree with a lot of the other comments made so far. Work on reliability first, and get to know what's stock and what someone else may have modified already. Driven "responsibly", I drove my Typhoon from Virginia to Washington state this summer. No problems, and the truck had 113xxx miles on it at the time. One thing to look at before beating on it too much is the vacuum lines nobody has mentioned. When my wife brought mine home (I was also deployed), there were loose connections everywhere. The turbo creates a lot of heat, frying the rubber lines. Have fun with it, they're worth the money!

it just so happens, we are in the middle of making stock replacement vac kits, go look in my sig link

If you want one, PM me. I will have a few extra kits available when I finish up the GP run.

no the guy i bought it from was an enderly gentalman that knows alittle more about the trucks than i do and always use the highest grade he could find, i believe is 91 is idaho some times 92. And i plan to do the same, i have instructed the wife to as well... all i can do there is hope! :rotf:

Re: Finally!

Whoa there Big Boy...... Take it where?

Biggest pit-fall of all for these trucks is letting people that don't understand them work on them. Even more so when driven in by a good looking woman. Looks like it's in snow there in the pics, and she has her hands in her pockets. Must be cold. The heater works better with a 195º anyway, and won't hurt a thing. You'll get better fuel economy on the drive down, too.

haha yeah i wish i could do it myself but i want it done when i get back, but its a family mechanic who wont install my boost gauge because he doesnt want to depriciate the value! from what ive heard he is very knowladgeable, but im taking what you guys have to heart, ill wait and tinker with it myself.

Re: Finally!

common prob.... my syclone does the same deal, the syclone 8 houses down from me does it.... solution is to replace the oil pressure switch if it really bothers you.

on the vac kit..... vac lines are a common problem on older trucks. the stock ones become dried out and brittle and often break or crack. broken vac lines are one of the top things everyone recommends checking when your truck isnt running right. Our kit is top grade silicon with glass filled nylon T's and check valves. Manufacturer Lifetime guarantee on the silicone.
