yea, it drove there, and I washed it for the first time in a few months. Drove it up and down the road real easy. Turbo sounds a bit different, even though it never actually built boost I could still hear it. its goin to the tranny shop tomorrow morning to have the front pump check out. Second motor this year, don;t want to make it a third.

Re: Rebuilding Ty #284

Took it to phils trans. They checked the converter out and made sure everything was installed correctly. they also checked my line pressure and said that it was a bit high, but right where it should be for a truck such as this. They adjusted my trans cable, and when i drove it home it didn't wanna shift until 3800 rpm with light throttle, and 4rth gear was gone. I adjusted it back, and it seemed fine after that. truck felt quick for only 5 psi.

Installed a new set of speakers, a set of boston accoustics I got for pretty cheap, like new, and sound way better. Thanks to some spade terminals I managed to leave the factory wiring in tact. I also fixed my intercooler hose issue, I was getting a kink in one of the lines behind the intercooler. I managed to find a form bent 3/4 heater hose that fit perfect at az for 7 bucks and installed it, using a hacked off piece of a tranmission dipstick tube as a coupler (perfect fit)

I started tuning my truck tonight, and its been going alright. for some reason it idled super rich, and then was super lean during accel, and super rich cruising. I hope to have it registered and insured tomorrow, and then get it broken in over the weekend a bit, although i should not get to involved with that until I get my alky kit installed, until then I have a nifty vacuum leak that that duct tape just can't stop.

but, just driving it was nice, the brakes are better than I remember, I would go as far as saying it stops better than my cobalt ss, but the steering response is way worse, at least roll wise, it feels just as attached to the road, and the action is the same. for less than 5psi and half throttle, and below 4k rpm, its quick, surprisingly quick...

Re: Rebuilding Ty #284

So far pretty good, I basically got the same one as you but with just the single clutch lockup. with the WG programmed full open I did a brake torque to just see what it would do, and it seemed to stall out at around 2800, but that was at about 3 psi. I didn;t wanna stress it any being a new motor, but it still felt good. Drives with no issues around town thus far, tv cable might still need some adjusting.

Re: Rebuilding Ty #284

Good. When you are running more boost it might stall higher, but as long as you like the drive-ability thats whats most important for your application.

Re: Rebuilding Ty #284

yep, and for that it seems good, i can really feel it when it locks, its like an extra gear. I got insurance on it today, and am going to have a plate on it by tonight, then I'm gonna drive it until its broken in this weekend, by which time I hope to have my batt reloction kit and thereafter install it and my alky kit. I spaced out the alky kit and figured out how it goes in, I just need to figur eout what pin on the ecm to tap into for the map sensor (instead of doing it at the sensor itself)

Re: Rebuilding Ty #284

I've been driving this around...alot. First day out I drove it around the block a few times, and checked for leaks and such, only issues I had was power steering fluid was low, and the belt I got was a half inch to long, both of which I fixed, and then I proceeded to go on a 200 mile road trip around flint. I stopped from time to time to check things out, and everything looked great the whole way. While I was doing this I tuned the truck, I started off with the idea that I was going to be flowing more air, and was going to need more fuel to compensate for it, i so i upped the F30 for F29 table? (table that you usually start tuning with and find your idle afr, but its base fueling for the engine) an additional 5 units and started. basically the whole way I was pulling fuel though, but, using the tune I had for the stock heads and such was still pretty nifty, and it didn't take much change overall.

also somehow during this run I burned out a fog light. I looked on here and there were a few threads saying that harbor freight has fog lights of the same type, and sure enough they did. with a bit of soldering they fit right into the stock housings and even are the right color and intensity.

the next day I upped the boost a bit from an open waste gate to about 10 psi worth of DC. I did this not to try an go fast, but I find it helps me with tuning when im actually having the turbo start to do what its going to do in the final tune. I drove it like this for an additional 100 miles. After which I decided to do a few WOT runs and see how it did. I had no issue, it built boost fine, held it, and I had no KR, although i was running a bit rich at 10.8:1. I logged it and made some adjustments but it seemed to be taking it well.

