Re: Rebuilding Ty #284

Well, I have gotten a new exhaust housing that isn't cracked, and is actually a great piece! I need to buy some studs for it so I can attach it to my downpipe. I will be putting it on this week. let me know some more details about that ceramic coater ken, and also how much of a heat insulator it really is. I do run a blanket that keeps it cool enough to touch, even after a 4 hour drive.

I say use bolts, much easier to r&r if needed..........:2cents:

I was thinking studs, I could get the nuts off of the studs no problem, but the studs WILL NOT come out of the cast iron housing no matter what I do.

Re: Rebuilding Ty #284

well, after rebuilding the turbo, and making sure its working right I took it to the track. same issues :rotf: It did pull better though, and spool faster, but it was still only able to make 14 psi with a short surge of 20. I am going after the boost solenoid next. However I am perplexed to some extent. I replaced the 20G with the stock turbo and it seemed to build boost just fine, without trouble. It is a pretty heavy modified motor though, and perhaps it was just surging alot more than stock....I figure its worth a try. There is no way that the turbo is to big for the truck, and I cannot find any leaks pn the intake, or hear any on the exhaust, so I am at a bit of a loss.

also, to those of you running meth, don't not run vp. I was knocking like crazy. I ended up pulling all of my timing to even run down the track. 12.56@110 @14psi/-3* of timing

Re: Rebuilding Ty #284

Well, I was driving my gf to lunch and while I was waiting in the drive through I noticed that my truck was being surounded by blue smoke. I went straight home after we ate and parked it in teh garage with ti running, and it was pouring out blue smoke, smelled strong too, differant than normal. I decided that it was prolly the turbo, I couldn't see the motor just letting go in a drive through.

The best way I could think of to test it was to let it cool, and start it cold and see if it burned oil right after it started, or if it had to wait for the turbo to heat up enough to actually burn it in the hotside. I started it and it didn't burn anything for at least a minute. I shut it off and pulled the turbo off, noting that the side to side play on teh turbo was HORRIBLE and had started to contact the side of the housing just a touch. I got it off and saw that the heat sheild behind the exhaust turbine was soaked with black gold...

I don't know what I could have done wrong, it seemed so simple to rebuild, and I followed all of the instructions perfectly, I don't understand how I ****ed it up, but I'm embarrased to even admit that its messed up. Not sure if its savible...Luckly I have the stock 17c turbo and I put that on. Seems fine now that its been replaced.

Re: Rebuilding Ty #284

you wanna hear about luck? I just blew that 17c apart. Compressor wheel came apart on the freeway. Started belching so much smoke that my buddy behind me had to pull off the freeway. The motor was still running fine, and not making any noises when I pulled over, but I had it towed home. I'll tear into it tomorrow and put some pics up. I hope the intercooler took most of it...

I hope the I C took all of it for ya. Maybe ya outa put that other turbo on it instead of the blazer project?

Re: Rebuilding Ty #284

the 76 mill? That might be a bit draggy with my build. I do need to do something. I might have to have someone "professionally" look over my 20G. somethings ****ed up, I just am too ignorant as to know what it is. Everything looked good to me when I put the 20G together, and the 17c I never touched, it just exploded going down the freeway, although it did happen in 4rth at 4500 rpm...

Re: Rebuilding Ty #284

well, i managed to get the 20G balanced and it was way off, gey said whoever balanced it before must have only doen the compressor, because the compressor was close but the exhaust was horrible. I noticed that it was also marked and he wanted it to be put back together in a specific way, as opposed to last time when he said it didn;t matter.

Anyway he also looked at my center section and said that the reason that it had blow apart was because of a ring that had been ground into the housing from the exhaust side. He said they really didnt sell new ones and that I would have to find one (he did have one but it was 950) I asked him if a 17c center woudl work and he said he thought it would, other than the 20G was a superback and the 17C wasn't. lucky for me I knew what he was talking about. The gouge that had been worn into the CS had also been worn into the shaft, he cleaned it up and gave it back to me, saying he was pretty sure it would work.

I went to put it back together using the 17c and saw that that housing was good, although dirty. I cleaned it and began assembly. I couldn't get the exhaust side snap ring to seat right, and bent it taking it off a few times. When he cleaned it off he made a bit of a lip where that ring is supposed to sit and and ended up having to file it back out (carefully) but I ruined the ring so I was ****ed.

