NATS 2011 needs your help!

Well, I came to a realization this weekend that there is absolutely no way I have time to fully and properly head up NATS so I'm thinking I need to step down and pass the torch.

I will help in some capacity but don't have the time to iron out all the details with my ongoing work/wedding planning/house/family/etc to put in the time I devoted to the last round when I had none of these things going on.

So...in order to keep NATS alive and thriving...we need a new chairperson that has the time/resources/ambition/decision making capacity to continue the direction that NATS has turned. I don't want NATS to die and don't want it to go downhill so there are some prerequisites for you to even be considered for this position:
  • you must be a well known, well respected, moderately long term, and all around proud member of SyTy.net
  • you must have the time and dedication to donate to NATS. It takes a LOT of effort, patience, and communication to plan something like this and have it turn out as intended.
  • you must have attended previous NATS events to have an idea of what fits into the event
  • you must own a SyTySoGT (whether it's in shambles or driveable...you must be an owner)
  • you need to have good communication skills. having some connections/resources available wouldn't hurt....and knowing the right person to delegate the right tasks to is extremely important

So if you feel you have what it takes to be the person for the job, post up in here or send me a pm/email (mike@michaelrenz.com) and let me know why you are trustworthy enough...and even what kind of ideas you have and what direction you would want to take the event. I don't want to get some stupid 1 line message that says "pick me i had a cookout once and both people showed up." Previous experience planning large events is a huge plus so that you have a clue as to what goes into planning this.

I did not track the hours that i put into the event, and don't know what the rest of the committee spent either. But please realize that you will be making plenty of phone calls in searching for and reserving venues for food/racing/pictures/gatherings/presentations/parking lots/warehouses/etc. As example...i had a backup warehouse ready for NATS 2009 in case we got hit with rain - we were going to take all the trucks into a 50,000sq ft warehouse and stay dry. I also reserved secured parking for long / high $ travellers needing a safe spot to keep their high dollar builds in case they showed up early. I guess my point is that there is a lot more to an event than what you just see as an attendee. I would also highly recommend delegating tasks out and will be more than happy to setup a schedule for shifts on game day and helping pan out who should do what/how much. I just cannot be responsible for all the mass communication as i don't have the time to do it anymore.

The committee is still here, and we still have a wide variety of skills/resources at our fingertips...just none of us have the time to dedicate right now. We will still back up / help with decisions / point the chairperson in the right direction.

Your duties will start immediately and i will share everything that i know/learned/have with whomever is chosen to take the reigns. I look forward to see who is interested in helping out!

Thanks,
Mike

Honestly, I would if it weren't for the Shindig. I'm no masochist, but I do enjoy organizing an event.....sadly, the Shindig is gonna sap me of all the energy I have.

Good luck to whomever takes over.

I'd consider it also, but I no longer own a SyTy.

As Renz said, there's a strong Nats committee fully behind whomever decides to step into the Head Honcho spot. Step up to the plate peeps, we need to keep Nats rolling.

i had a lot of fun throughout the organizing of NATS. I didn't mean to make it sound like hell work in the first post  I just want to make sure people know what they're getting themselves into and not just jumping blindly into the position.

With someone of your SyTy dot net stature, I'm not sure why this rule should apply. :dunno:

The other disqualification would be I've never organized an event this big.

It was the largest event i'd taken on too...but i'd helped w/ some smaller regional events.

No 'application' will be auto-rejected for lack of a prerequisite...just having them all will make you be a prettier candidate for the 'job'.

I can help from a distance if anyone needs it. Most of my family is in Denver and I grew up there so I'm pretty familiar as well

Don't think I'm the rock star you are looking for, never been to NATS, only made it to homecoming 2010 for a few hours, never organized a large event like this but I would love to be a part of it and help in anyway I can and learn about what it takes to pull off NATS.

I would love to get more involved in the community and be able to give back.

Please let me know if I can be any help.

well you sure don't sell yourself very well

I really feel that someone with 'rock star status' as you call it is a better fit for this kind of position since you'll be the main point of contact for most everything surrounding the event as well as the #1 person to deal with all the sponsors, registrations, etc. NATS has had sorta behind the scenes chairpersons before and it just seems to be easier to have someone more known sitting there.

this doesn't mean that you can't tryout for the spot. But you'll have to do a better job hyping yourself up than what you've already typed out. :rotf:

Point taken, but really not gunning for the job, more so showing interest in helping the community. I'm not the one for the lead this time around, but I am genuinely interested in helping, learning and keeping the things going as I really enjoy my truck and meeting others with the same interests. I've learned so much from this site and continue to do so and would like to be involved in a positive and productive way. So just offering help. If you guys need some one to make phone calls, send emails, track down space, food, whatever, let me know, I'm willing to put in the time, get some experience and meet some more syty.net members.

I'm with you, I want to help but not be the guy in charge. Please let me know if there is anything that I can assist with.

mike, who is on the committee? or was? i think they should chime in.

the active committee members (by screenname, in no particular order) were/are:

Me, Captain Morgan, PhoonTy, TwinTurboV8Ty, Six-is-Enough, Loeryder, Syo237, jksyclone with a couple others helping/attempting that weren't really involved in the decision making.

But as you can tell by the roster, it's all members who are pretty prominent/well known in the community and who have done lots in the past for .net as a whole, and have pitched in in previous events (be it NATS or others), run local syty chapters, produce items, etc.

i do understand, but it comes down to the "how do I get experience if noone wants to give me the job?" :rotf: im not begging for "a job" but this community has been good to me and id like to give back any way i can.

anyway, if any committee members wanna delegate some responsibility, im in.

Re: NATS 2011 needs your help!

I'll chime in as part of the current committee.

I will continue to help and be a part of the Nats committee. I wish I could take the torch once again and lead, but I just have to much on my plate.

I will back up Renz in saying that to those who are interested, know up front that it is a huge job and needs to be treated as such. That means you will be spending a considerable amount of time on the phone, sending emails, sending letters, building relationships (vendors/sponsors/attendees), chasing after people, spending money wisely, and setting things in place. If you CANT devote the time, DONT DO IT. Not trying to twist it into something bad or scare people, but thats just the reality of it. It's work.....no...its a job, plain and simple. The person who takes the torch needs to know that its not all glam and glory and a lot of responsibility rides on your shoulders. You need to know how to delegate and hand out tasks...you CAN NOT...i repeat..you CAN NOT do it by yourself. Even after the event, there is still work to be done with thank you letters, getting feedback on the good vs bad, totaling spending vs profit for next event, etc.

Having helped do Nats 99, and fully taking on Nats 2000 (which took me a full year to put together), organizing countless FL events, and now Shindig, Im also available to pass on my knowledge of what needs to be done, how to do it, or help with input of execution of organizing an event.

Bit of a side note...I actually own a huge binder/case of documentation, hand written notes, and paperwork from the very first Nationals in 1998 and some from 99 that Chris Pearson gave to me back in 99 when I stepped up and took over that year. Its amazing how much OG owner information is in it from letters, little notes, personal information, etc. from back in the day. I think there has only been maybe 3-4 people ever to thumb through it. While I dont think it has any money value, its neat to own basically the entire starting point of the SyTy Nationals, which to me has a value of its own.

thats for us to decide

I'm sure many people thought NATS 2009 would flop with me at the helm since my track record with my typhoon is less than glamorous.... but non-automotive skills are what are most important here. Having of sense of peoples/trucks needs helps too.

Having people local (or semi-local) to the location of Nats would help a bunch as well, I suspect.