I then tried my first boost launch, I noticed that my stall seemed to happen right around 3200, which sounds high, but felt great. It barked all 4 tires and launched hard, it felt like the whole truck jumped straight into the air. During that time I noted that I had achieved 2* of KR due to a poopy low fuel issue right off launch, I fixed it, tried it again and it went away. I then upped the boost to 15 psi and did a couple highway pulls. it was running rich at 10.6, but still felt alright. I headed to the local cruise in...

it was pretty empty, and I had the strip to myself (empty industrial road) I had 20 spectators that were shouting something along the lines of "that's a..that's a typhoon!" I sat at the line with an evo, but he just kinda rolled past me, which was exactly the thing i wanted to race. but, I decided to do a run and log it, and do some tuning at least. I managed 2 runs with 0 kr, and it felt like it was pulling hard. both times I tuned afterwords and both times I was pulling fuel. I decided to do a last run and this bike pulled up next to me. I decided it was worth a try and ran him, he got the jump on me, and I didn't get a real launch...he ended up winning by 2 lengths. Still felt good. after I left is when I got in a race on the freeway with a TBSS, and I was really surprised to walk an ls-1 powered anything on the freeway...at 110 I was still walking him...

I decided I need to check out my knock sensor, even though I know it worked before this last build, and I did actually see some knock during this extravaganza, it doesn't seem right, I see on C59 there's a knock sensor test that I think Ill try out. hopefully this week my batt relocation kit gets here and I can install that and my alky control kit.

I hope I can get that all in before this coming weekend and maybe get some tuning time in, I'd like to go to the track and get some real numbers.

So you're 2800 stalled at 3200? hahaha thought that wasn't possible....hahahaha
Good shit, keep it going.

Re: Rebuilding Ty #284

according to precision its not, and yank said the same thing. I suppose the only rational explination is that the space inside my bellhousing is a place where physics cease to exist as we understand them. in my logs it actually shows something even crazyor happening, when I let off the brakes the rpm's flash to 4100 and my fist speed logged after 0 is 17, followed by 25 and then 33. according to the ecm run time my 0-60 happens in something like 3.6 seconds...

Re: Rebuilding Ty #284

it sounds...wrong...theres no way its actually doing that. But, hopefully I can get it to the track and have an actual slip to know what its doing.

It sounds like yours is stalling and flashing just like mine. 0-60 in mid-high 3's? Thats not bad or unreasonable considering what your motor has in it. Was that in tunerpro or dm or both? If you have a smart phone with gps, you can download a app for 0-60 and such and compare and average all 3. Sounds real good though..

Re: Rebuilding Ty #284

I tried one of those GPS app deals on my buddys droid, and theres no way its accurate. According to it, I ran 0-60 in 3.41 seconds, with a 1/4 mile time of 11.8 @103 mph. It was a pretty flat road. Thats about where i want to actually end up though. Still needs find tuning, and the alky won;t be installed until next weekend. I have decided to go with a kinetic HS600 battery and a cone filter rather than relocating the battery. Hopefully it works out well. Also, thanks again ken for the use of your Bov, I will pay you as soon as you give me your paypal info.

Re: Rebuilding Ty #284

Well, I have or will have all of the parts to install the alky kit next weekend, and I'm looking forward to that. I also need to get the parts and such together to figure out where and how I am going to mount my tranny cooler. The only place I've found where it will fit is under the floor on the driver side next to the fuel filter, and its tight to the drive sharft, maybe 2 inches of clearance. Not sure how safe that is...if anyone in the area feels like heading up to maybe work on this or their own stuff, I'm up for it.

I got the beginings of the alky kit in today. I managed to mount the pump with a piece of plate steel that I had laying around, and bolted it to the inner fender.

Unfortunately, the light kinda played some tricks on my eyes, and the outlet side of the pump was running into a goody piece of steel, should have check more rather than assuming, but I managed to get around it in the end.

I have the K&N filter mounted, as well as the meth bottle and coolant overflow bottle, but did not take any pics, I will later and update. I had to modify the overflow bottle a bit, but I think it will work. All of the bolts involved with the alky pump and batt. mount install were welded in place so that it would be easyor to remove and service.

Re: Rebuilding Ty #284

alright, been awhile since I posted last, and unfortunetly all of the pics I had have been lost as I have had my phone stolen recently.

anyway, The kinetic battery I had ended up not working, and I went with a 325 CCA motorcycle battery that I bought from autozone for 80 bucks. I had to modify the tray a bit to fit, but it starts the truck with no prob. I got the tune down pretty well at about 15psi on just fuel, and after i felt good with the tune I installed the alky control kit I have. Installation wasn't to bad, and its hidden well enough to where you wouldn't think that anything is done to the truck. I ran water in it for a week or so just to check it out and make sure it was cool.

