Re: my small project

What stall PI convertor did you get? I was having a hard time choosing between the PI and Coan convertor for my 80e swap. What sealed the choice for you?? I chose the Coan 3000 stall.

Speaking of that you just got a 4L80E, that's cooler then me so here we go.

Thats the only way I can get new ones. I plan on running low boost and take it easy. but yes, I can see smoking my kdws tires off.

Re: my small project

 Everyone has a breaking point. I just reached mine today. I asked 2 "friends" for help. Neither showed up. had to do the trans by myself. It just wore me out. I now need to spend more money. I am starting to get fed up on such a small project. Thinking i might just put it aside for a few months. I have a bottle of patron tequila I am now going to get lost in. hopefully I feel better tomorow. Sorry for the Rant.

I had to lift the TC over the 3rd member and then lift the front and slide a brace I made from uni-strut so I can put my jack under it. Then I pinched the fuel lines and.... What a day. I am tired...BTW its a tight fit in there. Had trouble lifting up and clear the flywheel.

Re: my small project

Wow, I can't believe you lifted that as one assembly, with the t-case attached. I had a hard enough time bench-pressing the t-case up off my chest, not to mention wrestling with the trans. Hey, if you need to borrow some 6-ton jackstands or a 3-ton jack, let me know. So I found out my turbo is toast today. Pulled the IC upper tube off and it was full of oil. The turbo shaft doesn't spin easily and has a good amount of sideways play in it. So I drove the truck around for about 20 minutes to burn out the oil that the turbo pumped into my motor and I thought I was golden until I got home. The exhaust started blowing thick white smoke, so it seems that I have a blown head-gasket? There was no obvious oil in the coolant or vice versa, so it must be a small leak. I pulled all of the plugs and they looked fine, except for the orange coating from the Torco. I was able to do compression checks only on cylinders 2, 3, 4, and 5 since 1 and 6 are blocked by the ATR headers. The compression on those four was 130, 122, 130, 135 respectively. Not sure about the other two cylinders, but the truck still idles perfectly and drives fine. It's just blowing white smoke from the exhaust. Any ideas? I'm thinking of buying a set of ported/polished Vortec heads and intakes and opening it up to see if it is indeed a head gasket. No idea why the RPM 60-1 turbo went bad after only 5K miles or so. This sucks...

Re: my small project

I thought the turbo was smoked by the way it sounded. Compression soulds a bit low but all are prety close to the same. I would do a leakdown test. That will give you a good idea if its a bad head gasket, valve or what. 26psi will smoke a stock head gasket. not sure why the turbo died. guess all the boost overworked it.
Yes it was heavy. I can bench 280lbs and the angle it was at almost killed me. My shoulders are still sore. Never doing that again by myself. I was sent a diagram of the fuel lines and I had them that way. Guess they were bent or its so tight with the new trand that I pinched them. when I went to fix them I kinked them. Then I just took out my saws all and hacked them off.

do you think 3 month old gas is still good???? I will siphon it out and want to use it in my suburban. Heck @ 315 a gallon I want to use it.

Re: my small project

Well, what else could cause white smoke to come from the exhaust? I don't feel like spending any more time on it if it's 99% certain to be a blow head gasket. I think the bottom is is still OK, so I may just get in touch with Waller and redo the top-end for now. Would be similar to the project you just went through, but I'm not pulling the motor out unless I have a forged-shortblock to replace it with. Ha, I used to be able to bench 300 lbs. in my twenties, but now I can only do 275, so I guess we're pretty close in that respect. I pinched my fuel lines too, but only slightly. There is only a slight groove across the top of both of them from where the bellhousing pushed them into the cab. I guess you'll need to use braided lines with AN fittings to replace the stock ones? 3 months is nothing...you'll be fine. Mine sat for a 1.5 years when my original trans blew and it started right up with the same old gas.

Re: my small project

Just a thought Jeremy.... the turbo is cooled with engine coolant. Maybe when the seals went bad it created a small leak from the center cartridge to the intake.... I'm not even sure this is possible cuz I have never seen the center cartridge from one of our turbos sectioned to see if coolant could even leak to the intake... but, just a thought.

Re: my small project

I wish that were the case. The turbo I have is only oil-cooled. It makes use of the factory oil supply line and the RPM kit comes with a braided return line. I will probably stay with a non-BB turbo because I don't want to put those turbo coolant lines back in. I guess running the turbo at 20+ psi for extended periods just overheated it? I wish I knew what caused it to fail.

You should put an oil cooler on the inline to the turbo if thats the case .

thats a good idea. You can use the outlet on the remote oil filter and pipe that to the front oil cooler then back to the turbo.

Re: my small project

Gary you should have called me, or sent me a PM, I was just picking at taking my engine apart yesterday, but mostly doing nothing. My number is (925) 784-8787 next time call me I'd love to help, I remember pulling out my POS th350 that my chevelle came with and that sucked, I would hate to do a 700R4 and a transfer case alone.....

Re: my small project

try a 80e and t-case and converter. 80e is bigger then the 700r and weights a bit more. I thought of e-mailing you but I would hate to have someone I just met do something that sucks like this.

Re: my small project

I feel a lot better today. Getting drunk off my ass last night helped. After spending a day bench pressing a transmission I needed a break. It in but I still have some work to do underneath but at least the heavy stuff is done now. BTW I am thinking of painting the truck to match the converter :D

Re: my small project

Its going...slowly but going and going to get slower
Just found out I have type 1 Diabetes. I have been fighting infections for a month now and been having problems. Was going to get a Tattoo that my friend designed for me but thats out :( . Insulin will be comming soon as I talk to my doctor today. This might slow down my truck work a bit. Its a bummer, My grandma died of diabetes and my dad has type 2.
On to some fun stuff. Got my fuel line stuff today, minus the stuff I need from RPM.