I asked warmpancakes if he had an extra turbo laying around and he didn;t but he had just sold one to neil. I assumed neil had a bad stock turbo and gave him a call. sure enough he did, and he offered to let me use it for parts. I got it home and saw that the trust play was good, and that the oil seal had no wear on it. I put it on my turbo, and assembled it. The only other issue I ran into was that the regular back thrust bearing was longer, and I had to re-use the original. I torqued it down with some lok-tight and checked it for play. no thrust, a tiny bit side to side.

I won't have time to put it on until saturday. hopefully I can make it to the met, should only take me and my buddy an hour to get it back on and running, and 15 minutes to do an oil changed.

Re: Rebuilding Ty #284

I managed to frankenstien the 20G back together using the original 20G wheels and housings with a 17C cartridge and a second 17C exhaust seal (works too). WHen I first put it together it seemed sticky do I didnt drive it to the meet (sucked) but when T got home it seemed ok...It might have just been the thick thick oil That I had used to assemble it with...But I drove it up and got a carwash. Seemed to drive alright, no new sounds other than when I left the driveway. Heard a wichg click ck ck ck ck ck cklack CLANG noise and looked behind me to see a pair of needle nose plyers get ejected out of the back of the truck and into traffic. Went back for them...

I notice that the truck smells like oil but isn't burning any...I'm going to attribute that to the exhuast most likly being filled with oil from when the exhaust wheel left the housing taking the seal with it.

I am hoping everything is alright with it, although I have a feeling Ill be taking it off again before spring to look at it anyway. I need to get started on this blazer...

Re: Rebuilding Ty #284

I took the turbo off last night and my fears that I had bent my turbo's shaft were confirmed. There is brass starting to cake onto one side of the front bearing surface on the shaft and the bearing itself is starting to wear improperly, and this is after less that 10 miles of drive time.

Last night I also managed to find a guy with a 20g thats in good shape for a good price. I am planning on buying it this week and either rebuilding it, or simply putting my compressor housing and my exhaust housing on it and calling it a day. If its in as good a shape as he says than it shoudn't be an issue. felt good to work on a complete vehical again...

Re: Rebuilding Ty #284

I rebuilt the turbo yesterday and reinstalled it on my truck. Seems like its doing fine, I'll check it out this weekend and see how the play is.

That also being said I took it out for the first drive its been on since mid december when I bent my 20G. A couple problems, one, I think I collapsed a lifter, but I'm not sure. Only other problems with the truck is the battarys toast and I need to buy a silicone line for the bov supply as the one I have now cracked and is now a nifty vacume leak. I forgot how much I liked driving that truck, and I was astounded at how well it handles.

Damn... That's a couple month of turbo issues! Hopefully you've got it right as rain now.

Amazing how nice those coilovers are.... I'll be happier after I get moar poly in!

Re: Rebuilding Ty #284

Well, I replaced the battary and fixed my vacuum lines, so thats out of the way. Drove it around a bit yesterday, seems to drive good, and build boost fine. needs some tuning, but thats to be expected with this 'new' turbo...(tuned for a 17c before)

As for my 'collapsed lifter' I decided it can't be one, just because it doesn't do it during first start up at all, motors smooth and sounds normal. It will start to do it as the rpm's climb under load, and once its hot (and i mean 30 minutes running) you can just sort of hear something at idle, so i'm thinking mroe twords an exhaust leak. I'm gonna take a look at the pass. side manifold today and see if I can find a crank, if I do maybe I can weld it up myself, hardest part will be getting the manifold up to temp evenly without a nice garage oven.

Re: Rebuilding Ty #284

Thanks quickstop, its been a long 2ish years, but Its come far.

registered it today, good thing to do....

Ticking was caused by one of the leakiest exhausts you could ever imagine. I am embarrassed that I alone turned the wrench on all of those bolts. Perhaps the loosened up on their own over time, but I am not certain. The turbo had only 3 bolts in it, and upon further investigation the third bolt was a crush nut and hadn't actually been tightened down to the point of reaching the flange, so I got 2 new bolts and tightened them down. 4 of the pass. manifolds were finger tight, and after all of that was done it didn't seem to leak anymore...I'm gonna blame the mani bolts on the gaskets crushing, but the rest was me just assuming that I was tightening a bolt when I wasn't and not seeing that one nut was missing. I've had the turbo off so many times, I suppose I can forgive myself...
