Bite lip, hang head. Front dif expert needed.

Re: Bite lip, hang head. Front dif expert needed. I don't bother counting threads or marking the nut. That isn't a very accurate way of doing it when you are reusing the original yoke, buch less when you change the yoke. The original and new yoke are almost always going to be a different...

    C-Clip Eliminator Kit

Re: C-Clip Eliminator Kit It might be a little difficult running c clip eliminators with disc brakes. The disc brake brackets are designed to bolt onto the housing ends, the same place the c clip eliminators bolt on. They usually don't go together very well. These trucks are running 28 spline...

    Rear Diff Rebuild

Re: Rear Diff Rebuild I forgot that the ZR2 was wider. I knew that there was a bolt in 8.5, but couldn't remember which one.

    Rear Diff Rebuild

Re: Rear Diff Rebuild There are some bolt in 8.5 rear ends that were used in some of the 4X4 S series trucks. I think the ZR2 rear end will work. This has been covered several times on this sight. Do a search and you will come up with lots of informatin on it. Just be sure that you get one with...

    Rear Diff Rebuild

Re: Rear Diff Rebuild A rebuild kit for that rear end is about $100, plus $20 for axle bearings and seals. That is every bearing, seal, shim and small part needed to do the whole rear end. Labor shouldn't be more than about $250. $650 seems like a lot for that job. The Eaton posi would be a...

Play in the front diff after installing new yoke

Re: Play in the front diff after installing new yoke Looking at those pictures, it looks like the yoke was on right. The splines were far enough below the washer area of the yoke that I don't think it was bottoming out.

    Front dif removal

Re: Front dif removal Yea, some of the 4X4s had a steering stabilizer that bolted to the tabs that you mentioned. They also had a special drag link with another tapered hole in it for the other end of the stabilizer.

Play in the front diff after installing new yoke

Re: Play in the front diff after installing new yoke When you remove the nut and washer look into the yoke and see if the splines are below the surface where the washer sits. if the splines are even with the washer surface then the yoke might not be deep enough to contact the outer pinion...

    Front dif removal

Re: Front dif removal I've had a few of them out. I haven't had to raise the engine, but I haven't had one out of a SyTy. I have had them out of Bravada and 4X4 trucks. It is a pain. You have to turn it just right to get it out.

Play in the front diff after installing new yoke

Re: Play in the front diff after installing new yoke When setting up a ring & pinion gear you will use the torque that is required to turn the pinion. This is the bearing preload and is usually about 15 to 20 inch pounds on a smaler differential like the 7.2 IFS. When the differential is...

Play in the front diff after installing new yoke

Re: Play in the front diff after installing new yoke Torque the nut to about 125 foot pounds and use red Loctite on the threads. The method that you used is unreliable. You could have counted wrong or got something off a little.

Is my front DIFF going out

Re: Is my front DIFF going out Low oil seems to be the major reason for the front end going out on the S series trucks.

    front diff seal

Re: front diff seal The seal is the same on both sides. Remove the axle, pull the old seal out, clean the hole, use a little sealant around the hole and install the new seal. Use some oil on the lip of the seal before putting the axle back in. Be sure to check the axle for wear when you...

    did something stupid. help

Re: did something stupid. help I haven't checked the 7.2 IFS, but on the 12 bolt and 8.5 10 bolt I torque the nut to 150 foot pounds. I have tested it and it takes about 200 foot pounds of torque to change the bearing preload on these rear ends, but I don't know if it would be the same on the...

    Front diff?

Re: Front diff? Could be a pinion bearing. If it is leaking oil around the pinion seal then it probably is a pinion bearing. Check the oil level first. Removing the prop shaft will not allow the front diff to stop turning in a SyTy because of the solid right axle. If it was a 4X4 then that...

Pics of my front diff spool

Re: Pics of my front diff spool There is nothing else available for the 7.2 IFS except the Power Trax. You better put a dial indicator to the gear flange to see how much it is warped. All of that welding had to move the metal around some. Better replace those bearings too.

    front diff bolt MIA

Re: front diff bolt MIA Go to the salvage yard and get another one. All of the 4X4 S series trucks have the same front differential. It should be easy to find one. Take an 18mm socket, ratchet and wrench with you.

    Gears for Front Diff?

Re: Gears for Front Diff? My information says that it has been discontinued. I don't know if that is accurate or not, but you might find one in stock somewhere if you check around. I wish TracTech or Torsen would make a differential for these.