fast forward to about a week ago. I was driving to work when a school bus threw a huge rock at my windshield. I was pretty sad about that, it hit over on th passenger side and as I was looking at it I looked down at the floorboard and noticed a puddle of coolant collecting on the rubber floor mat I put in it to protect the carpet from mud....

so, today I replaced the heatercore and while I was in there I removed the pass wheelwell and adjusted my wastegate to make sure it could close fully, installed my turbo blanket, and wrapped my downpipe with some thermotech header wrap I picked up at autozone. these things made a world off difference for underhood temp. I also fixed a meth leak I discovered from the reserve bottle, the nipple coming off of it collapsed because the weld along the seal wasn't welded fully, so i cut off the unwelded part and put it back together (now leak free)

Tuning it tonight on meth I noticed an issue that I'm somewhat puzzled with. I have a very hard time building boost over 15 psi, when it shifts it will spike to about 19 and then sorta come down slowly to about 16. I have checked everything and am wondering if it is the bov I know little about that I have mounted on here, its an old hks, and it has a goofy bolt coming out of the back of it. I think its an ssqv, but am unsure.

I will say that its pretty fast. I logged a bit and it looks like that from 0-100 it takes my just under 11 seconds, and 0-60 is just under 4, these numbers are based from the engine run-time meter, so I have no idea whats it really doing until I go to the track (next week hopefully) I had a couple issue with KN that I haven't solved yet, and it might be false, but KN is kinda guilty until proven Innocent....but for no reason during one run it went from 0 to 8 to 6 to 10 to 12 to 18 to 15 to 10 and than I saw it and let off (maybe 3 seconds for that all to happen, was looking at the road, caught it at 10) 3400 rpm, 10.2 afr, 18psi, not sure what caused it, cannot recall speed at this time, but it looks like it was right after a shift.

I need to fix a goofy tick thats coming from the rear wheel, and install my tranny cooler STAT!

Re: Rebuilding Ty #284

Well, I had some issues with my bov, and ended up with an hks ssqv4. Nice valve, and sounds good. This solved my issues with blowing the hotside apart. The meth tuning seems to be going well, and I have it set to run about 15psi right now, just to get the hang of it.

The motor seems to be running strong, but i wont know how strong until I get it to the track, but it feels great.

I have started the tedious process of getting parts together for loweing my truck. I'm looking for a rear swaybar, lowering blocks (1 inch and a pinion correction of 4* (a guess)) rear lowering leaf I am ordering a set of the qa1 coilovers and am forced to use eibach springs. I believe that the front sway bar will be fine after the additional stiffness of the front end (we shall see). I am hoping that I can find alot of that stuff locally. The rest will be had on summit.

Re: Rebuilding Ty #284

Dissapointing day at the track, made 1 run,

I was on the line (my first time at the track) and I started to spool, but I had the pedal to the floor and it was only making 3 psi. I dropped the brake and punched at and it stayed at 3 and slowly worked it way up to 14.8 by half track. after half track it dipped to 9 psi and started to overcorrect to about 18. right as that happened I ran out of gear and bounced the rev limiter about 3 times until I just let off. Got back to the pits, coupler between the turbo and hotpipe was blown (had to have been from the start, on the street and can build 7 with no issues on the brakes), belt tensonor gave out and the belt had fallen off. looked at the file and it was at 99% WGD the whole time basically. the night before it was holding 15 with no issues @65% WGD, so it must have just given out (home depot couplers) hopefully I can get all of that fixed and be up to the goal off 22 psi with some more timing added (almost no knock retard during that run, and what I had I think came from the rev limiter getting hit, and me not having it tuned that far up on the rpm band 4.05* max though)

Re: Rebuilding Ty #284

Sorry again for no pics, I hope to have some here soon, as soon as I get my camera back.

My tensioner was definetly bad, there is a small pin that keeps the whole tensoner in place, and it has sheered off. I bought a new one and it seems that they have fixed the issue by making it a sttel stud rather than being part of the aluminum casting. I should have known something was up when I bought a new belt for it 2 months ago and it was 1.5 inches to long. I took it back thinking that they just gave me the wrong one, I had to go back today and reclame the correct one

I also got the trans temp gauge working and the new pan in place. having never seen the actual trans temp I have no idea if the new pan has helped, but either way it never got over 200, so its fine for now, the addition of my cooler should have a profound effect on temps...when it gets put on later this week.

I re routed my intercooler lines, I looked at it and noted that one of the lines was just above the fill cap, and that just wasn't going to work. After about 40 minutes they are now much lower, and also much less visible.
